Even If You Believe "Blizzard Needs To Make Money" (...)

There are still better ways they could go about it, than the current system.

I mean, look at some of this stuff

First, the way they use Legecy Credits is complicated and convoluted, at best. Like, it astounds me that you can’t buy certain OverWatch one cosmetics with your OverWatch one currency, but you can buy cosmetics for OverWatch 2 heroes. Because… That makes sense…

And, on top of this, this currency isn’t even earnable in game (I’ll touch back on this later).

Second, you have this absolute crap show of a BP. Heroes are locked behind a grind/paywall, “free” cosmetics are just throw away trash, you don’t get your premium currency back upon completion, etc

And the real rub with all of this is, it wouldn’t take much to make this a better system. You could do a number of things, such as:

  1. Make all OW1 items purchasable with legacy credits
  2. Make legacy credits earnable by playing underserved roles, or buy leveling up or whatever (similar to how legend tokens work in Apex)
  3. Remove the heroes from the battle pass and make it cosmetic only
  4. Make it so the battle pass doesn’t expire
  5. Make it so that if you complete the battle pass, you get enough currency to purchase the next one
  6. Make some of the free cosmetics better

The thing is, most of these things are not asking a lot of the game/company. Many of them are already industry standard and/or are implemented in other (successful) F2P “live service” games. Implementing just one or two of these suggestions, would provide a lot of goodwill toward the playerbase.

Because, here’s the thing, much like Nintendo, Blizzard has been allowed to exist in its own little bubble for quite some time. They got away with this due to how “polished” and popular their games were. But, they’re pushing to be part of the F2P “live service” market now (at least with OverWatch 2). So, this means that you are now competing with other titans in that industry. Your Fortnites, your Apexs, and so on.

Even if your game isn’t BR, its still implementing “live service” tactics, which means you are competing with other live service titles, whether you like it or not. And, while I can see people spending money on the 1st and 2nd battle passes, due to them having new heroes and people wanting to play them as soon as possible (especially for competitive), what about the third battle pass? The fifth one? The 7th? The fact of the matter is, outside of heroes, you’re not offering anything that enticing (imo). And you definitely aren’t valuing the time and effort of the non whale players enough. And the thing is, I could see people spending more money in places, like the shop, if they felt like the rest of the game was rewarding them properly.

Also, yeah, I get that the whales are the ones who bankroll your game, but they’re not going to play it, if everyone else leaves, because they’re fed up with all the bs involved with your game.

Just something to think about…

Not sure why people do not comprehend this. Do not get me wrong, whales and other various sea creatures such as the leviathan or jormungandr are enigma. Very difficult to understand. However, I THOUGHT it was common knowledge that these beasts require an audience to impress. Without that, they need a somewhat compelling (by their standards) reason to egregiously spend.

The only viable path for Overwatch is “collection.” But there is no way to show off your collection besides playing in game. But you know, showing off you were inept enough to spend what could have been a house and/or car in a dead game is not exactly what stimulates these beings.

I feel this model is more for dolphins. I would be surprised if it worked.

Funny you mentioned the term dolphin, because as someone who did spend around $500 in the previous game, I wonder what I would actually be considered.

And, the thing is, I spent that money, because I felt like my time and effort and even financial “investment” (though I hesitate to use that term) seemed worth it to me at the time and still does (since all my stuff will carry over into OverWatch 2, as soon as they get that all fixed, lol).

But this game? Outside of wanting to buy the pass to get instant access to the heroes, I see no point in spending money. As I’ve mentioned before on these forums, I play every hero to varying degrees, and $500 in this game wouldn’t even get me one of those $20 bundles per hero (not including if I would want to buy OWL skins, BPs, or anything else). For reference, playing a decent amount back in the day and spending about $500 in the previous game got me: all the base loot box cosmetics, all the event loot box cosmetics, and every owl legendary. Looking at how the monetization is set up in this game, it is absolutely abysmal, in comparison.

Edit:

So, yeah. I have no real issue “putting my money where my mouth is”. If I’m enjoying myself, and I feel I’m being rewarded for everything I put into a game, I do not mind supporting its constant content and development. But when I don’t feel that way, why would I play it much? Let alone spend a decent amount of money on it? At that point, I would rather just play something else and spend money there (which I do, in games like fortnite, a lot).
