Healers and Tanks not being fun is one of the most basic flaws of OW

On the other hand, as someone that have reduced reflex and can’t follow a high-speed meta, the current meta is a godsend, and that includes how tanking work. I like playing pretty much all tanks, but gimme a game where Reinhardt or Orisa can shine and you are placing me in tank heaven.

A meta built around Rein, Zarya and Brigitte is the most fun I had tanking since the time of triple tank Ana. And I hope the game stay in this meta as long as dive did.

You’re right, OP.

This is an issue other games figured out a while ago. The trick is to include diminishing returns on all functions that serve to prevent kills rather than to enable them. Take tf2’s medic for instance. That guy has healing which ramps up massively when the target isn’t in combat. He generates his “ultimate” much slower when he is healing someone being healed by another source.

The end result? The medic feels way more impactful than any healer in Overwatch despite him generally being weaker. He’s more fun to play, the skillcurve and benefits to knowing how to play him are far higher than Mercy’s (meaning people are more willing to main him in skilled gameplay), and fewer people are required to play him per team mate. That’s a big reason why tf2 lasted so long. Everyone is having fun in that game, and it’s never a question of “how many people on your team are willing to perform a chore”.

I love WoW because Tanking and Healing is such an enjoyable role. In my opinion, those roles are more fun than a DPS class. I always favored Druids and Paladins the most because I was able to fill any role should I decide to switch up my specs. They’re also the most engaging roles.

Right now in OW, although tanks and the healers are my favorite, they seem to be the hardest roles to play and are also the lease rewarding. When I say “hardest”, I’m not necessarily just meaning mechanical skill, but just overall playstyle. They’re the most stressful roles with no reward, other than a sense of accomplishment if you win. Feels like EA designed the tank and support roles in this game.

Tanking is definitely my worst desired role.
I have fought a rein+brig+McCree+Hog+2 healers comp, and almost all of my earthscatter were cancelled

I have fun to play Tanks and support. I somehow have not much fun with playing DD’s. Lack of aim and only play Quickmatch/Arcade. You can win there without dedicated DD’s easily. You can not win easily without Tanks/Healers.
I also prefer teamplay over solo-DD gameplay. With a Tank/support I can do something for the team which helps to win the game. A DD usualy only kills or get killed, especialy these wannabe solo carriers that storm in the enemy lines unaware where the healers are or the entire ally team. I so often have the most kills with Tank or Healer, instead of our DD’s. Then of course you know something went very wrong.
Nah, DD is also to much stress, I prefer tanking over killing. And surprisingly I still can deal damage while supporting my team, fascinating. ^^

Well everyone bought this game cuz they want to play fps game and most of the tanks and healers isn’t fps character so…

If you play main healer or main tank well you can carry the game and if you play them badly you can throw the game.

This is more of a game balance issue than a role specific issue. Tanks and healers are not fun-less roles, but they are less appealing for majority of players. Several different surveys I’ve seen indicate that about 50% of OW plays main (or want to main) DPS, with healers being about 30% and tank+flex rest.

However Overwatch is balanced around 2-2-2 comps. It was always been since release and devs typically break the meta when it drifts from that. Coupled with player preferences, it means that statistically in every team in every match there is a player who is either forced off their desired role or the team is handicapped with sub-optimal composition.

This is the main reason for toxicity in ranked. Empirically I can say that the most toxic players are the ones who are “forced” to flex, usually DPS mains on healers or tanks.

Since you cannot change the fact that most people prefer dps the only foreseeable work around I can imagine is role select.

As a tank/support player myself, I absolutely agree with the OP. There were times when people instalocked tanks and healers, but those days are over. I fondly remember the days of people fighting over Ana or Roadhog, but nowadays it’s just DPS. Blizzard can talk all day long about whether or not Roadhog and D.Va are theoretically balanced, but people don’t want to play them anymore. It’s just that people who flex will still pick what is needed, but I’m kinda tired of flexing all the time. I still love playing tanks and healers, but I question Blizzards balance philosophy. I think they need to keep track of who is instalocked, because that is who people really want to play.

