The brutal truth there is that, it wasn’t. Playing with Mass Rez back in 1.0 and in comp, it was not only difficult to pull off successfully, but it was also pretty risky, and is proof as to why Mercy during that time was considered niche, and F/D-tier at best. What some may not admit is that it was removed mostly due to the more subjective “unfun to play against argument” that was all too popular during that time from big streamers and pro players, and the “hide and res” myth, which relied on the false equivalency of a Mercy player to take cover, when in reality, every player of every hero has to “take cover” in order to most efficiently use their ults. I talked about this in detail in my Mass Rez Mercy | Interview, Dichotomy & The False Narrative thread, and this can further be proven to be the case even now, where people have been discovering in the workshop that Mass Rez / hide and res was not only a non-issue, but it was also quite weak and situational - needing invincibility buffs just to make her viable, and also balanceable.
I myself, as well as many others, have even made versions of the ability and can attest to how it’s completely possible to include in the game and have it be balanced with the right tweaks. In short, the whole “Mass Rez was broken / OP / can’t be balanced” is simply a fallacy that can be put to rest. It was simply a scapegoat used to cover for the fact that the real issue lied with the SR bug/exploit that ran rampant at the time. A bug that existed with other heroes besides Mercy herself in fact.
Agreed. I think a lot of it has to do with the constant 1 on 1 talks with the “sample group” of twitch streamers / pro players. Essentially taking an opinion from a small group of people who doesn’t represent the entirety of the community and balancing the game based on that, is never a good way to balance a game in my opinion. Especially in a competitive shooter.
What is undeniable is that despite these “healthier for the game” fixes, suggestions, and implementations, people are leaving in droves (including pro players and big streamers), longer queue times, and the lack of interest in what is still considered to be quite a young game of only 3 years. I’ve been saying this since the beginning. Elitism and appealing to the pros over the rest of the community is what’s destroying it, and unless they decide to change course and appeal to everyone - not just the 1%, I’m not sure if glimmers of hope with things like the workshop would be enough. But then again, considering that there’s rumors going around that they’ll be ditching this game to make the sequel, perhaps they too realize that it’s too late to try and fix with all the issues present, and that they’ll be better off starting on a new slate, and if that’s true I can’t say I’d blame them.
Overall I’d be very curious to see what happens with the state of this game in the next 1-2 years.
Rest-assured. I’ve been beyond creeped out with this constant stalking. It’s been going on for almost a year now by the way, and I’m pretty certain that it would go under “Harassment of a forum member”. I’d too question if this violates the CoC. I should definitely look into it.
