Director's Take - Continuing the 6v6 discussion

I am so excited to try these experiments.

I was a tank main all through OW1 where my biggest gripe was the cc stacking. I never liked tanking in OW2, but liked the hero reworks they did. I think 6v6 tank will feel a lot better to play now that there is so much less cc around.

I also think the passives would fit well into 6v6, particularly the dps passive.

OW NEEDS this!
When the game had a proper team setup (6 players) it had cohesion, it felt like you were part of a proper team. One of the things 5 players and the other changes brought to the game was a ā€œfasterā€ game, but that also isnā€™t so great, what made OW great was it wasnā€™t too fast and thus there was a lot of potential for outplays.

**OW needs one other really important but simple feature back:
Casual group finder for the base game modes.
Before the swap to OW2, the group finder was full of groups queuing for either ranked or quickplay, these groups encouraged and facilitated socializing. People who wanted to chat and communicate and have a good time joined these groups, while those who wanted to do things solo just queued up with the big queue buttons. The problem is now with OW2 the group finder seems to be entirely a list of workshop groups, so the social group element died off in a big way. You (the devs) NEED to bring back this simple in game UI that facilitates groups for normal game modes only, a different button just for these basic games apart from the workshop ones. If you do this the game will re-flourish. If you donā€™t do this, it will still stagnate, as the social experience was a big reason many players (myself included) bothered playing the game. The gameplay alone isnā€™t enough, its the socializing thats important, and if its not easy for players to find the groups that will socialize on mic, then they wonā€™t bother playing the old game either.

We will see how the test turns out, but Iā€™d bet on 3 tanks, 1 dps, 2 supports. And I think many people do not want all those tanks each game.

They are doing something similar to my suggestion only I would change it to min 1 max 2 (for tank) max 3 (DPS and supports)

Your 6v6s vs 5v5s experiments wonā€™t matter if the game is filled with cheaters you will continue to lose players.

Fix the No.1 problem in this game - cheater infestation.

Exactly! The entire point of going back to 6v6 is to have a second tank. Nobody wants triple tank. And the people unhappy with 5v5 donā€™t want solo tank either. And solo supporting is also usually miserable. 2/2/2 or we might as well do nothing.

A 2/2/2 format will also be tested as well. Not just min 1, max 3 and a 5v5 mode with different restrictions for a QP hacked.

We will be hosting two 5v5 format experiments in Season 13 that are also aimed at testing flexibility within this format, similarly to the 6v6 tests. Weā€™re planning a Quick Play: Hacked coming soon, which we are calling ā€œLimit 2ā€. This will be 5v5, with the maximum number of each role limited to two. This includes Tanks, but they will be tuned to Open Queue balance, meaning they will have less health. You can freely switch heroes and roles as long as the new role doesnā€™t already have two players.

Ooo! Iā€™m looking forward to this. I tried dipping my toe into the OQ Comp pool in season twelve, but was put off by tri- and quad-tank comps. I didnā€™t even finish my placements. A two tank limit would be perfect, though!

Iā€™ll be sad if the 6v6 versions still has a limit of three when it lands. A max of two tanks is all thatā€™s needed, imo. A limit of three doesnā€™t really solve much; it means there wonā€™t be quad-tank but since 3/0/3 is possible thatā€™s what games will devolve into pretty quickly. OQ Comp is already pretty much like that with 302. I donā€™t see the point of that test. But hey, hopefully you guys change your minds by season fourteen, and itā€™s great that any of this is happening at all, really!

2/2/2 wont work cus of queue times

It literally feels like no one played the game 2018/19 onwards or we wouldnt be having these discussions

We tried 2/2/2 and tank players bottlenecked the queues because having to find 4 tank players per match of a similar rank took too long.

I saw but frankly I think that itā€™s already obvious without even testing it that thereā€™s obvious problems with the min 1 max 3 idea.

It doesnā€™t have to be role queue. Just 2/2/2.

Thatā€™s cool and all, but when are they going to revert Sombra to last season? Seeing nothing but Widow and not being able to play Sombra is getting old fast.

How can you have roles locked to 2/2/2 without it being role queue ā€¦.

Just a ffa grab your role first nonsense ? Yeah id rather the game die than queue into a game and have to race to lock not only my hero but now also my role

In the world where a surge of players join this mode and continuously play it, then we have the signal we need to do more with it. I think what that ā€œmoreā€ is depends on the level of excitement. Is there a world where both 5v5 and 6v6 exist permanently in Overwatch 2? If you had asked me a few months ago, I would have said no.

This is a very unrealistic expectation for a mode that you are going to shove in the arcade instead of making it a main mode. If it somehow manages to exceed the interest of 5v5 even as side mode, it will only mean the 5v5 was even more terrible than imagined.

No role queue. Just role select. Min 2 max 2. First come first serve. Open Queue with hard role limits basically

Honestly true, which is why my original 6v6 idea was min 1, max 2 tanks, max 3 everything else. (With the ability to go over these limits, with a massive penalty for doing so)

As long as they also nerf AOE healing along with the tank nerf, there is hope that goats will not happen (but of course we wonā€™t know for sure until we get access to the patch)

Sounds atrocious and i personally think would make the game unplayable

How do you even rank people in that system??? When anyone can be any role how do you balance for that level of randomness?

How do you rank a player who is plat dps and gm support? What rank are they being matched into when they can be either? If you match them into a plat game they can lock support and roll the lobby. If you rank them into gm they could get forced onto dps and throw your games
