Thats it. That’s the post. And all of you who gaslit us regularly, you all deserve everything that happens. For the record a fantastic game was ruined by dumb stuff like this.
Previously, Blizzard has stated that there are no winner or loser queues in Overwatch 2. The only thing the OW2 matchmaker considers when putting teams together is player MMR, according to a January 2023 developer blog
So theyre just contradicting themselves in the article. Pure clickbait.
The writer is then just lazily implying that because people go into loss streaks, which blizzard “has admitted”, there must be a losers queue, which does not follow.
Well, “sabotages” is quite debatable.
Anyways, what Morgan describes the system actually doing here: https://x.com/SrslyPaladin/status/1791249376859611573
is quite different than what the patch note said. They might need to revisit it.
Parts of the thread below:
The vast majority of Overwatch matches look incredibly close to the matchmaker. but in some cases we make matches where one team has a slightly more noticeable advantage over the other (Still very competitive though!)
When we would make these matches, the matchmaker wasn’t paying attention to whether any players in the match were on a loss streak. So by random chance, we would sometimes make matches where a player on a loss streak would get put on a team that was at a disadvantage.
This just felt like a bad match for us to be making. It seems less likely to be a fun match.
So all this change is doing is telling the matchmaker to stop making those matches, just avoiding this case we think is clearly bad.
TLDR: If you are on a loss streak, the system tries to avoid you putting you into a match where the team differences are big enough for the “uphill battle” / “expected” to be in place to begin with.
So its not adjusting team compositions, it’s preventing that match happening at all.
And now we can wait and see if Dexerto will catch up on this? Probably not.
Point is unless you’re the one who goes on 10 game losing streaks, You can be sure that your game quality is going to go down because what they’re not telling you is what the likelyhood of someone who has 55%+ winrate is going to have a much better chance of getting someone on their team who was the constant factor in a string of losses.
They don’t tell you how often someone who is climbing is going to have to try to carry someone who habitually loses. Every 10 games? Every 5 games? Every single game? They’re admitting that instead of letting people drop like they’re supposed to, You are now algorithmically obligated to carry what the game is literally deeming uncarryable. And maybe it’s not because they’re so bad that they deserve to be that low.
That person you are having to carry may have lost that many games because they intended to grief/lose. That person may be playing on a smurf and have no intention of winning. Losing the game is what gives you an opportunity to see where you’ve went wrong. People don’t get better by placing them with better players. If the people who habitually lose learned from their team they’d cooperate better and wouldn’t be losing. Furthermore if these people are habitually losing what good does it to them to win a game where they’ve pretty much only had to be present to win?
Who wants this? Who is the person who wants to ruin the quality of a match so the screen can say victory at the end? It doesn’t do anything. Might as well flip a coin and we can all just save the time of playing the match at all. What difference does it make if you need to be placed in a game you will be statistically more likely to win.
How many ego’s per hour need to be defended against people who refuse to cooperate or coordinate?
If you don’t play at a certain level you SHOULD drop, regardless of how it feels. This passes off the responsibility to expect the impossible from both the people trying to carry and the person in a game that has a completely different flow than they’re used to.
It is that it is constantly and completely unnecessarily rigged for “reasons”.
An actual competitive mode matchmaker would be too simple. So some idiot convinced some suits with fancy words and graphs to make an overly complicated and ultimately inferior match maker… again… for “reasons”.
In what world is that reducing competition and how in the world are you rationalizing that was unfair?
You got to a rank higher than you deserved and got corrected. In other words, you previously got wins you DIDN’T deserve so now you’re getting losses that you DO deserve.
if 2 teams are pretty well balanced, but the sticky 1 person who struggling into 1 team, that is sabotaging the match.
Well what makes me think it’s only 1 person? well each comp match i have played (which isnt a lot of games lol like 10 in a month) has had exactly 1 person performing about 1/4 as well as the 9 other people who are very closely matched…
i must be exaggerating right lol, no its why i only play like 10 matches a month now, well that and the gameplay loop of ‘counter swap’ sucks balls.
all this tells me is that the MM doesn’t actually know what it’s doing, and given you can’t go anywhere, online or IRL and not have people wondering how there can be this many badly matched games.
like i played last night i got to listen to a dozen people grief the under performing party that was in all 3 of my comp games (i mean like bro’s 4/13 when everyone else 18/8), i rarely say anything, but that doesnt mean i want to listen to it.
if and when i actually get a game that feels good, more often than rarely, i’ll believe it then.
