"Garbage tier" hero's according to a GM player's perspective

Youtube: EDUCATIONAL Unranked to GM DPS | THE GUIDE | Overwatch 2

According to this ~2 month old video, when taking masters+ rank into consideration the following hero’s are irrelevant:

“WTF are you doing on this hero”:

  • Junkrat
  • Mercy
  • Roadhog
  • Soldier 76
  • Zarya
  • Lifeweaver

What do you think about this take? How much might have changed in the past two months? Are these heros still irrelevant in your eyes when considering Master+ rank? Is this take flawed?

Junkrat is decent with his one shot breakpoint back on more 225 health heroes

I’m still baffled by people thinking he’s unplayable because he leaves some targets on 5 health like you’re always going to target full health heroes anyway. If you’re flanking and hiding to one shot squishies you chuck in a melee ez clap

He’s still the best armor buster in the entire game. Solid B tier hero

He’s ok but there’s a reason absolutely nobody but the masochists with thousands of hours on him play the hero in top ranks. You can make him work but why bother when he has such harsh counters with most maps being mediocre at best for him? You can get so much more done with less risk and more consistency. Which is why:

Is a normal reaction to picking him outside of like 3 maps with a lot of maps being to the level of unplayable. You want a Junk on Havana against double sniper Sigma? You want a Junk against Pharah Mercy Dva on any map?

You yourself have even said you understand some of the struggle he faces:

Playing him always comes with the knowledge that you’ll likely have 1 or more hard counters by the 2nd teamfight and they are among some of the harshest counters for any hero in the game.

Consistency is everything. Would you be ok if 2 headshots from Ashe or Mccree left targets on 5hp since your team can just follow up? No? That’s why.

He’s pretty good at this but it’s a pretty niche strength. It definitely surprises a lot of overconfident tanks though.

…you can just look at overbuff and see the most picked heroes in masters+. You don’t need someone’s “take” on it.

Zary exists because of dva , no really any other reason.

I dunno, I just don’t feel like S76 and Zarya fit on there. I imagine that their woes stem from what’s currently being played in M+, and not anything that’s fundamentally wrong at a base level. Same for both of them at metal, really, but for different reasons.

I mean, Junk’s a little better than he was ~2 months ago.
Zarya and 76… Feel like they’re more victims of what was/is being played and to some degree, at least for Soldier, the midseason armor rework.
Hog is gonna be bad if Ana’s viable. M+ means Ana’s basically always viable.
Mercy and Weaver to some degree are both better, but if they’re better enough to not be kinda a wasted slot at those levels is unknown to me.
Weaver’s a little more fluid and can apply pressure without guttering his healing tempo, and Mercy’s got a bit more heft to her healing and DB.
I could see the Weaver changes at least being a stepping stone to making him more generally viable, Mercy’s higher HPS feels a bit better but I honestly don’t see it making her a better pick for higher ELO than her competitors unless a DPS is nerfed/buffed to OHK territory if they have a 30% damage amp.

Is that the video from Trqstme? If so I watched that video. He is not wrong, especially with Mercy and LW, but maybe not so much for Junk, especially now. I think that video was made before Junk buffs and indirect buffs when nerfing some mobility heroes. Junk is way more viable now.

Soldier76 is outclassed by Ashe and Cassidy and Zarya in high ranks is only ever good in the hands of the Zarya specialists that have over million hours on her like A10 and from what I saw Cyx is the only one making Hog work in every match up and even he is struggling against Dva a lot.

In high ranks Zarya into Dva is extremely map dependent. On maps like Numbani, Gibraltar or Dorado, high ground maps Zarya does nothing to Dva. Plus with the Dva being the it tank now she is way more viable against Zarya in general. In order for Zarya to work against Dva, Dva needs to play in Zarya’s effective range which with her low cooldown on boosters is not that hard to avoid.

In terms of “right now”:

Junkrat is fine.

Mercy if the DPS is good enough and the enemy team doesn’t know what dive is, is fine.

Roadhog if they aren’t playing ana or any of the hook counter tank heroes is fine (and still pretty much unkillable)

Soldier is meh. He’s dookie cause dva exists.

Zarya isn’t bad at all??

Lifeweaver is better now but please for the love of god stop playing lifeweaver.

I don’t think it’s healthy to approach life that way, you’re basically telling me your opinion doesn’t matter.

No. She still sees success because hitscans are busted. There are better picks, but until hitscans are balanced Mercy isn’t ever gonna be bad.

No lol

Bigger no lol

Junkrat is pretty good, but the rest of the list is correct.
There is NEVER a reason to pick S76 when much better heroes that reward accuracy and resist dive exist. True representative of D tier. Of course in low skill games nobody knows how easy it is to kill S76, so he can be played there.

Mercy
Roadhog
Zarya
Lifeweaver

Simply suboptimal picks. Immobile tanks that can only walk are not en vogue.

As there are multiple junkrats in top 500 lmao

It does happen a lot with the new Hog hook falloff range I just accept it. Like the other day I double dinked a Tracer (175hp) across Ilios well and the gimped falloff saved her

Now this is not as common as a Junkrat combo leaving others at 5hp, but the difference here is the spikiness of that damage. Junk when he has that breakpoint becomes a total meme, hide behind a wall and delete someone before they can react hero

Ashe can still miss, Cass can miss or straight up be hindered by the damage falloff at a normal engagement range. I honestly don’t have a problem with them returning that extra 5 damage since everyone’s healthpools were buffed, but It’d need to be pinpoint and with 0 room for error. Only on direct hits and maybe with reduced projectile sizes overall. Like half a metre off and it doesn’t one shot anymore. Before he could “overkill” squishies by hitting an AoE combo. That was so cheesy

They’re not going to walk back on season 9 at this point so

You’re kind of sidestepping the point and could have just said no you wouldn’t be ok with it because it would feel horrendous regardless of how much they buffed the rest of their kits to compensate.

Isn’t that just the natural consequence of competitive play that’s never going away? Being a balanced hero and fitting in the meta of the highest ranks of play aren’t the same thing.

(especially in a game that people love to say is “all about” counter-picking.)

It depends. Heroes can rise and fall in viability with no changes to their own balance purely due to the meta shifting. However, if a hero is never part of that meta it’s difficult to say they’re ever strong even if there are a handful of players making them work. That makes the hero viable if the player is good enough and that isn’t the same as strong.

As I said Junk is ok right now partially because fliers got nuked out of existence along with his combo being somewhat restored. But he’s only ok and is still far weaker than he used to be when everyone accepted he was mediocre at best.

Junk is a pretty solid pick for more maps than the usual couple of niche situations right now. Sometimes he is still a very bad pick, just less often.

FTR I don’t think Mercy is a garbage tier pick right now, it’s just that she doesn’t always pair well with the other meta supports.

tier list don’t really matter, every hero is viable.

It’s back to where it was pre season 9 just with a heavily nerfed flank playstyle and tire being weaker. He’s viable but nowhere near as strong as he used to be and if we wind back the clock back to earlier seasons nobody thought he was good, just ok. Viable but not worth playing outside of Lijiang control, Kings row etc unless you’re weird and have 2k hours on him.
