Frame lag/frame drops for first 5~ minutes of running game

Hi there,

I’ve been having an on/off issue with Overwatch constantly dropping frames after opening for the first 5-6 minutes. As with other people here the game ends up becoming smooth after that period but it is essentially unplayable until then. The game is installed on an SSD (Samsung 860 Evo) which is less than half full rn and no other game has these issues. The problems first started appearing on an older Nvidia driver (cant remember which specific one), but then disappeared when I updated to 460.79. A couple of days ago I updated to 460.89 and it came back again.

My PC uses an AMD Ryzen 7 3800x, an RTX 2080 Super and 32GB RAM. The game is installed on a separate SSD to the main system drive, which like I say is only half full.

Disk use peaks at like 15-20% when the game is first loading, then bearly registers a blip any other time, so it isnt my disk being slow. GPU usage drops drastically too at times that the lag happens - from roughly 50% or so (Ultra, 1080p, 60FPS locked) to like 10-13, and back up again.

Not really having issues in any other games I play, at least none that I can notice anyway. Need to re-install Windows anyway tbh so if this is the only fix thats fine because I’m going to do that soon. However if theres anything else I can do in the meantime please let me know.

So far I have tried to repair overwatch using BattleNet but this hasnt fixed anything, and neither has uninstalling the apps listed in the DXDIAG report I generated.

I have uninstalled Skype and Office Hub (which are highlighted in the DXDIAG report) but the problem still persists.

Edit: forgot to mention, restarting the PC doesnt fix it, and thermals are prefectly fine according to Speccy. I use this PC for VR, which is much harder on it than Overwatch is, so if it was gonna thermal throttle I dont think Overwatch would be the place I’d notice it. Should also mention I dont have any razer software on here or anything like that, so it isnt anything to do with that sort of thing.

Edit 2: Nothing out of the ordinary in the system Event Log either.

DXDIAG report error section below (wont let me post whole thing):

These standard tips can help resolve most Overwatch FPS drops:

  • Reset Overwatch’s Video Settings (This step may not be done even if you tried a Scan and Repair or uninstalled and reinstalled the game.)
  • Update your graphic card driver.
  • Reset your graphic card driver settings., then make sure that your Graphic Card Driver control panel is configured correctly for Overwatch. This includes setting Overwatch at Maximum Performance (not optimal power) for Power Management and making sure it set to run on the graphics card and not the motherboard chipset.
  • In drastic cases you may need to reinstall the driver and update to the most recent driver for your card. Remember to use Display Driver Uninstaller to completely clean out your old driver. Then download the most recent NVidia or AMD driver for your system.

Also here are advanced tips I have written in Overwatch’s Tech Support forum that maximize your FPS performance in the game.

Having Overwatch installed on a different drive from that of the operating system can sometimes cause issues for certain users. You may need to consider installing the game on the same drive as the operating system to see if the problem continues.
