High Latency but no lag... ( I think )

Hi everyone , i would like to know if my MTR is alright or if something is wrong. I live in Canada for your information if that can help. Usualy i got around 39 to 44 ms maximum. Now i have around 55 to 65 ms. I know its not alot but i want to make sure everything is fine hardware wise since i have no skill’s in Overwatch ! Few FPS and less latency can help me for sure lol ! Also i know for sure that sometime i hit someone and it doesnt register for some reason . Thanks alot for your help.

Are you playing on PC? If so, can you add a WinMTR instead? The looking glass tool tests the connection to the Overwatch login servers, which won’t help us much here.

There are a couple of spots in your ISP’s network where the ping is occasionally hitting the 60s and 80s, but the test is kinda short. If you wanna run another for 5 mins or so, it might make the issues more obvious.

This test shows slightly lower worst pings, but still around 55ms.

Those are Blizzard hops, which are configured to ignore some packets and traffic from WinMTR tests.

In your looking glass, it did seem like your ping was much higher, even to the login servers. That test only captures one moment, where the WinMTR is an average over time, but your ISP ping was at 67-77ms.

Just as an FYI, regardless of where you live, Blizzard has commented that they consider pings even in the late 80s to be acceptable. Optimizing your connection is probably something you’ll need to work with the ISP to see any improvement.

Whether it’s a worry is up to you. But your ping is still much better than most players.

On the line right now with my ISP because i have the same issue on WoW , my avg was 28ms and now its 50ms avg. So still something wrong. Propably my ISP i guess since my ping is lower than average on Overwatch. Weird enough 2 , on dslreports everything is A+ A+ A+ ( 100 mb/s ) connection. When i ping google i get avg 13-14 ms. Anyway big thanks for ur advice Nicole. Take care and keep up the good work.

A note on this: Ping tests use the server closest to you, to deliver the best ping. My local speedtest is about the same, but my ping to Overwatch is 56ms or 76ms, depending which North American server I land on.

Pingtest servers are designed for just that, receiving and responding to pings. They are not a good comparison for connecting to a game server.

Gotcha ,

Since its not blizzard server and not my ISP server or route or whatever it could be…

This computer is brand new , tried whitout my router directly to my modem as well. From your experience , what could make a 20 to 30 ms change suddenly ? I got no junk on my PC even more , i got script to debloat windows 10 2004.

As u can see my primary language is not english so sorry for all thoses weird stuff i can say lol.

Your tests are showing pings close to what you’re seeing in-game. The LAT stat in the game is a combination of RTT and Ping, which means your ms will be inflated by approximately 10ms (you can find a full explanation of how this works from the developers here).

Since your tests are showing around 55ms, and you’re seeing 65ms in game, the data matches and we’ve already determined the most likely cause: Your ISP’s route to the server may have changed. This happens often, and I don’t know of any ISP that is required to inform you of this change. If you called them up and they said “everything is working fine,” that is probably correct, because it’s working the way they have set it up. Unfortunately, it means a slightly higher ping for you.

Edit: Changes can be the result of maintenance to the network, congestion issues, or new routing contracts your ISP has negotiated. Only your ISP would know the reason, but that information may not be available to customers.

Your ping may randomly decrease in the future if they make changes, but without data to compare what your connection looked like before versus what it looks like now, it’s hard to tell exactly how they changed it.

If this is a major concern for you, you’ll need to work with the ISP. But from the perspective of support offered here, there is no further issue to troubleshoot.
