Was discussing this concept with someone and thought I’d share.
Maybe its obvious, but some don’t see things this way. Anyway let’s discuss
Don’t focus too much on only eliminations!

Seems more to me that Overwatch at its core is teamwork for a pursuit toward victory (I hope that can be agreed on).
The gameplay revolves around this core as four points on a circle and are equal in theory but may vary from game to game in actual occurrence:
- Objective Control
- Healing / Shielding / Armoring
- Zoning / Area Denial
- Damage / Eliminations
It matters to understand these points because to tunnel vision or hold one above the other allows neglect to the others which prevents understanding. The four points work together as a team of concepts in a team based game in the pursuit of victory via teamwork in order to have fun.
What are the definitions of the four points? It might be oblivious, but leaving things to assumption does not usually result in understanding:
Objective Control
Taking and holding a designated area or payload.
Healing / Shielding / Armoring
Reversing damage to base health / Preventing damage to base health / Preventing damage to base health & Reducing damage effectiveness.
Zoning / Area Denial
Keeping the opponent(s) at a specific distance / Preventing opponent(s) from entering area.
Damage / Eliminations
Emptying opponent(s) health bars / Temporarily remove opponent(s) from the map and remove opponent(s) active participation on the map.
These four points play on each other. You can start at any of them, and end back at the one you began with and potentially think that the start point circling back to itself is the center of gameplay.
This is how they relate starting from each point:
(Objective Control) is effective to hold with sustain via (Healing / Shielding / Armoring) which is effective with established place that is safe through (Zoning / Area Denial) which is effective with the threat of (Damage / Eliminations) which is effective at establishing (Objective Control)
All the below repeat the above, but from a different starting point:
(Healing / Shielding / Armoring) which is effective with established place that is safe through (Zoning / Area Denial) which is effective with the threat of (Damage / Eliminations) which is effective at establishing (Objective Control) which is effective to hold with sustain via (Healing / Shielding / Armoring)
(Zoning / Area Denial) which is effective with the threat of (Damage / Eliminations) which is effective at establishing (Objective Control) which is effective to hold with sustain via (Healing / Shielding / Armoring) which is effective with established place that is safe through (Zoning / Area Denial)
(Damage / Eliminations) which is effective at establishing (Objective Control) which is effective to hold with sustain via (Healing / Shielding / Armoring) which is effective with established place that is safe through (Zoning / Area Denial) which is effective with the threat of (Damage / Eliminations)
