Crashing since the new update

Ever since the update launched, I’ve been able top sit in the game for about 5-10 minutes before it just crashes, and reinstalling didn’t fix it. My drivers don’t need an update, I’ve reinstalled several times, I’ve tried switching from steam to battlenet, nothing changed. What’s weird is that i tried to do a custom game, and it worked fine. i was in for maybe half an hour before i got bored and left. i then did the tutorial, because i was bored, and again it worked fine. but the second i got into an actual game it crashed. Then i reopened the game, and got into another round, and crashed again.

Is anyone else having this issue, and if so, how would i fix it?

That depends on why you’re crashing. What does your DxDiag say? Have you checked for overheating (not temperature averages)?

I used a thing called Hwinfo64 to check temps, and none of the temps went over what it listed as the max temp. So unless im using it wrong, or it doesnt work in the first place i dont think its a temperature problem. And ive never seen the DxDiag thing before, I got it pulled up but i dont know what to look for to tell you. As far as the bottom note section, that says it doesnt have any problems under each page.

You have to export it to see the errors, the GUI doesn’t show them.

  1. Open Start Menu, type DxDiag, then press Enter.

  2. Click Save All Information.

  3. Name the file whatever you like and click Save.

After you have the report:

Note: If you have trouble posting the URL, highlight the link and click </> on the post editor toolbar.

Assuming I did it right, this should be the link.

I’m seeing a lot of people with drive issues. SSDs need 15–20% free space to function properly. Right now your SSD has 7.6% free space.

I don’t know where you have Overwatch installed, but be aware that your secondary drive doesn’t meet the system requirements for Overwatch since it is an HDD. It’s also lacking available storafe, sitting at 1.7% free space. This lack of space on both drives is choking your system performance.

The Windows Disk Cleanup utility can help remove old Windows install files, but you may need to offload things to external media.

There are no errors related to Overwatch in the report, but there are several Windows update errors. A component the system requires to fully apply an update is missing. I recommend running the Windows repair utility after you free up space on the drives.

Beyond those issues, you could simply be experiencing a failure with the CPU. Most of the Intel 13th and 14th CPUs, particularly the model in your PC, will degrade sooner than expected due to a manufacturing defect.

A Few other things: Do you have any apps you’d recommend for clearing out old files? Second, if i was having a cpu issues, would the only real fix be getting a new one? And third, would the performance issues explain why it was only crashing during actual games/ the practice range? Like i said in the og post, i sat in a custom game for about half an hour without a crash, before moving to the tutorial, and only after getting into a real match did it crash.

The Windows Disk Cleanup utility is good enough. Don’t use those bloatware apps like CCleaner, etc.

You can slow down the degradation with BIOS updates and limiting the speed of each core with the Intel Tuning Utility. However, it could still fail faster than a CPU without defects. There’s no way to know the exact timeframe. Some people were still able to RMA their CPU, but I believe it was replaced with the same model, which also has defects. Intel didn’t produce any new ones without the issue, they moved on to producing the next model.

I can’t really answer how different modes put pressure on hardware since I am not an Overwatch developer. I’m just giving my assessment based on your reported experience and the diagnostic log.

I believe I’ve fixed the storage issue, but my game still crashes. Is there any thing else you can recommend, beyond getting a new cpu? Its only a year old, so im hoping its not the issue.

Applications suddenly crashing without errors is a pretty common sign of power and/or CPU issues.

Did you look through the Windows Event Viewer? I’m curious what’s happening around the time that the game closes. Errors are marked with a red :x:.

Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System

So i did it a few times just to be sure, but im not getting any kind of error in the event viewer. I dont think anything new is popping up after a crash. Wouldnt other games crash like ow if it was a hardware issue? No other game has had issues like this one besides Rivals, and that tends to fix itself after a few retries.

The game is closing and there is nothing in the Event Viewer? Every event on the computer, including connecting to the internet, shutting down, etc., should be listed there.

But it is happening in another game, so it still points to an issue using the hardware. Whether it’s power-related, drivers, or the physical circuitry itself would need to be evaluated by a PC tech.

At the very least, no nothing was popping up in that section after ow crashed. I did look through other sections, but no errors after the crash.

The errors wouldn’t be for the Overwatch client, they would be for kernel or nvlddmkm.sys. There were zero errors total?
