Associate Game Director Alec Dawson updates players on the successes of Season 15 and how they’ve led to bigger, better changes in Season 16.
I’m so happy to get this update!
It’s always interesting to read the Director’s take!
Any word on possible upgrades for Overwatch on the Switch 2 or support for its mouse mode joycons?
Maybe an unlocked frame rate could work well as it has VRR support? Or a 40 FPS cap mode with 1/3rd V-sync?
Competitive 6v6 Open Queue was the third most popular mode in Overwatch 2 during Season 15 according to time played…until it was usurped by the Totally Normalwatch April Fool’s mode.
Please make the April Fools’ mode permanent - it’s so much fun and so hilarious!
Had a blast running driving courses on Reinhardt!
Shrike isn’t Double Nano btw.
I see this claimed a lot by the 6v6 crowd but remain skeptical of its validity for a few reasons!
- The claimed benefit is not in any way tied to 6v6 as players could always run two (or more) tanks in open queue including 5v5 OQ
- Tank remained unpopular even in the 2-2-2 format
- All this means is that one has an additional player on the field that happens to be in the tank role - there is nothing inherently “buddy”-like
- Having a second tank doesn’t guarantee synergy nor does it mean that they act in the capacity of a “buddy” any more than any other role could/would
- One tank won’t necessarily work with or even care about the other tank since there is no obligation to do so and there is no difference to having the additional team member be on any other role where synergies also exist - particularly between Tank and Healer, but any role can act in the capacity of “Tank buddy”
- Is there any particular benefit over a “buddy” healer or “buddy” damage dealer? Not unless specific synergies are exploited which again there is no guarantee of
- It may even be argued that the addition of a second tank hampers the first as healing and other supporting resources must now be split between the two tanks
- The perceived benefit appears to largely be placebo - in the same way that many players designate 2-2-2 as the one and only valid team formation and outright reject any deviation regardless of actual viability
One other thing!
Please consider reducing Reinhardt’s pin cooldown in 6v6 - I’d gladly trade that for one firestrike being removed or shield health reduced!
It’s his only mobility and it’s his most fun ability in my opinion!
Where Overwatch Classic?
Good news for 6v6 enthusiasts: we’ll be continuing to run Open Queue (with a two-tank limit) in both Quick Play and Competitive throughout Season 16.
Thank you!
Competitive 6v6 Open Queue was the third most popular mode in Overwatch 2 during Season 15 according to time played…until it was usurped by the Totally Normalwatch April Fool’s mode. Googly eyes may reign supreme, but 6v6 modes are holding their own, as are standard 5v5 modes. On average, there’s a 3:1 ratio of players choosing Competitive 5v5 over Competitive 6v6, respectively, but the 6v6 population has remained steady.
Thanks for the numbers.
I’m not surprised that people prefer the quality of life stuff that RQ offers, but I’m glad that there’s room to improve OQ. Max 2 Tanks has been a lot of fun, imo.
I’m happy for the people who prefer 6v6 OQ but at the same time sad that I’ll be losing my 5v5 OQ!
It’s not open queue though from what I’ve heard.
Maybe it could be an Arcade mode? I haven’t poked my head in there recently but there used to be loads of different types of deathmatch modes and minor tweak stuff like Low Gravity. Surely one of those could get elbowed out and replaced with 5v5 OQ.
Yes but I’d also like it to be a competitive mode rather than just Quickplay - so if they choose one I’d hope they go with a Competitive 5v5 OQ as a mainstay in the arcade!
Goats Classic should also come back as well - in fact both Goats Classic and and Normalwatch modes should be permanent!
(Or at least kept around until the next iteration of those modes!)
I understand that there may be concerns around spitting the playerbase but in this blog itself it states that the queue times remained healthy - even with all of these multiple modes running concurrently!
i would love it if you guys gave genji some love and gave him some transformative gameplay other than him healing his self, not exactly the most fun perks, theyre very underwhelming fun wise
“Season 16 on the Horizon” and yet the map is still removed.
I hope they bring back the Clash maps - they were brilliant!
mei is getting right click back…dam!
If he’s hinting at mei getting her freeze again
RUNNNNN…everybody….RUUUUNNNNN!!!
Corona Sombra FFS . Please no !
I still don’t like Perks.
Locked On gives a lower cooldown for Pulsar Torpedoes for every enemy hit, encouraging more active gameplay.
Somehow someway we keep finding ways of making heroes that already play themselves easier. It’s crazy.
Basically auto pilot at this point, the hero plays itself and is super easy to get value with.
Please no. The man barely has to slide 3 feet of momentum for it to count as a pin instakill on non-tank targets and the target doesn’t have to be directly in the path. If the target sidesteps out of the path then Rein’s Dyson vacuum hidden passive sucks you into it as if you were.
Please consider enabling Wide Groups for 6v6 comp next season. They said it was done to improve queue times, but 5v5 Open Queue comp had it enabled with an even smaller playerbase.
Wait mei is getting her freeze back but not mccree ? give us the old nade as a perk
