Director’s Take: Happy Holidays

“ Thank you for your involvement, feedback and passion…”

…But really, where can I actually send direct, open feedback to the team and feel like I’m really being heard and considered (with replies back too for establishing dialogue), instead of having to fight for attention here on the forums to do so?

It’s honestly so hard to actually share our genuine and good-in-faith feedback, reports, bug fixes, suggestions with what we have right now. I once remember seeing a survey popup in Overwatch when competitive drives were being tested, and I was excited to see an open text field at the end so I could finally share my unrelated feedback directly to the team. See what’s going on here? It’s inefficient, the forums.

Anyway, merry Christmas to Team 4. Please take care of yourselves.

In short:

  • Hazard is balanced
  • Jade weapons will go away (like expected) after this season
  • “min 1 max 3” will be the next 6v6 playtest
  • the drive this season will be special (longer?)
  • the next season will have a rank reset, new weapons for the year to grind and some big change to comp like S9 last year

Sooooo we’re not gonna mention or even acknowledge the people that wanted: 200HP heroes back with the 6v6 tests? Inflated HP pools to go away? Inflated bullet hitbox sizes to go away? The necessary obvious changes that are needed alongside it? Basically… a total reversal of the Season 9 changes that made the game less fun, less engaging and less rewarding for A LOT of us? Do our voices matter that little that we don’t even deserve a single word of acknowledgment?

One more thing by the way. 6v6 is making me NOSTALGIC. I love it. In a more personal note, it’s great for the tanks, because honestly, there is less pressure for you to perform, you can enjoy more pre-match hero banter between the two tanks, other heroes like Wrecking Ball are much more valid to play, you know. And it makes things much more fun and of course, isn’t that what a video game is meant to be?

Side note, can we get people talking about this? Can we PLEASE tone down the frequency of the “I’m on fire” voicelines? It’s been super frequent, off-putting in fact. Why would you be playing as Moira for instance, and you’re just casually moving the payload, and all of a sudden, she shouts and claims her prowess as “unassailable”? I can’t help but think deep down, so many of us are getting sick of just how often we hear these lines - yet, nobody wants to admit it. But I would - I’d quickly use a “No” comm to negate the On Fire voiceline to get us out of our misery.

So here’s a reasonable solution, and a solution people are gonna be like, “I never knew I needed this”. You know how there’s two states of being on fire, On Fire and Blazing? Instead of triggering the On Fire state right off the bat and hearing the voiceline, instead, you should work your way up to Blazing status to hear the “I’m on fire” voicelines instead.

Why? Tones down the over-the-top frequency. We can enjoy regular hero elimination lines a lot more - especially contextual ones where another on fire shoutout gets in the way. It makes heroes much more relevant and relatable because they’re not so out of character. And of course, the on fire voicelines aren’t negated completely, so they can be enjoyed more due to having to work hard for them.

Anyway, yeah. That’s something I really needed to get off my chest. I really want to see that change - a simple quality of life one that’ll really give us a big sigh of relief so the heroes don’t act immature. Let’s chat about it.

well, those past 2 weeks ive been playing a lot of marvel rivals and this game has taught me a lot of things about overwatch and my perceived attitude of its development team that i couldnt put my finger on for a long time.

  1. marvel rivals, while overall not being as polished as overwatch, does a lot of things right right out of the gate. some of the things that either took ow a looong time to get there or that we still dont have for some godforsaken reason. like an official source that lists all relevant numbers and stats of a hero. or planning an official stat tracker for winrates, leaderborards, pickrates etc. yes, the rivals devs said they plan that, take note blizzard. your playerbase deserves this and they are also not too stupid to use it.

  2. you get the feeling that the rivals devs really want to make a casual game at the core, but they also respect the competetive playerbase and know what they expect out of a game. i dont get that feeling with team 4.

  3. the marvel rival devs know what they want. their vision is graspable and bold. they put thought into how the roles play and what kind of gameplay they want and dont want. some examples: the map design has thoughtful healthpack placement. all maps that feature high ground give enough options for characters with little to no movement abilities fast and viable options to reach those high grounds. most notably jump pads. those exist in overwatch but are used super sparingly.

when it comes to the roles, they made tanks that feel like they can survive but dont feel super opressive to play against. dps that are deadly but for the most part feel punishable and supports that are mechanically stimulating and rewarding to play that dont feel like they fight for their lives against the tank for entire teamfights without really being able to get away. most notably, marvel rivals has no support that can just pocket and dodge their way to victory. which also keeps the dps and tank powerlevel in check.

again im not saying marvel rivals is balanced. but atleast its not frustrating to play.

