I understand lootboxes are inherently preditory, but what we have now is extremely reliant on fomo and gives you no way to gain the skins unless you pay. (Unless you want to grind for a year.)
Skin shards are usually how you can combat this, but with how many coins per challenge, that idea won’t go anywhere.
Why not just have a giant lootbox but you get “spins” every BP level so it becomes a gacha game? Oh wait…
Because let’s say you’re conditioned by free loot boxes to the point where you consider it to be normal, then you go and play a game that has ones available for a price. You’re going to be far more likely to spend money, because you want that dopamine rush that comes from opening a box. And you can get that dopamine rush for only $5 a pop! So of course you’re more inclined to spend, and that’s what you do.
Loot boxes are designed to make you want to open them again and again. They give you the first taste for free, then they suck you in, and even if Overwatch were to remove the ability to buy loot boxes, that wouldn’t change the fact that the boxes themselves are designed to manipulate you and will continue to do so, it just won’t be Overwatch that you end up spending money on.
There are far better systems than loot boxes available for monetization. Better to have any of those, even the worse ones, over loot boxes.
You do not think? Or in other words, it could definitely be fear. The fact that you did not outright confirm it was not fear de facto proves that not only are you fearful of criticizing people who pay for skins, but you are afraid of me as well.
Do not worry, Sushi. You have nothing to fear even if you have some strange hobbies. I will never hold it against you.
