Connection lost to overwatch servers

Hello,

i just lost connection to the Overwatch Servers right at the start of a Comp Match.

I confirmed that i had a working Internet connection at that time, no disconnect in any way or paket loss or automated internet reconnection.

Can some Tech guy tell me why this happens and how to avoid it in the future?
(First time this happened, i play since release of the game)

greetings
Sleep

PS:
Oh, and i lost 50 SR and got a 10 Min ban because of that connction loss, good stuff…

Yes, had a similar problem around 2 hours ago. Lost 50 SR for the server being poop. No internet lost in my end. C’mon Blizzard, I understand you can’t know if someone intentionally pulls the plug on his internet or its a DC but a least make your server stable enough that we don’t lose SR because of your servers.

Spent most of the evening gaining back those SR, not helped that I had teammate DC mid-game as well.

Unfortunately all disconnections and game crashes counts as leaving the match and will be penalized appropriately. The game server has no way to discern a legitimate disconnection or game crash from one that is forcefully caused by a dishonest player to bypass leaver penalties. You can learn about this policy here:

Remember if you see the message, “Lost Connection to the Server” in the title screen or the message “Failed to Connect to Server” in yellow text in the text chat box, this means there is something that disrupted your connection to the game server and not a problem with the game server itself. There can be a variety of reasons this happens including those that don’t disconnect your computer from the Internet. There is great troubleshooting to start with that can most likely resolve most issues and I encourage you to check them out here:

As always if nothing in that guide works, please reply saying you completed these steps and additional advice can be provided. Good luck!

Yeah I have the same problem. I can make one two games then in middle of a game connection lost. I dont even play comp for Now it too risky to lose a lot sr and its not even our fault.
Please do some patch or work on your servers thanks

Hello WyomingMyst,

thanks for your reply.

I’m aware of that policy, just a bit frustrated when this happens but oh well, it is what it is.

Regarding my Connection Issue, it seems to be solved so far. I had no other disconnects from the Overwatch Servers this week. I will post here if that should happen again.

I’m not really sure what exactly the problem was, though.
I already flushed my DNS Cache the week before the Issue appeared including releasing and renewing of my IP. Im also resetting my Router on the weekends as well, so i dont think the issue was because of a flooded router.
My Drivers are up to date, im not using any other applications while playing Overwatch and i’m also not using a wireless Connection.

I got the “Lost Connection to the Server” message that popped up after i got thrown out of the Match and back to the title Screen. So strangely, no text chat box message.
If you dont mind, would you be so kind to list a few of those Reasons you mentioned that include not disconnecting my Computer from the Internet?
Just so i can keep an Eye on this in case i lose Connection again. Also, i’m a bit curious about why exactly this happened.

thx in advance
greetings

Yep, if you have gone through the end user troubleshooting I have linked and the disconnections have not stopped, the next best step is to investigate the connection route itself, a WinMTR test is useful for this:

WinMTR instructions:

  1. Download WinMTR from Download WinMTR-v092.zip (WinMTR) (Console players need a Windows Desktop Computer connected to the same network as their console to do this.)
  2. Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
  3. Open the WinMTR folder and select the 32 or 64 bit version. Choose whichever one corresponds to your version of Windows.
  4. Run the WinMTR.exe
  5. Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
    Network Graph
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like 12.34.56.78:12345. You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the 12.34.56.78
  6. Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
  7. Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
  8. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~

If in the event you can’t even connect to Overwatch and get into any game mode at all, please use one of the following IP addresses based on your geographical region:

  • US West - 24.105.30.129
  • US Central - 24.105.62.129
  • Brazil - 54.207.107.12
  • Europe - 185.60.114.159
  • Europe - 185.60.112.157
  • Korea - 211.234.110.1
  • Taiwan - 203.66.81.98

Update:
I got a disconnect from the Gameservers yesterday, and 2 more today.
All while doing Comp matches.
heres the WinMTR result from today.

The WinMTR isn’t showing any disconnects happening. Was it running when that happened?

If this is from when you disconnected, it could be a local issue (on your PC) and not with your internet connection. Do you have any antivirus application running?

My apoligies, here is the correct one.
I had WinMTR running for 3 comp games until a disconnect occured.
I am using the normal Windows defender, nothing else.

I do see that the ping between your modem and your computer is already reaching 94ms occasionally before trying to reach Blizzard. However, there’s also some mild packet loss where your ISP hands off the connection to Blizzard. I don’t know who owns that IP between f-eh2-i.F.DE.NET.DTAG.DE and ae1-br01-eqfr5.as57976.net. The best I can reommend is opening a ticket with Blizzard with this info, and also with your ISP.

But as for that 94ms ping, if you’re wireless, you want to go wired. And if not, you might need to replace some networking equipment like cables or the devices.
