Has FOMO gone too far?

I mean, that’s kind of what the companies that are using these FOMO marketing strategies want.

They want you to be dedicating all your time to their games, so you don’t have any time to be playing their competitors titles.

I usually don’t ever find myself playing more than one of these FOMO games at a time so I don’t really have any issues with this but if you’re someone who likes to bounce around from FOMO game to FOMO game, then yeah, I can see how that could be a bit taxing.

I would just recommend picking one as your main game and then treating the others as just something to hop on when you’re bored; that’s what I do anyway.

There’s a rush I feel playing OW2 I don’t get with single player games. That being said, FOMO is quite ridiculous to the point you’re expected to play daily, excluding all other games.

I like OW, but I hate grinding, and OW can easily be a grind.

Fomo is dumb for sure, but can choose not to engage with it. Call them out on it and try to sway community opinion, but you can also just play the game too.

Don’t worry about getting all the things, just get what you like.

Nope, I do not get anything out of FOMO. I bought the original game back in the day. I won’t waste money of cosmetic items. If I don’t get something it’s not a big deal. I’ve actually gone back to OW 1 default skins when I can.

Everything about modern gaming is about building unhealthy gaming habits to extract as much money as possible from us. The real problem is that these unhealthy designs have become so strong and so prevalent that player often beg for these features if they are not included, and if Overwatch stopped using these dark design patterns a lot of players would just get ensnared by another game that does.

It is hard to break away from the FOMO, and I do have a personality type that makes these tactics hard to resist. What helped break away from the feeling of it being a second job was to intentionally miss out on a season, and not buy the battle pass. The more passes I missed, the easier it became to ignore my daily missions and go back to playing the game for the sake of playing instead of playing for the chores. I do still sometimes get caught up in the chore aspects, but it has gotten easier to break away.

I don’t really care about it. Is it a morally questionable marketing strategy? Yes, but what isn’t? Everything is basically a skinner box made for humans. The audio and visual queues when you get an elim, die, level up your battlepass etc is there to keep you engaged. Just like the flashy effects on the old loot boxes. That trick is centuries old by now and it works on everyone, from toddlers playing with their pad to boomers on slot machines.

FOMO is just another tool they can use manipulate you and everyone uses it. And why wouldn’t they? Don’t forget that US corporations are required by law to maximize profit for their shareholders.

without fomo the game have nothing to offer, gameplay si boring, balance is bad, there are no engaging modes, story, pve, i stopped caring for skins long ago and realized how empty the game really is, i only come back to play when there is a “”““big””“” update just to realize some matches later why i stopped playing, what is going on right now in the game? just classic with doom dps and 2cp coming back

Overwatch in particular is bad about this. The pass takes too long and its even a first person game making skins less valuable.

In Fornite it only takes like 25 hours or so to get all of the base skins from a BP and seasons last a while. Bonus skins do take a while but they are just recolors and meant to be the long grind for people who want to play a lot

Modern games tend to give out daily, weely quests to keep you engaged. I don’t feel anything wrong in OW2. But ever since I touched Brawstars and MR I do hope there is a way to “store” my dailies to a degree of amount (e.g. 10 missions max etc) so in case I can’t login to the game today I can finish them tomorrow.

And for paid items, I have to say OW is doing the most unintellegent way I have ever seen in most GaaS business. They should have allow us to purchase any existing OW1 skins and allow us to buy them anytime we want to. They really do not need to fill the whole screen with several layers and tabs design vise at this state. The whole structure feel sooooooo… I don’t know how to say… newbie? to me and I don’t think thats the correct way to do FOMO, like AT ALL!

I really hope they get down from their ego and reconsider this whole thing. Really feel unprofessional. Just my IMO tho!

All FOMO is bad, so yes.

FOMO has jumped the shark last year. The Live Service bubble broke and there is a standard free games have to meet to keep players engaged.

In a tightening world economy, FOMO ain’t gonna make the money it used to. Most people can miss out on cosmetics when there are other games that will give you free stuff or doesn’t let it go away forever.

If FOMO was strong then OW would be able to keep a hold on its whaling customers.

No, but it definitely keeps me from exploring all the other multiplayer games out there

The FOMO sucks. It’s anti consumer. But it would be bearable if they didn’t completely replace ow1s reward systems with FOMO. I don’t think any fomo should exist though.

Ow2 is so unrewarding to play imo. Why play? Just for pvp gameplay? Thats not enough for me to keep me playing consistently. I want to earn skins and voicelines by levelling up hero progression. Give away a different skin for reaching a certain comp sr. Bring back some non fomo rewards.

My brain needs some rewards to enjoy a game. But fomo feels bad it makes me want to disengage.

Even if fomo doesn’t bother you (players in general), it should bother you that it’s anti consumer. Too many players are happy to let anti consumer crud happen because “fomo doesn’t bother me”. Fight for the principle, not because it does or doesn’t bother you.

You should know full well if players don’t protest this bs, it becomes the new norm so the companies will stress test the next anticonsumer systems in the future. Rinse and repeat. Its a boiling frog situation going on.

This too. I’m much less likely to even think about picking up a new game because of it.

Not really both games even free to play doesn’t bring me back or drive to play them either.

I used to feel the pressure to play but after a few frustrating seasons i really realized how much i use those skins compared to the ones i got in ow1. Rarely. And in the case of souvenirs, sprays and voicelines, never.

Then i just stopped caring. If the gameplay wasn’t fun, I just stopped playing.

Daily tasks exist entirely to farm engagement and make one feel like they ‘must’ login in order to complete them. This type of thing was never implemented to help any type of player.

I hear you, but it’s so much easier when you just recognize that you aren’t meant to have everything in the game. I play OW half as much as I did two months ago, and I still completed my S14 battle pass with weeks to spare. Go for the events/ cosmetics for heroes you like. Otherwise, disregard it

I would highly reccomned…

PLAYING SMALLER STUDIO GAMES.

Be it AA, Indie, or whatever game is free on any platform you have access to.

Currently I’m going back through the DS library, and Enjoying a murder mystery puzzle game 999.

You will find a lot to enjoy that isn’t mass marketed.

Not really for me, I only play MMOs or any online when friends are active.
Since we now have to pay bills, that’s not too frequent.
