DirectX 12 support is here!

So I’m kind of confused on what DirectX 12 is/does. Because my directX version on my computer is 12, I have run games on directx 12 before, like Civ VI. But my gpu is definitely ancient by today’s standards. What’s the difference in this case?

EDIT: So apparently my GPU supports up until feature level 12_1, so maybe Overwatch uses a version that’s more recent?
EDIT²: Yeah DirectX12 Ultimate would be feature 12_2, so that seems about right. Pity!

I have this problem where i can’t put the game in fullscreen anymore, and i know it’s this feature. Is there a way to revert it?

DX12 doesnt have or need fullscreen. Borderless mode replaces it.

Actually it also depends a lot on drivers and vendor software. NVidia has usually had better performance in OpenGL while ATI/AMD were better at DirectX. The Dolphin devs have had to deal with all kinds of issues with mobile GPU drivers in particular, some of their devblogs are a lot of fun to read.

currently DX12 mode in overwatch has no full screen mode :-1:

I need fullscreen mode, because it changes Refresh rate.

I use 60Hz when working on desktop and watching movies to save power.
and 165 Hz for gaming.

Fullscreen not necessary in DX12, no drawbacks to borderless anymore.

drawback is windowed mode does not change refresh rate. It uses current desktop refresh rate

I use 60Hz when working on desktop and watching movies to save power.
and 165 Hz for gaming.

It’s not, it means they are looking to match Rivals in the worst category and become as optimised as rivals.

It’s just dumb.

If they wanted performance should have gone with vulkan.

They are trash features.

Only two games have done justice to need them cyberpunk and metro exodus.

Well you know what, you got me there. I’m unsure I’ve ever seen anyone use such a configuration before, but makes sense I suppose.

It’s technically supposed to be better but in reality dx11 is faster in most games that have both and vulkan beats both by a mile even though it’s resource hungry.

Initially it will be there as it pre caches shaders again give it some time and see if it goes away or still is there then report it in feedback.

For those who have shutters - you can try to manually delete the old shader cache from drivers. Not guaranteed, but it helped me
I can guess why, but I’m very bad at explaining it

My old laptop is not even running well in DX11 :joy: below 20 FPS and with shutters.

Ouch… That’s rough. Sounds like maybe time to update the hardware. If it can’t run Overwatch, it’s really going to struggle with some more recent games.

For example, I consistently get over 450 fps with Overwatch, and I only get about 160 on Marvel Rivals.

There are some tuning things you can do that might help.

I found this video to be one of the best. Using a custom dynamic render scale nearly doubled my fps by itself. That setting had the biggest impact for me.

I live in brazil. Hardware is too expensive. I was playing in GeForceNOW, but after recent changes that ruined GFN service i stopped playing overwatch almost forever.

And its bad because i’m curious what they will announce in 12, Feb. (I’m expecting an big workshop update, even if it don’t occurs)

Boosteroid has a new server location in Brazil now!

Yeah but full filled of giant queues. I was able to play only two times GOW Ragnarok. And still risk begin banned because blizzard support confirmed only GFN is trusted cloud provider.

We had an recent problem people using anti afk bots to lock VMs, since boosteroid don’t have session time limit, people still abusing this.
