I tend to use both interchangeably. I’ve heard cassidy enough times now to where it has stuck, but I don’t correct myself when I happen to say mccree either and a lot of my friends still call him that too because we’ve been playing since the beginning. This sometimes happens when I’m making callouts and not really thinking about the name. In my head, they’re both his name now.
I’ve always preferred using the name cass instead of cree rolls off the tongue better
Well, his name is Cole Cassidy. So that’s what we call him, Cassidy. Or Cass or the cowboy.
It might be easier since calling out Cassiopeia in League also shortens to Cass so used to that in the moment, but just like with anything else - taking the 1% effort it takes to be accurate and say his name right, it’s not a huge deal.
Also Jesse McCree is a terrible person and we shouldn’t give him any acknowledgement by retaining the past in OW.
I call him Mcree, he didn’t do anything wrong so he shouldn’t have his named changed. It’s like Cliff Huxtable and Steven hyde, the characters did nothing wrong, if the actor did something thats something else and the character shouldn’t be changed for something someone else did.
His REAL name is Joel.

What now ![]()
i thought it was AKJ? …
(dam been on these forums too long…)
Idk how people are still pressed about this in the big 25. We’re not far off half a decade since this happened.
The blizzard employee was guilty of being a creeper so they fired him and they changed his name in game
Neither. Just Cowboy. I like to use variation within my games.
Like if I see Mei I use “Satan”, or Junkrat “lunatic”
this. the absolute cringe move to change his name would have gotten more negative attention - but the games reputation was so far in the sewer at that point that the disappointment meter was already maxed out and nobody cared.
Did they change his name in his video with ashe and echo? no
What’s funny. Didn’t even know Mccree was named after someone. Wouldn’t have. If they didn’t change his name.
No. But all voice lines that say his original name. Are not in OW Classic (banter dialog). Also his character name is not McCree, in the menus. So it’s only changed because of real life. Not because of in game universe reasons.
Cree, will always be cree, idc what anyone else says. That would be like changing Mercy’s name to Karen or something becuase of some rl drama. Not my problem
I think it wasn’t even harassment, just that he participated in a text thread that was full of inappropriate jokes. The stuff I saw from the thread were the kind of jokes that 95% of guys make when it’s only dudes around, just shock value dirty stuff, not talking about actually doing anything. They were just dumb enough to put it in a work text thread.
Seemed like a massive overreaction on Blizz’s part just to save them from bad press. I’m calling him McCree. That’s today’s corporate climate, though. It’s all silly to me. The character wasn’t even named to honor the guy; it’s just a cool cowboy sounding name they borrowed from him.
