The abandonment of the Workshop is probably the biggest mistake Overwatch has ever made. That’s not even an exaggeration too, like you could compare things like Brig launch and GOATS, double shield and abandoning content for years to work on OW2. None of that compares, because at least they introduced Workshop at that time allowing us to fix problems and create fun environments ourselves. There are so many bugs and obstacles that prevent creativity and design in Workshop right now that it is brutally frustrating to work with. Max Ammo function doesn’t even work anymore. Winston’s ult healing is bugged since they changed the amount of health it gives. Things that you literally can’t work around and prevent you from employing your ideas. If another hero shooter comes around with a more active custom environment, it will probably quickly take over.
No, they’re getting dumber.
They don’t care about what players think on the workshop. It doesn’t make them money or attract more players.
Building an active player co-creation community makes sense. Many games have generated more revenue than the game itself because of Steam’s creative workshops. They’ve even relied on workshop to keep their games hot more than a decade after release.
But Blizzard has precedent, as shown by LoL and Dota, which most people know about but don’t realize came from War III’s DotA Allstars.
Overwatch workshop seems to be repeating history.
But I still want Blizzard to pay attention to the workshop, it would make the game better.
You could open up skins for AI bot in it, to boost skin sales.
You could also provide some features for better communication between community developers and players.
You could bring back some of the “Removed” Abilities in the workshop, such as Orisa’s Halt, Protective Barrier, Hanzo’s Scatter Arrow, etc., so that those who like them can continue to play. (And since you can bring them back in April Fool’s Day mode, why not do it better?)
ANYWAY, there are a lot of things you can do to make the co-creation community better than doing nothing at all!
I’m sure they’ve actively said they aren’t prioritizing workshop right now, and honestly it seems the biggest part of the playerbase is in quickplay/comp… but why? Vanilla overwatch is just so boring to me; and frustrating to many others. If more players started playing solely custom games I feel like things would get better… maybe. Custom games have always been like an underground in the Overwatch world where you can chill and do whatever you want without much consequences (except putting bad words in your title, illegal stuff, and maybe(?) aimbotting) and I’d love for it to stay that way. Not sure if getting substantial amount of more custom game players would change this at all but I still think there’s a possibility.
But yes… at least fix the bugs. Roadhog’s rework screwed over how button detection works with him (Although I haven’t checked in a few months now so maybe this was fixed? hopefully? it’s been a year so i hope so)
It’d be nice if they at least acknowledge the issues and just say it’s not a priority…
I have not touched quick play, competitive, arcade or anyother official game mode at all. They definitely need to invest more time into workshop.