That’s pretty subjective and they’ll come back anyway, don’t worry.

Season 5-6 Winston D.Va only tanks playable
Season 7-8 Orisa Hog
Season 9 Practically any tank was played cause they were all pretty bad in the meta
Season 10 Rien Zarya

And why is not fun?

I’m not blaming anyone here, but that’s something I’m very tired of listening. People keeps saying this as some sort of mantra. And is playing as a Hanzo, not shooting any arrow well, dying and doing nothing fun? Since when is not playing tank or healer fun?

Mercy and Lúcio need a great skill to actually heal and survive. Rein, D.VA and other tanks are hard to use and need skill to actually tank. Road with hooks and Zarya can destroy, Ana need even more skill to be efficient.

And you still have Briggite. Or Winston if you are as crazy as myself.

Why playing any of this heroe is boring?

Most support and tank heroes used to be fun, but Blizzard managed to create an unfun game experience, too many knockbacks and stuns, I don’t know who at Blizzard said “You know what’s fun? Not being in control of your actions in a FPS! It’s not like 1 second stunned can get you killed, pff”

The main problem with tanking is that it requires teamwork, otherwise you just get run over. A single tank is awful, you basically need at least two to get a good defensive line. DPS is the most casual because they’re self-sufficient and especially in solo, that’s a huge advantage to not have to worry about your team.

Not agree to that. You’re Soldier. Or reaper. you finally have your ult in a game where you died 17 times because there is no teamwork.

Then you flank succesfully, engage your ult… And you’re dead. Because everybody in their team has turned and deleted you. And what if the enemy team is not coordinated too? Well, then you can make much more damage and fun with roadhog, by deleting people with your hook. You can play with Briggite and kick their asses in a 1vs1.

Roadhoag is by far the most self-sufficent guy. He has enough life to survive almost anything, can stand a chance against Briggite in a 1vs1, can kill reaper and be a nightmare to any flanker or DPS. Can heal A LOT and delete anyone. It is better than Hanzo, that’s for sure (the character that is literally in every game). Hanzo is not self sufficient. He dies if someone is close enough. As a Winston I kill 12 hanzos per game. Soldier can heal himself… Every 15 seconds, and with 200 life, he gets killed by almost any character easy. Reaper? Against tanks he’s good, if the enemy tank is alone. One stun, one shot and you’re done, because you are facing a tank in close combat. Also, no active heals. Widow? No heal, no escape but the hook every 12 seconds, and you better aim it well. Pharah? Sure. As long as they don’t have anyone with a bit of skill in shooting in long range. And they always have. Junk? You spawn 2 grenades, and you are dead. In close spaces things are ok for you, as long as the enemy is not a tank. Mei? She’s good in a 1vs1, if the enemy is not a tank, or Briggite. And you die by any long shooting. Tracer? You better hope no one can shoot straight. You have 150 of health. One lost shot and you’re dead.

Without teamwork you’re f***ed anyway. DPS are not self-sufficient. Alone they are going to die. They have better movility, yes, but running for the scenario trying to escape for enemy team and finally dying when you finally get surrounded does not equal to fun.

Actually I would think that the most basic flaw is how uninteresting and unique damage/defense heros are. Tanks/support feel more fleshed out as a role imo.

It sounds like you’re saying dps are bad because they always 1v6

I agree each tank and support feels really fleshed out and feels like they play a vital role to the team. DPS its just who can wipe out the enemy team the quickest and get their ult.

I mean more people still enjoy it

It is time for Blizz to create new and more interesting tank characters. Tanks can potentially get just as much kills as DPS and they are absolutely essential in a team comp but yet people don’t like to pick them (including me I have to admit) because the current tank lineup is not as interesting those of other classes. As for healers, I see more people picking them now that Moira and Brigitte are out.
