Blizzard, please implement Gyro + Flick Stick aiming for the PC, Switch, & PS4 versions of Overwatch

I know what you’re wondering, “I know what gyro is, but what’s flick stick?”. I’m glad you asked. Flick Stick is basically an option where the right stick exclusively handles horizontal movement. For example, you can press forward on the right stick then move in any direction for precise horizontal camera movement. But if you want to quickly look behind you to stop a Tracer from flanking your team, you can just hit down to flick behind you. Any necessary vertical movement can be done with gyro. Here are some examples of this control method in action, which explains the control method better than I can.

If you want to try this out in Overwatch right now, JibbSmart/Gyro Gaming has released JoyShockMapper, which allows you to map these kinds of controls to any shooter for your Switch Pro Controller, DualShock 4, or basically any controller with a gyroscope. The directions are in the video & the description of the video.

It would be fantastic if this was implemented natively into Overwatch, as it would evolve the use of gyro aiming even further beyond what the Switch version already has. And at the end of the day, more options are never a bad thing. You can still have the current method of gyro aiming (gyro-assisted aiming, where gyro acts as the smaller movements for the right stick’s broad strokes, which is what the Switch version already allows you to do but the PS4 & PC versions don’t). But offering this as an option as well would open the door for those who prefer to use a controller for movement but also want more precise aiming similar to a mouse.

haha, halo is better with a ps4 controller haha

His point is mostly about how gyro & flick stick aiming can be a huge benefit for shooters, Halo included. Even in the video, he cites that he prefers the Xbox controller for build quantity, but the lack of a gyroscope holds it back.

well thats because xbox games dont need a gyroscope, we dont want a gyroscope

Again, more options are never a bad thing. Don’t like it, just turn it off. It’s that simple.

I’d LOVE to see this in Overwatch. Most of the examples on the “how-to” for developers show it in Overwatch’s training mode, too.

I don’t have an Overwatch-focused video with flick stick yet, but Overwatch was the first multiplayer game I had it working in.

Of course, this’d give PS4 players a huge advantage over Xbox players, but there’s no cross-play at the moment anyway, so no dramas there, and if cross-play came later, this’d actually mean PS4 and Switch players could play with PC players.

That’s actually one of the reasons why I’m hoping for Blizzard to adopt Gyro & Flick Stick for Switch, PS4, & PC at a native level. Gyro is close enough to mouse & keyboard (not AS good, but not far off) to where you could reasonably have all 3 in the same player pool (provided that the Switch & PS4 players have Gyro & Flick Stick enabled).

It’s called Splatoon and Splatoon 2 camera
Just saying
(Or at least it sounds like it)

Not exactly, as Splatoon 2 handles horizontal movement not unlike your regular shooter where you use the right stick to aim (except limited to horizontal movement for the right stick). As mentioned in the OP, Flick Stick allows you to do something like tap down on the right stick to look behind you immediately. Likewise, you can tap the stick left or right to have your character turn in that direction. If you want to turn slightly, hold down forward (or the direction you have the stick at if you already did a quick turn) & move the stick without returning to neutral to add finer adjustments.

Think of it this way, gyro would handle the X & Y axes, while the right stick would handle the Z axis. The video below as well as the ones in the OP should explain everything.

You’re actually not far off from comparing it to keyboard & mouse. I’ve seen some people play Destiny 2 on PC with a DS4 controller and designating the mouse input to the gyro-tilt of the controller; here’s one example:

I would LOVE to see this configuration option on the Switch version. I hope it happens, if anything for Overwatch 2 because resources.

Why stop at just the Switch version? It should also be on PS4/PS5 & PC.
