Why can’t companies just make full games without dlcs or anything and not holding back other companies potential? I know I’m wishful thinking and they need to make dat money, but still.
Activison Blizzard where holding Bungie back sure, they got out the contract and are doing well. Not sure what publisher they are using now though (if any)
What other company is holding another company back?
In a nutshell, because Activision didn’t own Bungie. They were Bungie’s publisher, and Bungie still existed independently.
If you research Blizzard ownership over the years, you’ll discover that Activision actually owns the majority of Blizzard stock now, thus the Activision-Blizzard formation run by Robert Kotick. Blizzard cannot divorce from Activision unless Activision sells its stake.
Blizzard has never owned itself, and has been owned by a larger company for a long time. This time around, it’s Activision.
(It’s actually a bit more involved, thus the “in a nutshell.”)