overwatch has never been more frustrating to play for anybody involved than in the last year.

again let me bring back the point about blizzard not being confident and constantly trying to reinvent itself and making the game worse in the process: the rank system and matchmaking as a whole.

weve had rank resets and rank reworks galore since ow2 dropped. they either didnt change anything noticable or made matchmaking worse for shorter or longer periods of times. istill run into ppl that havent played for like 4 seasons (or like 20 games till then) and now are in an elo that is much too high for them, they go something like 5/17 and make the expereince completely misarable for themselves and their team. and they give the enemy teama free win which they also dont enjoy. but its not their fault. they where doing their best. your ranked system is obsessed with making people hardstuck by resetting them over and over and essentially rewarding players that dont play much bc their rank doesnt move at all and when they rank back in the system is biased towards boosting them.

your development approach is aimless, its frustrating, you have no idea what youre doing. some balance patches read like an aprils fools joke. (everythings miserable, better buff torb hammer but keep widow untouched)

i am sorry but no more. theres now a competitor that is seemingly willing to put in the brain, the effort and the skills it takes to make a great game. wake up, finally.

PS:
its now to late to flatter the playerbase. you took us for granted for too long.

PS2: id like to add the fantastic approach of adding hero bans for high elo in rivals. one example of an idea that sounds bad on paper but in reality is just good for the game period.

Uh…they’re constantly fighting for their lives. If there’s no Hawkeye or Hela to literally never peek they’re getting dove by up to 4 heroes 9 times out of 10 and only 2 of these supports have achance at getting away, normally.

sorry, but have you played loki or mantis? very hard to dive. loki bc he just survives and jumps between his clones, mantis bc she has a sleep grenade and heal over time and the dps of a zen. jeff is also pretty hard to dive bc he can spam his movement ability whenever he likes. sure, some supports are more divable but they are also a lot more lethal and peeling is genuinely woth it in rivals i found. in ow, ppl just will go for selfish plays instead of peeling bc that works more often than it doesnt in soloqueue.

I expect the only reason the community hasn’t been raging about this in mass is that most people find Jade weapons ugly. If/when a widely attractive weapon drops, there’s going to be meltdowns.

And like, what about new heroes? And new players ofc. It’s so stupid and only serves to turn people off.

Based on your feedback and some of the things we saw during the trial, his effectiveness was originally not quite where we wanted him to be. He was at ~50% unmirrored win rate

There were unmirrored matches during the trial? I assume mostly sweats swapping to mauga to try to farm him so the stats are probably skewed. Either way the numbers here seem reasonable for a new hero

we’re super excited about and think you will be too, coming in 2025

you could announce literally the best patch in OW history and half this community would still seethe about it lol

be sure to read our very rhymey blog from earlier this week (I did NOT write that, by the way)

Or did he?

Expect us to come back in 2025 refreshed and ready to share all of the things we have in store in the weeks ahead!

k, cool

If i may chime in real quickly, can whatever big shakeup you have in store for us be handled better than in S9? Those changes caused a huge rift among the playerbase and took a very long time to level out to something more enjoyable. Please take great care and thought when implementing any proposed changes and perhaps allow us to test these changes first so we can give feedback on how to better implement it or decide its not such a good idea. Also, i would personally like to see a slower implementation of said proposed changes across multiple seasons so each season has something new to look forward to rather than trying to cram it all into one update like with Season 9.

I cannot stress enough how poorly handled the S9 changes were initially. It took until Season 11.5 - S12 for things to get to a happier, more balanced level

Anyone? Does anyone care about this? I bet a lot of us do. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I miss when we’d get 5 free loot boxes and a cute holiday screen. I also miss Jeff doing his Yule Log stream.

This is another reason Mercy is so popular on console that I think is honestly underrated, while there are plenty of heroes in this game with very little mechanical-dependency, she’s the only hero that allows you to use mobility to launch yourself without looking in that direction, or needing to quickly flick back to the fight if you do look. She’s not only basically aim-free, but also much less jarring and clunky than most other mobile heroes. The best Mercy players still use a high sens on console but for those who prefer not to, she’s a great option.

Thanks for bringing back 6v6 and for creating all of the incredible Winter Wonderland and Avatar: The Last Airbender skins!

Happy Holidays Devs! :snowman_with_snow: :snowflake: :christmas_tree: :tada:

I’ve literally never noticed, thought, or cared about this one time.

But I think something like a simple toggle to turn them off for people that hate them like you would be cool I guess.

Like… why remove Jade weapons permanently…

I was under the assumption that we would simply be able to get them with legacy credits after they were replaced by a new skin design. I regret ever giving them the benefit of the doubt.
