Most of my competitive games now lack a tank player playing main tank.
Balance or “meta” aside, how do you feel about playing matches without having a shield to push with and play behind?
For me, this doesn’t feel like Overwatch and I really hate playing with just off-tanks every match. As a support main, I feel a bit caught in the wind. And when I play DPS, I usually would like to play around my team’s main tank shield.
It feels like this game is veering closer and closer to a DPS orientated experience, which I dislike. I purposely choose to play OW when it came out because it wasn’t like most FPS games. It just doesn’t feel good anymore.

Yeah I personally don’t mind it I have never had to rely on Shields myself anyway
There is so much cover available within the game maps
I am really grateful for this Meta teaching people to use cover and even myself I have improved at not exposing myself as much

I play hog/zarya like I play rein, and I have a lot of fun with it. I wouldn’t say I have as much fun as I do playing Rein, but it is interesting and actually feels more like I am a tank. I am taking the damage as hog and zarya as opposed to my barrier with Rein.

The Tanks and Snipers probably enjoy it a lot.
Healers, not so much.
Except for Ana mains.

I like it until someone decides to play a sniper.

Pretty certain people love playing behind barriers, they just hate having to shoot barriers.

Um, are we playing the same maps?

Heavens no. It’s absolutely miserable. Feels like dodging death every time I GA to a target.

If our tanks know the role and aren’t just picking Hog/Zarya because they’re meta, I love it. I love playing an aggressive Mercy, pushing up to boost the tanks, while having snipers in the back to provide a quick exit if needed. Especially love if we’ve got Ana, so I can prioritise blue beaming even more

Some maps have enough, many do not.

DPS doesn’t feel all that different, since I was usually finding angles around shielding anyways.
Support is pretty great though, there’s way more opportunity to play aggressively, and applying utility abilities seems way more impactful and important now too.
Ironically enough, this meta feels miserable playing tank IMO. Hog is not only my worst tank, but is a big counter to my best ones as well, so that probably contributes to my experience.

Sounds like I need to quit Overwatch then. Apparently, many people actually enjoy games without main tanks and turning every tank into a bruiser (which is what half of the tanks in this game already are).
Because I’m miserable in this “meta”. Everything is too DPS, fast paced, chaotic for me.
I like Overwatch specifically because it isn’t like most FPS games. I like tanks that protect their team and having shields to rally behind. I like having supports actually feel powerful in a game. And I like heroes with different and various functions and abilities.
If the devs want to make the tanks more DPS, bruiser focused in the future, then I’m out.

Not having a main tank somehow manages to make doom harder to play.
You don’t ever hang with your tanks while on doomfist (unless you’re a punch bot cough samito cough)
But having a main tank on the enemy team gave you a rough idea of where the enemy team is grouped up, as a team usually hangs around the main tank for protection.
But now? Everyone’s just spread out. Ashe and mercy on one high ground, widow on a different high ground, ana near tanks but a bit back, and then the hog and zarya just pushing everything.

My Bastion gets even less use than before, Sombra gets more.
I actually use Mei as a shield counter, to help my team push into the enemy shields. She’s not getting much use either.
That’s basically what an anchor tank does. Where the anchor is, is where you consider the enemy’s position. If the anchor tank is 50meters in front of the payload, you consider the enemy’s progress based on that rather than the position of the payload.
If the team seems to be overextending from the point, having an anchor tank just behind them makes it seem like they’re not overextending. And if the anchor tank decides they’ve had enough and retreats, the overextended DPS feels naked and has to retreat as well.
Without the anchor tanks, the “team” tends to just spread out and fight their own duels.
You’re charging EMP more now, but you’ll also have to get used to single and dual target EMP’s since they’re so spread out (You can’t EMP backline heroes like snipers and ranged supports, as well as dive tanks at the same time).
Solo EMPing the hammond may seem like a waste, but you’re more likely to get your EMP back before you get a chance to do a four man EMP.
i think jeff said that’s the plan
I don’t mine. My personal stance is that I’ll work with what we have. I can play Junkrat with or without a main tank.
Everyone should be flexible with their fav hero like this. If you’re not then you’re not that good IMO.
I think it’s fun now that people have even less reason to tell me to get off the “off-tank”. I dislike that it took destroying orisa and sigma to do so, but I don’t get 3-4 people whining about how they need a shield anymore.
I basically have 2 choices for tanks: hog or zarya.
Does that sound fun?
