to be fair to that first one, we’re all pretty sure that was a trouble making troll post that just turned into a discussion forum.
You’ve made my point, thanks.
I wrote a comment earlier about representation being a terrible argument for why more LGBT characters should be introduced.
With the focus on characters and what they are, there is less focus on the idea behind what they are, and that is detrimental to the LGBT cause.
Everyone such as yourself is so caught up on “This character is gay” or “That character is bi” that you end up making that aspect of their character dominant. People are not known because they are gay, they are known for what they do and what they stand for. Their alignment is neither here nor there, but more testament to how you shouldn’t be held back by such trivial matters.
Discrimination exists in the real world, and you’re looking for an outlet to try and fight it. Representation in video games really is not the way to go. Someone mentioned The Last of Us recently. Look at the incredible focus on her sexuality, nobody is talking about her other character traits and how she has completely desensitized to the world around her. But she’s lesbian though, its super important.
What you are looking for is acceptance and this is the problem is todays society. It’s “forced acceptance” when it comes to fast change to conservative people. And as the acceptance person you are, you also have to accept the opinions of conservatives who don’t think the way you do. I believe this type of issue is something that dies with age/generations.
If you want to have respect for who you are, stand up for yourself and your values, and remember it’s getting better every day. If you came out as gay in the 80’s it was ever harder than it is today. But also accept resistant and other peoples opinions. For some people just watching a gay couple make out is that same thing as having a human and a dog making out. I’m not saying it’s a valid opinion, but it explains the feeling those people feel.
I believe in acceptance but I don’t believe in forcing it and Overwatch is and should be a game first hand, not a statement to LBTQ people. We still have a other love stories to look forward to. Where’s Torbjörns wife, aka Brigittes mom?
We should be happy that Tracer is gay, but I don’t think we have to force LBTQ movement into Overwatch. It’s a game, not a movement for “all acceptance”, don’t forget to have acceptance to people who don’t share their opinions with you.
EDIT: Also it’s funny that I was allowed to use the word “gay” but not: h ttps://imgur.com/Sn7rQI3
First off, those aren’t the OP’s posts… do you think the gays have some kind of… hive mind?
Secondly, the first two are just asking for more representation, such as revealing that an existing character may be gay, and I’m 95% sure the last one is a troll. What exactly is your point? People would like more LGBT representation? Yes, we’ve established that.
(20 characters and a half)
Gay male, 14. As someone who’s grown up after LGBT rights were fought for, I think it’s less import to have “representation” and rather to have stories that INVOLVE LBGT matters. The reason gay men were more isolated is because no one talked about it, it was taboo, but with the introduction of stories that ACTUALLY involve gay characters that are affected by it (Night In The Woods comes to mind) we HAVE discussion, better discussion then what we would get with a random gay character. I don’t mind this push to have representation, but if we push to hard it’s going to be tokenism, not a real, actual understanding of LGBT people and communities.
We got to know her before her Lesbian DLC was released though. And in the new trailer, we got to see her being a badass and destroying some people at their own game with their own weapons. We got to see her be awkward and cute and smack down some fools and be stealthy and smooch another girl. We don’t have much in the way of story right now to go off of, but she’s not one dimensional.
We got to see it, but I dare you to look up any discussion about her character
They are talking about it cos they are happy to have representation. Like… do you honestly think Ellie or Tracer being gay is harmful in some way to gay people??? These characters have distinct personalities, goals etc. that are all seperate from their sexuality. That’s good representation. Is the first thing you think of when you think of Tracer ‘gay’, or is it more likely stuff like ‘cheery attitude’, ‘spikey hair’, ‘time travel’, ‘gotta go fast’, ‘terrible taste in shoes’, ‘I hate it when she shoots me in the back’???
I don’t really like sexuality in games. The less there is, the better. I do not like people obsessed with this sort of identities. I don’t think it makes people better neither stronger. It’s just another religion.
Always glad seeing companies whose product I love not bowing down before handful of very loud people who are trying to support their silly demands and stupid complaints by some sob stories of their past.

I realize those aren’t OP’s posts. That’s the point.
And yes, they’re asking for representation not just as a detail. The second post’s OP even states they’re becoming impatient over a sexuality reveal.
I’m genuinely confused.
So far I know we have tracer who is specifically lesbian as stated by Michael chu.
I myself am bisexual, I asked you to specify because we don’t have a lot of representation in general so if a bisexual character was mentioned in game I would like to know who it is.
Lol, i know so many girls who arn’t gay but like kissing girls.
Havn’t K.Perry sung a song about that already?
Ellen Page is so disgusting.
Them being gay? Not harmful at all. I advocated Tracer earlier as an excellent example of how to create a characters personal relationships in a games lore such as Overwatch. Widowmaker is another great example. The writers have nailed all the current lore perfectly, and I’d like to see them continue.
Ellie is also an excellent character, but
I was more speaking of discussions and not articles. There is an unhealthy focus on her sexuality that people focus on
According to what studies? What is the size group? Location? Plus, as someone else has pointed out, not all LGBT people are out. I’m not outside of the internet. If I remember rightly this is what lead to the whole ‘red head’ debate since we have more red heads than we should ‘statistically’.
Oh, that’s fair. I don’t know. I saw the trailer, went ‘yes, nice good job’ and then got to see her stab a man in the throat with the same reaction lol.
Which is rendered moot when there’s more focus on the controversy of Ellie’s sexuality. When people ask for another gay hero, this is not the way to go in terms of representation.
… And? You still can’t make an entire hero that is nothing but hitscan any more than than you make an entire hero that is nothing but gay, so for the purpose of this argument, which trait you value more is irrelevant.
