It is a good thing. I say it win or lose every time. If someone gets tilted by it then they have deeper problems they need to focus on
Its neutral for me.
If someone from the losing team says it, its good sportsmanship, neutral if “gg” alone comes from a player who earned victory.
“gg, wp both teams” is positive. “gg ez xD” is not…
And recently someone left our group 2 times in qp when we appeared to be losing. In a 3rd match his team won and he wrote “gg”… So I guess it was not sportsmanship in this particular case.
Ofc this is just my opinion and I admit that I am very… “critical”.
Edit: If it comes from your team, it is meant positive. I write my own team gg, gj or something like that all the time. Even if we lose and there was no conflict in our team.
I type gg because i have been playing organized sports for 3/4ths of my life and after every match we would have to shake hands with the other team and say/mumble “good game” or similar. At this point it is just habit.
Not everyone takes/means it in the neutral/positive way i personally mean it but i doubt i will stop.
Most stuff in games turns into a problem. Once enough people use it as a troll. Everyone will just see it as trolling. Like this example: If I lose a game, leave immediately, and I see the green hand endorsement. Many people used that to basically insult the person who lost. Because the green hand can be a vote from the enemy team. And has been directly used to do that on me before. So now it’s a troll tactic.
I use it when my team gets stomped into the ground. Which happens around 4 out of 5 matches.
Usually say something like gg hope that was ez enough for you.
But sarcasm, intonation and context can give it a different implied meaning.
I can say Good job in the same way
does that mean the words good job are bad?
Well no they are words
Not everyone is a sarcastic meme-oriented troll…
gg as teammate chat (blue) means gg.
gg as global chat (orange) means “I moped the floor with you lmao”.
Do they tell you that is why they did it or are you assuming?
People saying it as a sign of good sportsmanship is fairly rare, though it does happen.
Now it’s more of a “hey, we won” with the losers saying nothing or saying it as a fu to the other team.
I am just going to make up abbreviations that mean nothing and see how long it takes for the outrage nut jobs on here to ask for meaningless abbreviations to be banned. That would be a fun social experiment.
I always say gg (^-^)/ Game over 30 ~ 60 seconds before we win the game
If gg are the only letters spoken take it for what it literally is “good game” and move on…
people that read further into this are super insecure
You see I sometimes give sportsman ship endorsement to other team.
An example.
4 players left recently on enemy comp and 2 of the left players basically stayed in spawn while team stood outside there spawn.
Me giving sportsman ship to the 2 enemy players was Intended as respect for staying. It sucks for them there team left
Yet they may see that as me being insulting. Not the case
Thanks everyone for the replies.
i’ve lost sports games in real life that weren’t close, and good game was still exchanged.
stop being so soft.
When something’s spammed and overused it loses its meaning, especially when you can’t even be bothered to spam the whole sentence opting to use 2 letters instead.
If you really care about sportsmanship actually say something about the match, point out something cool the enemy dps did or mention how you saw the tank block what would’ve been a game winning ult etc
Saying GG is meaningless, it has 0 value whatsoever because like I said, it’s been overspammed to the point where it means nothing. People just do it because they like to pretend they have good sportsmanship when they aren’t really doing anything.
It’s like people who tell themselves that drinking diet soda is healthy to justify bad eating habits. And just like diet soda still being bad for you all GG does is waste chat space that could be used for something of actual value.
I typically take “gg” as a sportsman-like gesture unless they say “gg ez”, which is obviously meant to be sarcastic.
I think it is a lot of fun when the losing team starts typing “gg ez” because it becomes a big spam funny fest.
Overall, don’t take it too seriously! Just say what you think is appropriate!
Way to perpetuate the toxic masculinity there buddy. You know the “manup” and “don’t be soft” mentality that has infected our culture leads to 3 out of 4 suicides being male, higher rates for alcoholism and substance abuse, and depression. I’m saying this to make it clear that telling someone to “manup” or “not be soft” is toxic in itself, emotions are healthy and part of being human.
I also bet online games like Overwatch would be way less toxic if the dudes playing them didn’t feel pressured to bottle up feelings and emotions and get some therapy. I wish blizzard would refer people who regularly get reported for abusive chat to mental health sites since most toxic people are just people who never learned how to deal with there emotions in a healthy manner, so they come out in other ways.
i have been and will always definitely say “gg” at the end to assert dominance so i can feel good about myself, because i’m just an a-hole like that.
But sometimes there are close games where both teams did really well and there’s that united feeling of self gratification from everyone because we all did our best, and we’ll genuinely say “gg”, usually followed with “that was fun”.
imo you should be able to say whatever the heck you wanna say as long as it’s still under CoC and follows along that competitive spirit vibes. Banters are fun.
