when people say role x is overpowered what they are generally saying is that too many heroes of that role can do too much at once and dont need to be on the same skill level than most heroes in other roles. when people say support is the strongest role in the game they mean heroes like kiriko, mizuki, zen, ana, recently even juno, illari, in the past bap, wyang. heroes that are dpshealsupports. but can genuinely 1v1 dps without much issues due to them being able to use their kits for themselves. is the entire support role inherently overpowered? no but support designs lean way too heavy on being equipped to deal with anything without relying on others. the same can be said about tank but that role inherently needs to be able to do that. and dps are the weakest role. their kits do have more kill pressure than most supports. but they have no value for the team. almost anything a dps can do is to help them get kills. supports kits can help them get kills and even help their teammates at the same time.
thats the fundamental design flaw of support. a support who offers almost exclusively defensive or team value feels bad to play for most people and in 5v5. thats why most supports nowadays are one man armys as are tanks.
one can argue that supports need to be very powerful because the whole game falls apart without them (similiar to tanks). the problem here is that one role thats most replacable in a teamfight (dps) has just enough power to get kills if they play both smart and mechanically sound. a simple but hard job when everybody around you is gigabuffed to deal with anything.
DPS are the strongest role in the game. Counter-swapping is a mindset problem not necessarily a skill issue. Ranks are volatile and are not a determining factor in how well you can play the game. Widowmaker can be meta provided that she is properly nerfed. Community complaints are based on personal experiences and biased opinions.
One tricking a hero can provide the most useful ranked experience because the only constant in every game is you and the hero you choose to play. Some heroes can indeed be broken or overpowered due to recent buffs (Reinhardt). Mechanical aim is necessary to play the game.
Support is arguably the hardest role to play because it involves tracking both teams. Every hero deserves to be viable in different situations and that includes any particular meta. Balance complaints come from a place of perceived difficulty not necessarily blunders and confusion.
yeah right because they have barely any more kill pressure than a tank and support and their cooldowns and ults are also very very strong compared to the other roles /s
if shes nerfed she will not be meta as she is not meta now.
implying you dont need to track anything on other roles. im a support main and i can tell you that as a support i dont need to track any more or less than on all other roles. in fact, sometimes its even enough to just survive and heal, wheras other roles have to constantly be proactive. not saying supports dont need to do that at all, but for the most part they can and have to take safer positions which makes the role inherently less risky.
You can have the best tanks and supports possible on your team but if your DPS are Junkrat and Mei you aren’t going to be a very effective team. On the contrary, picking the right DPS can easily make up for any support and tank pick. Because DPS have the most value in the game.
That is like the least of my concerns when it comes to my team. In fact, there are probably more games in which I wish my dps would switch to Junkrat and Mei, than there are games I would prefer them to switch off those heroes.
Your experiences are probably entirely different from most other people. I don’t think there are very many people in the game who look forward to playing any map other than KoTH with Junkrat and Mei on their team.
Usually players who stay on Junkrat and Mei when a hitscan is needed are players who know they can’t aim. I would rather they stay on their spam heroes than try to outduel a widow main. There are other ways and roles who can counter a widow or a pharah for example besides always going hitscan dps.
It’s not always about playing hitscan, although it’s a good idea to have at least one hitscan player on every team. Maybe two depending on what the other team is playing. It is just more consistent damage. And if the other team is playing 2 hitscans into Junkrat and Mei you can forget about playing the game.
Then the tank is the CLEAR power imbalance not any singular support
And if you’re saying “the two supports together have more power than the two dps together or the singular tank”, that’s once again impossible to quantify
It’s all just a pointless mumbo jumbo mess to find an excuse to complain other players are doing stuff that impedes you in some way
Disagree. But everyone will always be biased based on their skillset.
Don’t entirely agree or disagree, some counters are a lot easier to play around than others.
Actually agree on these 2.
Idk about complain too much, but definitely get unjustifiably angry over it. It’s not that deep. XD
100%.
Actually agree, but I think how fun something is to play against is often blurred with how strong something is to play against.
Disagree entirely, a god tier aim on widow can carry you way further than god tier positioning on support like mercy. Positioning and cd management more often keeps you alive, but mechanical aim is what kills the enemy and takes the objective.
I can’t really comment too heavily, I feel like tank is definitely the most counter intuitive to learn, I’ll say that at least.
HP increases (especially in the tank role) naturally exacerbated some counter-matchups, due to the narrowing of punishment windows. This is almost exclusively a tank vs. tank matchup problem.
This is very nuanced, and calling it a pure skill issue is shortsighted.
True.
There is still some abuse of calibration modifiers with alt accounts, and smurfing is a separate issue, and is an exception, not a rule.
Agreed.
She has generally always been pretty map-dependent, though. Her becoming meta would be a result of her becoming too versatile. Highly unlikely it would happen.
Just going to focus on onetricking here, since this is kind of a broad, meaningless statement.
Onetricking is an effective way to play the game and climb, though perhaps not the most effective.
Playing too many heroes is much worse than playing a single one.
The most effective way to improve (in my experience) is to specialize in one hero, and to back it up with another two, in case of bans or difficult comps.
This depends how you define “broken”.
I only ever use this term in context of design, and never balance.
As you have a dislike of Widow, I’d think you’d agree that “broken” heroes exist under this more precise usage.
Too broad. You need both to thrive at hyper competitive ranks.
