Blizzard, fix the ddos problem on PC

I wasn’t until yesterday.

Roughly during code of violence patch, they had a blizzard app update. That messed the game for at least 24-48h. The problem were somewhat random/persistent about til recently, at the time I tracked it to VC, recommending friends to use Battlenet built in and disconnecting from the game one.

We left from roughly 10-15 disconnect for day to actually 0. Check overwatch files, check blizzard app and check the windows updates, drivers update, if there’s a update do it.

If you’re playing on linux a friend of mine had some issues using it also during that time and even today have issues about it on random periods of time. We only started to use in game VC again like 3 days ago, so far we didn’t had issues, but we had several days without issues without it.

Glad to know it im not alone at getting the random crashes to desktop for no apparrent reason.

The pattern appears to be similar, so the player could test the update path and play without VC and see if the issue stays.

Several folks during the patch had the same issue, at least 20 of my friends stop dropping from games afterwards those hints. On the first case was more generalized making all friends playing overwatch drop, after awhile a few kept dropping until they done the same as I mentioned above.

Also, they plan maintenance tomorrow, maybe this thing could be related. That kind of report also should be sent as ticket and tech support part of forum, the player even has replay for it that could help to narrow down several variables. If was intentional or not by example could be easier to know, while wouldn’t be 100% could be at least easier to notice patterns around it.

Hey everyone as a reminder, DDoS attacks are rare attacks that affect a typically large portion of the player base because of a coordinated data spam on Blizzard’s network providers. DoS attacks against a single player only happens if you somehow exposed your IP address to a dishonest user (which does NOT happen through Overwatch alone). Typically if you are disconnecting frequently across multiple games and days of trying to play Overwatch, you are NOT being subjected to any sort of attack, but instead have a persistent technical issue with your connection.

Disconnections can happen for a variety of reasons ranging from trying to play on WiFi (connecting directly through ethernet cables is much better), having issues with your modem, issues with the ISP, or connection hub problems between you and the Blizzard datacenter. This is why it is recommended work through standard troubleshooting first and if nothing helps, run a WinMTR test to map out your connection to the datacenter. We can help with any of these steps in the #technical-support forum.

It is not Overwatch-specific maintenance, just Blizzard Authentication Server weekly maintenance.

There’s been a good amount of reports of VC problems AND disconnection/stability problems since late February. It’s pretty safe to say that due to being in low maintenance mode, this game is starting to become more and more unstable. It might not be DDoS, but it still can be the game starting to have more and more bugs with each update.

I have experienced my first 2 non-hardware game crash in the last 2 weeks since 2019, I think it’s safe to say the game is not in a good state rn, software wise.

P.S. Based on people talking about VC potentially causing this problem and how buggy the game is rn, I wouldn’t be surprised that VC is causing some of the game crash.

I’ve experienced and witnessed this many times on xbox that i can assure wasn’t because of my internet. You start experiencing rubber-banding until you’re kicked to home, re-join and it happens again and again until you can no longer re-join because it says the match is over but you can see it’s still going when checking who you’ve played with. Only ever happened in comp in my experience (beta/day 1 player).

To those who have no idea what OP is talking about, there actually is a bug right now that is causing clients to crash without warning. This has happened to my entire friend group and we are all located in geographically different areas. This is not a client side issue.

I don’t think that it is DDoS, but it acts kind of similarly. My friends and I weren’t even queued for a game yet and the game wouldn’t stay open.

idk if this issue OP is saying is dos related but I’ve seen in popular player streams particularly on EU in t500 players who everyone agrees is dos attacking opponents when the match appears unfavorable in order to win. In particular perhaps 6 months ago in a yznsa stream on anubis with an ana player who I remember everyone was calling out in match chat at the start of the game. Sure enough after being fine the game lags out and the match is cancelled just as they were saying had been happening and were expecting to happen again

Recently in comp tho I’ve been seeing multiple leavers usually just on the one side whether mine or the opponents and its like, usually one person leaves but sometimes they rejoin and then someone else leaves. Its weird and usually just one team

I’ve seen this happen in one of my games on Friday, where five players on the other team instantly disconnected and kept on intermittently disconnecting throughout the rest of the match. They blamed it on us. In the six years of playing this game, this was the first time I’ve seen something like it. The fact that in the past few days this seems to have suddenly become widespread, points to networking problems with or on the way to Blizzard’s servers. The alternative explanation of sudden emergence of multiple malevolent actors on such a large scale doesn’t stand up to rational scrutiny.

could it not be a new exploit or hack? I’ll believe its a networking problem on blizzard’s end but we know there have been lots of new cheats emerging for very cheap and that blizz hasnt bothered to crack down on them for a long time now. Soft wall hacks for example are really common now compared to a year or so ago.

Altho I don’t understand the tech, it wouldn’t surprise me if someone has released a dos software capability for OW somehow. Blizz wouldn’t tell us even if and when they fix it if that were the case I imagine

While not impossible, it is a much less probable explanation than a networking problem.

I’ll roll with the assumption that its networking and not keep speculating about cheats, but I’ll just say that the forums broadly are massively underestimating the amount of hackers in this game right now LOL, its really quite shocking if you look it up how easy cheap and sophisticated they are. People can’t get past the idea that hacks = hardcore aimbot 360 widow flicks when they can literally be like gentle wall hacks and ult trackers or mid-game analysis

The exact same thing happened to me today on a role queu Comp match.
I started to rubberband backwards, then disconnected from the game only. Luckily I could rejoin the game in time. Once I rejoined, out the 5 other players on my team disconnected. Possibly this was due to the fact that I was using a VPN from europe to NA.
All my teammates had the same experience as me.
We managed to win nonetheless, and right after the victory screen we got disconnected again.
I luckily retained the win, although when you look at the career profile, the stats became messed up. Same for the ‘recent players’.

100% this was a targeted attack on me.
What made it worse, is that he continued to do this when I joined a group of friends in Qp right after. Not stopping at me, but also disconnecting some of those players.

Be alert guys. And blizzard, heads up please. This is NOT a personal connection or global server problem.

Cyx is getting loads of big disconnects on stream lol . I had a crazy DC game yesterday too where a few ppl left at the same time lol. So weird

This happened to my team a few days ago. We were gonna win, then lots of my teammates, including myself, were getting sent straight to desktop. Definitely felt like a ddos attack.

It is more than likely a specific data center or Data Center RACK that is being hit. Depending upon the regional group there may be a lease-contractor that has an open port in the administration side of things that was discovered and Blizzard will more than likely have to notify them of it.

Blizzard leases servers like most other game companies and the most they can do is SOME initial management or call the data center they are leasing from and tell them they are NOT happy.

My bet is, it is someone that got BANNED and they are taking it out on the players. Regardless… Blizzard doesn’t seam to unfairly ban players like OTHER companies. So they probably got some hot-head that is mad and doesn’t grasp why they were banned.

I’ve played Blizzard games online for over 15 years and have never been treated unfairly here. But game companies like Behavior Interactive inc are the lowest of the low and deserve every attack they receive. (and more).

This is the second time I’ve had this happen to me now, looking at the Overwatch.log it looks like you get flooded with mute failures before your game will just close, I wonder if I had someone blocked/muted now…
