Does anyone else NOT ALWAYS want be the barrier?

I’ve played a lot of games as the barrier. I like playing as the barrier. It’s fun being barrier 90-95% of the time. I’ll pocket barrier tanks as healers, and I’ll protect them with off tanks.

Every now and then, I don’t want to be barrier. For some reason though, more often than not, nobody else wants to be barrier. I’ll play 10-20 games with off tanks, or healers, and be the only person willing to play barrier.

I find this is a problem, as I can’t get the same experience as I give to others, if nobody else is willing to play the barrier other than me in most circumstances.

Is ANYONE ELSE feeling this problem?

Yes. Yes I have noticed that. It’s one of a long list of reasons I don’t like comp anymore. No. Zarya and Hog are not a good tank combo, I don’t care that you aren’t on a dps…someone else be a main tank for goodness sake!

I know how you feel m8. That’s why I got an alt account. I’m a Shield tank main on my main account. I use this account to talk like Kermit the Frog in voice coms, and play a lot of Lucio. After I get my fill on this account, I start to miss the Rein Barrier and go back to my main.

Main tank is not a role for the faint of heart, especially the higher up ladder you go

its a good thing at least Rein and Winston are some of the most fun characters if you know what you’re doing and your team comp isn’t terrible.

Obviously it’s nice to have a change every once in a while, but Orisa and Reinhardt are #1 and #2 most fun heroes to play for me, so I rarely get bored of them. A lack of willing tanks does not bother me very much as it means I get to play my mains every game…

I think Orisa helps, but a decent Brig gives you the soul crushing realization that she can’t compare to Rein in the Brig killing department.

And you have to swap to Rein or lose.

Well i just get used to have a barrier, so it’s honestly too uncomfortable for me to not have one.
I tried to get back to D.va once but DM is no way a decent replacement and bodyblocking with Hog ain’t the same.
So i see no problem with that unless i really wana try Ashe.

don’t play if you don’t want it

Yeah. It took me a long time to develop as a DPS because I never got good tanks. I have hundreds of hours on tank and love the role but even at my SR (masters mind you) anyone who wasn’t a tank main was mediocre at best. We need to somehow get this community to be more flexible and actually learn the other roles.

The sad part is this wouldn’t be an issue if Blizzard encouraged flexibility. Adding quests to play certain heroes or roles for rewards would be nice. Hell, even adding some kind of role swap reward like playing a game as any role other than what you played last game and get bonus Exp/SR.

Such a niche market for main tank, being only Reinhardt and Orisa for front line selection. Winston KIIIND OF counts as a main tank, if you want to be a trolling monkey that backs up divers.

Main tank is the role most people don’t want to play.
Main tank is my best role.
Main tank requires teamwork and coordination.
I play solo queue and no one communicates.
Main tank is frustrating.

That’s how it is, rinse and repeat.
I’ve stopped playing comp all together, cause screw playing tank in solo queue.

I’m basically refusing to play Rein at the moment because I’ve got tired of him. I’ll happily play any other tank, which via lack of low level GOATS and D.Va being so popular is usually a vain attempt at Dive, but no Rein.

Winston and Orisa are risky against many comps, so there’s 2 main tanks off the table. So we have 1 depending on team comp, Hammond is technically a main tank but his use is still niche and he can’t really be substituted for one.

Yes and I’m tired of having teams where no one wants to play a barrier and all I can do is watch them get shredded by spam

meanwhile other team runs double shield + junk and Widow or something ridiculous that just eats my team alive

I used to main main tank before I switched to Doomfist. The reason I switched was because I never got the chance to play anything else as there were so few main tank players relative to other slots.

As soon as I started playing Doomfist - “Hey play Reinhardt”. “Why don’t you play Winston?”. “Don’t play Doom”. I guess main tank players aren’t allowed to play anything else at all then.

Today my Doomfist and main tank play is about the same, but when I’m not killing literally everyone as DF, I get told to switch pretty often. If I’m playing main tank, I almost never get told to switch (I guess people are afraid I’ll switch off main tank) even if I make some obvious and costly errors.

Point is 95% of your teammates won’t bother to look in depth at how you’re actually playing and just expect you to perform 100% of the time, because god forbid you make any mistakes at all at the cost of their SR.

Thinking about rein as a barrier means you are a bad tank

I do this sometimes. Mostly because I’m sick of nobody using my shield, or not getting flanker protection. Either of those two things, make me feel terrible while playing main tank. With Orisa I can at least get divers off me, however with Reinhardt, Genji just stands on my head until I’m dead or Tracer runs circles around me.

48 minutes rein, 3 minutes orisa.

Just edit the thread to say rein instead of barrier.

That was last season’s placement comp on this account yes.

As a Widow main, the less barrier tank mains… the better. Feel free to quit, fam. I would greatly appreciate it as I am definitely benefiting a lot from tank fatigue within the community.
