Half my team wanted to force a draw because we felt bad the game wasn't cancelled when an opponent left, while the other half didn't. This also included some of the worst toxicity ever seen on the winning side. What should have happened?

Ok, I have read all of these replies and have come to a pretty satisfying conclusion. Drawing in these cases only happens at the highest ranks of Overwatch. Because that is not me, I cannot change the system and must play to win. Next time this happens, if it happens, (hopefully not because Blizzard should be fixing their bugs) I will keep playing to win. It turns out that what I did was attempt to throw the game. That wasn’t very cash money of me so I must apologize. It won’t happen again.

Some of you understood why that player was toxic, but it is never ok to be toxic to anyone ever. What that player should have done was be like, “hey man, I disagree. I think we gotta win this game, not draw it. It doesn’t matter that a bug ruined the experience for the other team. Otherwise you would be griefing and that could get you reported.” I would have gladly withdrawn my argument and taken their side much more quickly and I would never have had any issue. We would be so much more advanced as a species if we were able to handle disagreements like these with civility.

No harm done though as I did win the game in the end. I feel like I should make that clear. I gave in to the pressure to win. I definitely learned quite a bit through this discussion and it has helped a lot. Interesting to see how there are still people with opposite opinions in this thread alone.

Your teammates maybe lost a game due to a leaver last game and now you’re trying to take that compensation away from them. How would they feel? Sure, you’re being nice to the enemy but how about to your own team?

Ps Personally I wouldn’t mind that at all considering all my team agreed to it but I ain’t gonna try to be a white knight if my team doesn’t want it.

And you wouldn’t believe how many boosted players live leeching on this small SR gains. The moment you take it away they become toxic. Cause they have no skill to get a win themselves if the odds are even…
Pathetic…

The game should full stop and end when there is a leaver on either side no one wins or loses. Is that an annoying waste of time? Yes, yes it is. Its the only fair thing to do.

You are right i agree, he didnt have to be toxic if you really didnt insist on drawing. Just be aware of fact that people can be frustrated from previous games, they have losing streak and then when finaly can win game, soneone will suggest to draw. Not everyobe has so strong mind to deal with stress well

I thought something else though. How wrong you sound and why people got mad at you lies in the semantics of a word in the very title of this post: to force. No one wants to deal with a forced outcome, especially in this game when you have already a fairly limited amount of agency on the result of the match due to the teamwork based nature of this game.
You force the outcome and put this rather disappointing thing in their face after they maybe waited 10 minutes sitting in front of the screen to get a match loaded, maybe after they got stomped themselves, maybe with a leaver, and you get the perfect recipe for a toxic interaction between perfect strangers.
This “forcing outcomes regardless of personal effort” can be easily, for historical and cultural reasons, especially on NA servers, associated with communist ideology, while some right wing people with no sympathy for left politics will intentionally scream “commie” to double down on the connotation of their foe, cause they think of something left wing as their unwanted counterpart, a threat that can somehow harm them and is therefore responsible for every minor and major problem they might perceive inside and outside of themselves. This apparently rather annoying and selfish individual that is dictating a result based on some supposed moral high ground happens to be my teammate for 20 minutes, and since I can’t avoid him the only way I can get some revenge would be to offend him, even in the most simple minded and cringe-enducing ways. It’s important to highlight that your “forcibly enforced” outcome so to speak is based on a fairness and a theoretical equalization of outcome that are not implied in the core mechanics of the game. Therefore not only you as a player are unhelpful but actually detrimental to someone’s else effort to reach personal or in-game set goals, because by taking away a possible win they could get within the regulations of the game you deprive them of something and you inevitably frustrate them exponentially fast. You are hence perceived as a threat and the verbal reaction from the person you are trying to communicate with will be violent and blunt.

So everyone is right, everyone is wrong if you just swap perspectives.
At the end of the day I would say, oversimplifying quite a bit, that is not your job to fix what the game has failed to fix, even in the case of a technical issue. Of course is not a big deal if this happens once, even if your team draws it’s not a big deal, but it’s up to developers to decide the rules within we play and thus enforcing mechanics that achieve a fair adjustment to the outcome of that match for all the parts involved.

Play to win, or go home. They had 2 leavers. Sucks to be them. Now finish them off as quickly as possible, so you and they can both find new teammates/matches. Dragging it out for a draw is trolling, soft-throwing, and technically cheating.

JUST. PLAY. THE GAME.

I’ve had high ranked smurfs in my match, on a KOTH, wipe us every time we approached the CP, but without stepping on it themselves. So they drew out a 3-round match for nearly 90 minutes, just so that could make the rest of us quit and take the leaver penalty.

You were just doing the same thing even if you don’t realize it.

When the enemy team has leavers, you don’t back off. You tilt. End the match as fast as possible so everyone can get on with their lives.

Holy crap, this reply actually makes a tremendous amount of sense. I didn’t even consider how I could have come off as “commie” by what I was indubitably forcing on my toxic teammate, but everything you just said made it fall into place perfectly. It perfectly explains more than anything why he wanted to associate me as a Bernie supporter.

It’s amazing how people be like that sometimes. I’m definitely gonna pick my next actions very carefully from now on, especially on the NA servers.

Excellent insight m8 I love seeing intellectual perspectives pop off where you least expect it.
