Getting pretty irritated now

Blizzard is having A lot of issues with high latency on some of their servers, 1k+ ping spikes server side, Disconnects from the server, Server side.

So why am I being punished for this, Why am I losing SR for something that is happening on their end?

I could understand if I was some broke person who coulnd’t afford proper internet but I run fiber, and I’ve paid for everything I own. I want to enjoy this game but when I spend hours getting 100 SR over the course of 5 games or so, to then be punished because of a server side malfunction, it’s starting to get on my nerves.

Unfortunately all disconnections and game crashes counts as leaving the match and will be penalized appropriately. The game server has no way to discern a legitimate disconnection or game crash from one that is forcefully caused by a dishonest player to bypass leaver penalties. You can learn about this policy here:

Remember if you see the message, “Lost Connection to the Server” in the title screen or the message “Failed to Connect to Server” in red text in the text chat box, this means there is something that disrupted your connection to the game server and not a problem with the game server itself. There can be a variety of reasons this happens including those that don’t disconnect your computer from the Internet. There is great troubleshooting to start with that can most likely resolve most issues and I encourage you to check them out here:

Of course, if your internet is working with other services, then you must troubleshoot your specific connection to the game server. Do this by running a WinMTR test.

  1. Download WinMTR from http://winmtr.net/download-winmtr/ (Console players need a Windows Desktop Computer connected to the same network as their console to do this.)
  2. Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
  3. Open the WinMTR folder and select the 32 or 64 bit version. Choose whichever one corresponds to your version of Windows.
  4. Run the WinMTR.exe
  5. Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
    Network Graph
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like 12.34.56.78:12345. You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the 12.34.56.78
  6. Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
  7. Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
  8. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~

If in the event you can’t even connect to Overwatch and get into any game mode at all, please use one of the following IP addresses based on your geographical region:

  • US West - 24.105.30.129
  • US Central - 24.105.62.129
  • Brazil - 54.207.107.12
  • Europe - 185.60.114.159
  • Europe - 185.60.112.157
  • Korea - 211.234.110.1
  • Taiwan - 203.66.81.98

I’m in-game but the IP address for control+shift+N does not match any listed above, is that a problem?

No it is not, that list is a fallback list in case you can’t even connect. Use the in-game IP address.

So I just run this winMTR thing all the time until it starts spiking or dc me, then wait 6 minutes and hit stop?

Yes, this will help capture an accurate test result.

are lines 9 through 30 supposed to say “no response from host”?

Yes that is normal, post the results here and I can tell you if there is a problem or not.

It’s not acting up at the moment so I don’t think it will show anything but I also am wondering why I’m not directly connected to the Blizzard server, it seems to be routing me through other places first, is that normal?

Okay, just to confirm did you disconnect or have high spikes of latency when this test ran?

No issues during this test, I was curious as to why it’s routing me through different places instead of directly to Blizzard

Sorry didn’t see the edited reply, yeah this is normal and a very healthy test result. Keep this test result handy. Now if you are not disconnecting frequently right now, I would suggest carefully going back and playing non-Competitive game modes. If you disconnect, do a new WinMTR. Your original post from 15 hours ago may be from issues that have been resolved by the ISP (which is a good thing if that is the case).

When the problem occurs, I get extremely high latency, and start rubber banding, and sometimes it will freeze and then come back and warn me about inactivity, but the entire time I can hear accurate voice comms, just no player models are moving. As if I’m only partially desynced, I’m saying its not on my end because it only happens with Overwatch, not any of the other online multiplayer fps games nor anything else. and Only since the 15th of may.

For instance during the desync times, I can alt tab and go to google and check the forums.

Yeah so if and when it happens again, jump straight to doing a new WinMTR. That’s the trick, now I will say Blizzard does review this forum and if they recongize your general connection is related to issues with other players in your area, your test result does help them communicate to network providers to fix these problems that occur between you and the game server.

Right now, I would say this is about as much as we can do now until new issues start acting up. Again, play several non-Competitive games, and if you feel confident in the connect return to Comp. Otherwise post again if the issue acts up again.

Can I just leave it running all day and then stop it 6 minutes after the problem occurs?

I would not recommend it, the test does shut off on its own after so long and the idea to run the test only when problems are occurring for accurate results.

It did a super minor one, can you tell anything from it?

The third hub which might the first one that your ISP (Comcast) controls has a brief data loss (only 1% though). This might be where the issues are occuring, if you get anything more concrete see if the problem repeats on that third hub.
