Fun fact - Boop is not a word

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=boop

The only good one of course.

Affectionately poking someone on the nose, often accompanied by saying "Boop!"

Nora casually booped Ren on the nose when they met up.

Oh look- another user submitted definition.

These sources are as “official” as urban dictionary

Boop isnt an “actual” word. It’s a colloquial word that plenty of people may understand the use, alot of words are- but when talking about what is or isn’t an “actual” word, that’s a very different concept.

Do you think there are dictionary police or something that regulate websters? lol.

No one uses “official” dictionaries anymore.

Not in 2024.

When talking about what ”official” words are - they do.

Well live in your little fantasy world, I won’t stop you, lol.

Um, okay?

Calling the word “boop” not a word, is one of the silliest things I’ve ever heard, lol.

I imagine you pushing up your glasses like, “Mahoy! Look it’s not in webster-meriams dictionary, therefore it is not a word! Gleekin! (simpsons nerd voice)”

Learn to think for yourself.

You cope with being wrong in an amusing way. But you do you.

You have an interesting way of just saying “you’re wrong,” without providing any rebuttal as to why. Kind of like “nah uh,” lol. But you do you.

only around here could there be such a heated argument over foolishness like this.

Words take time to officially become recognised. Language is ever evolving, it’s not rigid. Boop is a word, because millions of people use it and recognise its meaning.

Dude. ‘Lol’ is in the freaking Oxford dictionary. The pinnacle of dictionaries. Would you consider ‘lol’ to be more of a word than boop? Pffffffffffffffffft.

Language is ever evolving and changing. To not recognise a word is a word just because it’s not in the ‘prestigious authority of words’ yet make you a sheep to authority.

Language will evolve and live on for as long as people do. As old as it is, your prestigious Oxford is finite.

I assure you, it is an actual word. Not all actual words are put into oxford though.

Totally - It is like saying email didn’t exist before oxford put it definition in the dictionary.

I mean, I was using it, and FTP etc, well before oxford decided it was to go into the dictionary.

It seems crazy to point at a thing and say “This can’t be a thing, because the dictionary hasn’t defined it”, while huge numbers of people are using it.

Next someone is going to say Dogs don’t have noses, because snoot doesn’t exist either.

What are you booping, if not a snoot?

Hi, English teacher here! I know this subject better than you, and well…you’re wrong. Just stop, dude. Words don’t have to be acknowledged by an “official” dictionary to be words, and it’s honestly kinda embarrassing that this is the hill you want to die on.

…They do for the purposes of some formal writing and Scrabble, the latter of which is what the thread is about. I don’t think Sideways means that it isn’t a word in the sense of it being gibberish. At least, I hope they don’t.

It isn’t yet, but looks like it’s being evaluated for inclusion in at least one. It will be eventually. I’m actually a little surprised it hasn’t made it yet.
