No, it is seriously not detrimental to be a straight white male, it’s really not. However, you will find that when straight white males start saying things like ‘representation doesn’t matter’ or ‘there’s not gender bias’, people will be like ‘well yeah, you’re a straight while male, what would you know?’. Because those are things that straight white men don’t deal with. I often think it’s a subconscious thing, but some of them write off other people’s experiences because they themselves haven’t seen or felt it.
I did hear an interesting thing about blind auditions for orchestras a while back, and how the number of female musicians increased dramatically because they were implemented. Sometimes bias is subconscious.
Some places that are taking steps to hire a diverse set of employees are doing so in an attempt to counteract exactly this. It’s not a perfect solution, but there is a reason for it, to provide opportunity to people who would miss it otherwise.
