EA's plans to add ads in-game

It just sounds like we live in hell and company bootlickers across various industries don’t care enough.

Because they are most likely getting desperate for any slice of monetary income. Even luxury sports brands are getting to the point where they are attempting to build “more affordable” luxury cars. This is because most people who can afford luxury cars have already bought the cars they wanted… and not everyone who buys luxury cars will buy the same brand. So not only is the luxury market already saturated, but the working class have no need for luxury vehicles. What do they do? They try to make their cars “more affordable”… like the Porsche Macan, which is the “advertised” vehicle in this case. It’s a lose-lose situation for Porsche but it may bring in some money for Blizzard to keep the lights on.

A majority of mobile apps have video adds already.

If the game pops one up on me unexpected, i either shut the app and restart or put my phone down and ignore it. This makes me uninstall games.

The best use of video adds are the ones where the player CHOOSES to click the button because they want a reward. Imma still ignore the ad though.

Plenty of games have the option to pay to remove apps too.

If it was like you described (an add whenever you’re respawning or whatever) i would never touch this game ever again

What a way to tell everyone that you are just a shop with a game attached.

I don’t mind what they do now ( a corner pop up, outside of the game, that you can hide ). But yall. I see enough advertising in a day, I don’t want it where I relax anymore than it already is.

Not entirely true, sometimes it works in a game. Like in Sport games with the ads on the field or in games like NFS where Trucks and Billboards are part of the world. Those things do not interfere with the game and can give it a more realistic feeling.

Do people really look at those advertisements? If I’m playing NFS, then I want to race cool sports cars around the map in circles. I’m not looking at the billboards… that’s a distraction and could ultimately lose my position in the race.

Same thing with soccer… not that I play it, but if I did, my focus would be on where the ball currently is.

Thanks for the explanation. I have no idea about cars

Aren’t people already paying for advertisement now with Porsche.

It works with sports games a lot of people used to mod real ads into sports games before eating got big to buy them.

For games like overwatch no.

Thats the point, its subtile. Its not in your face. But its still there and can be used as Adspace. Even if you do not actively looking at it, your brain will subconsciously recognize it.
And taking NFS as an example, you are not always racing, sometimes you want to enjoy the World, just cruising around. Or if you take screenshots, you will encounter those ads. Hell, the Billboards where even collectibles in NFS Payback.

GTA has the same possibilities. They just have trucks with Sprunks or Pisswater driving around instead of real ones.

If it fits into the world and is subtle it can work very well. Imagine an ice hockey, football or tennis stadium without sponsors and advertising space. Or in various racing games like F1 where there are actually sponsor logos and ADs everywhere. It would be strange without it and would counteract the feeling of reality.

Do you mean buying the Porsche skins? Probably. I’m not sure if any of that money will go to Porsche… even if it did, it wouldn’t be much considering how they might have to split that. Even now, looking at the skins… they’re not exactly inspiring. I know people will buy them just because they think of the brand, but the skins themselves are… lacking to say the least.

If my brain subconsciously recognized it, then I would know there were real ads on billboards in racing games.

If it’s implemented in a way that makes sense I don’t mind.

Like a coca cola billboard in an OW map would be fine.

Heck, I’ve been playing NFS underground 2 again and it has burger king signage/billboards in game.

If it’s done tastefully it’s fine. Just don’t give me pop ups or anything i have to click away.

Yeah they are paying for the privilege of being the advert

I speak as someone who bought two LSF skins :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Example: If you have a map set in a city, and there are fictional generic stores, I wouldn’t mind those being actual brand stores if that meant there’d be more funds for the devs (not the suits) and funding of content.

To be honest I find it more jarring to have a characters wearing cosmetic skins of lets say a car company and you have a character as a walking ‘Porsche’ billboard.

In-game ads are more suitable for sports games in my opinion, like having the billboards around a soccer field display actual ads like they do in real life instead of having them all say ‘Playstation’ or something.

Ever since seeing the kind of crap that goes on in mobile gaming thanks to looking over my nephews’ shoulders, I’ve known this day would come. That stuff like obnoxious adverts would make their way to PC and console gaming.

I would not play a game which made me sit through adverts, whether it’s OW or any other. But I’ll not be surprised if most people will.

I have no use for ads. I will not play (or stream or “purchase” or view or visit anything that has ads I can’t block.

You could say the same of the K-pop thing or the Cowboy Bebop thing. They may be marginally topical, but those are franchises that wouldn’t mind more mindshare (and sales). Those are ads, too.

But nobody notices. Nobody is going to notice the Porsche thing, either, if it has no branded audio.

They COULD be obnoxious with branded skins, but so far they haven’t.

Blizzard will pay Porsche. Blizzard need the licences to use the Porsche brand. Racing games use a big part of their budget to get the brands and cars into their game. Thats the reason why no vehicle in GTA is a real brand, Rockstar does not want to pay millions to the Brands.

Its a collab, not a Ad. Blizzard uses the fame of Porsche, Bebob, OPM, Le Sserafim to generate Skin sales and boost the interest in the game. Most of the money that the skins bring in, will go to the collab partners.

A Sponsor on the other hand gives money or services to someone and in return gets space for their brand. Such things like The Billboards or Trucks in NFS are sponsored ads, Coca Cola gives EA a big chunk of money to get their logo onto those Adspaces.

Everyone can be influenced in different ways. And just because you don’t remember doesn’t mean it didn’t work. Many of these subtle ads are based on your buying something.
To take the Cola truck again as an example. If you drive past it all the time, you may not actively notice it (that means you might not remember it), but subconsciously it may be that at some point you want to drink a Coke and the advertising worked. That’s the psychology behind advertising.
