Ana was the creator of like 6 metas.
Last season Juno and Brig’s synergy dominated the meta.
It ain’t the tank or the role.
The common denominator is the balance decision making by the devs that is the problem with the game.
They once giga buffed Junkrat for the spam meta.
That had zero to do with tanks and a 100% to do with over buffing a hero.
They have power creeped every hero on this roster at some point with the exception of Symmetra
No it was caused by the strength of AOE healing, specifically brig, every goats variation had the tanks swapping around, even changing to certain DPS (Mei) but brig was a constant.
Again that was caused by supports with AOE healing, the introduction of a team immortality with Baptiste plus the Devs neglecting the game they had for nearly 3 years so they could “change the definition of a sequel” leaving 2 tanks with overtuned abilities not all Tanks in general.
Did you ever play OW1, or do you just scapegoat tanks because they don’t die instantly, like every other role does.

Role lock issue, and tanks were not fun to play in the later days of ow1 because that were so reliant on, you guessed it… Healing.
And guess what that is caused by… 5v5 and giga buffed supports.
The problem is healing it has always been healing, if you think otherwise you need to try playing tank now and again especially in the classic mode when the only team healing was from Mercy, Zen, Lucio and Soldier76.
If you want an Overwatch without Tanks, you simply don’t actually like Overwatch and should be playing a different game. All three roles are core to the game’s identity and always have been.
Tanks are often problematic but so too are Supports and DPS. It’s just the reality of balancing a holy trinity game and the conflicting wants of the roles. Perfect balance doesn’t exist for this genre of game, it’s the price of having unique classes and kits.
Super Saiyans are too OP. Everyone goes super saiyan now.

Yea, it was a strat for the team to counter widow, cause they didnt had a gifted hitscan(aka the only reliable widow counter)
All the tanks metas in the game were due ana being able to negate all healing on top of healing all 3 tanks at once in no time. Nice try.
That alone should already tell you that the tank role was bad if nobody wants to play it.
The problem with this game is
Porly balanced heroes ultimate etc, some ultimates do almost nothing, and some blow up the whole team. Some can sit from across the map and bombard the enemies while some use daggers…

Extremely uneven teams. Low performers don’t get mixed with high performances they would rather have them all in the same team. You either win with ease or get stumped there is no in-between
Even matches are rarer than bigfoot sightings, Wait. I take that back. It’s a bigger chance to spot Bigfoot than to have an even match in ow

If i recall correctly:
The meta immediately before goats was double sniper (and before that, grav dragon). There were various interviews at the time with Goats (as in the team itself) talking about how the comp came about because of the benefits of being able to mitigate the burst damage they were seeing before hand (Widow and hanzo being key players that came up. again, double sniper meta).
Burst damage was king before goats, with Widow and Hanzo being the prime suspects- And goats was a direct response to the amount of burst.
That makes sense, but even then its no the “this comp was made specifically for widow you guys!” stuff that people keeps saying. It wasn’t even made specifically for snipers, but burst damage in general. Of course, the comp counters snipers well, but it countered everything well, too.
No. Goats was caused by tanks and supports. Why would you ever pick a DPS when you could pick a 600 HP slightly-weaker-DPS with an infinite supply of heals?
Old DPS still died relatively quickly, so picking a thicc hero with lots of HP was the natural next best option, since it gave supports enough leeway to keep you alive while you killed the enemy.
Partly caused by Ana making people not want to play tanks. Her role in this may have been less in OW1 (I wouldn’t know) but I’m pretty sure she was a problem before OW2 for making tank unfun to play.
Facts.
I was a GM at this time.
GOATS was simply just the strongest composition at the time. Double Shield as well. Neither were created to counter snipers. Widow, though strong, was never as oppressive as she currently is in 5v5, and was by no means a “server admin”.
Baptise was the issue to double shield, not sigma and orisa.
Does double shield work with Baptiste but no sigma?
Sigma was a bloated monstrosity nevertheless
And why Lucio and Brig were a staple for GOATs
Lucio for the speed to make it harder to hit the squishies
Brig for the armor packs onto tbe other two supports.
What made Orisa + Sigma uncounterable was Fortify and Kinetic Grasp making them too tanky when up close to enemies.
