CenturyLink and Xfinity WA - Increased average latency

I posted as part of the Milan italy thread, but I’m not sure my issue is related. I have been having high latency for several weeks that only seems to be affecting Overwatch. My latency in Wow, for instance is 37 ms (just checked). Normally my Overwatch latency is around 30-50 ms. Now it’s averaging more like 180ms with spikes well above 200ms. It’s noticeable in game. Any help would be appreciated. Here’s my WinMTR output:

Howdy!

Your issue is not at all related to the Milan Italy thread. It just seems one of the handoffs along the route is taking longer than expected. It appears the latency increases greatly after the handoff occurs with the L3 Seattle node to the Equinix Seattle node. We will start to collect data to see if we can verify with more reports. If we can we may be able to reach out to get this resolved.

  • What troubleshooting have you done? Make sure you have completed power cycling your home network’s modem and router. Once the system has come back online flush your DNS cache.

  • Does your issue get better if you play during off hours or certain times of the day outside of 5-10PM?

  • Can you provide the Host IP you ran the WinMTR too or know what server you are connecting too when this issue occurs?

  • Do you play with anyone on the Same ISP that lives near you that has the same issue? If you could get them to run a WinMTR and provide the results that would be helpful.

Thank you!

Thank you for the reply! Yes, I had previously power cycled my router, and I’ve flushed the DNS cache. I’ve checked my ping times and download rates from my Centurylink ISP, all looks great. I’ve played outside of regular times and it remains slow. As I noted before other Blizzard games seem fine (WoW and Diablo III), and other games are playing as usual. Just seems to be Overwatch. I actually have another ISP at my house that involves swapping some cables, I’ll try switching to Xfinity and report back if that fixes the issue.

I’ve done the cable swapping and rebooted my computer here’s the results from my Xfinity ISP, it’s a cable service ping times are still too high. I don’t have much experience on how it performs normally because I’m usually using Centurylink, a DSL service:

Dwgem,

We’ll need winMTR reports from others in your area to do more digging. For now, you should be able to work around this by using a mobile hotspot or VPN client to route yourself around the network.
