Black texture flickering on certain maps

Including Numbani, just recently received this issue, never had it before.

Same here with a GTX 1080.
The issue is nearly 100% reproducible when playing on Numbani Defense, it happens always near the first payload checkpoint, between the bus and the car at the corner.
The glitch goes away if you look at any other area, there are no issues with the capture point A or as the game progresses past the first checkpoint, only that specific corner near the first checkpoint seems to be affected.
The game has been running on the same hardware without issues for more than a year prior to this.

Also having the same issue, same spot as Artins90 mentioned, also with a GTX 1080. My GF has a 1060 in her laptop so I’ll test the same spot on her computer when I get home.

Same issue at the same point. Numbani defense when you look to the corner textures start to flicker.
Never had this before. I’m using GTX 1060 with latest driver 416.34.

Edit1: Also i made a full clean install of drivers (using DDU to remove) and run repair game tool. Bugs still happens. What I notice is that the bug only start when you have enemies around that corner. Without them textures works fines.

I had enemy corpses appear as solid black silhouettes on the last point of blizz world

yeah I have exactly the same issue ever since there was a geforce experience update coupled with the halloween update im having black flickering on multiple maps (cant remember which ones) it seems to occur only in the first few games like my gpu (gtx 1080) needs to warm up or something haha. Im also now having issues connecting to the server so rip my late night training room fumbling lol

I’ve been having this issue, only on Numbani. I recorded a clip of it here.

This was a GTX 1080, settings on “ultra.” It was a new card, so I swapped my old one back in (GTX 960) and the issue was gone, even on the same settings. I’ve been talking with someone on reddit also using a 1080 with the same problem, and they said this began around the patch before Halloween or so. They also said that setting shadow quality to medium or lower fixed the issue for them.

Hopefully this gets fixed in a patch update soon though, because it is very annoying. So far, I have only seen it on Numbani and so has the person on reddit I spoke with.

But in the meantime, if you’re having this issue try setting shadow quality to medium or lower.

video shows exactly same issue that i get

Okay, so it’s consistent at least. I just got Numbani in qp after setting shadow detail to “medium” and did not experience any flickering, so I would try that while we wait for an official fix from Blizzard.

I also can confirm the same issue. I7 6700K & Nvidia 1080 Xtreme Gaming. Last Nvidia driver installed available today.

That’s exactly the same behavior I am seeing.
However, in my case it happens when I look close to the car parked at the corner and the black corruption is much more extended when I get close to that area.
Since we are not getting any response or recognition by the developers, I am going to report this issue to a member of the Nvidia driver team, wish me luck.

EDIT: The Nvidia support team asked for a video of the issue so I took one:

No answer from blizzard yet?
I notice another point where it happens… when you are leaving the door on the corridor over the first numbani point.
If you leave the door looking for the ramp it will start flickering also…

So the Nvidia support team says it’s probably not a driver issue but a bug within the game itself.
So I decided to open a ticket on Blizzard support platform, I will post the answer I received below, it might avoid extra tickets opened by other users:

Technical Specialist XXXX here to assist you today!

I understand that you and others are all seeing a similar issue going on within Overwatch. Sounds like there is one specific map and area that has strange black artifacts showing. That can certainly be frustrating, and I’ll be happy to go over what can be done to help with this.

I will be up-front about this in that this may potentially be a bug that’s going on with so many other players also reporting it too. Customer Support is not able to fix bug, and don’t have a “fix all” button, and in cases of a bug, only a bug report submitted to the development and QA teams will help with getting things fixed up for all affected players. As Customer Support, we can suggest steps that may help with the issue, yet if nothing seems to help, then a bug report and some patience while the QA and dev teams tackle the issue would be appreciated.

As such, I have some general steps that may help resolve the issue that’s going on here. Please test after each series of steps, and proceed to the next if it doesn’t do the trick.

  1. First, let’s make sure that there is no corrupted game files that are causing this. A scan and repair of Overwatch can help with that: us.battle. net/support/en/article/7655

  2. There are 2 things that can be done with the settings. Researching this, I found that there is a possible workaround some others have mentioned that helped make those artifacts go away. It seems to be tied to Shadow quality, and setting it to Medium or lower will make them go away in those areas of Nubani. This would be in your settings. Video > Advanced Settings > Shadow Detail

The other thing that can be done is to reset your in-game settings. This would set your key bindings and graphics settings to defaults. Steps to do that are here: support.blizzard. com/article/000126203

  1. Lastly, this did linger for a couple driver versions for you. Changes to the software settings on your video card drivers may cause strange behavior, crashes, latency issues, or even lockups. Reset your video driver settings to correct this problem: us.battle. net/support/en/article/24142

Now, if you’ve taken all those steps but problems are still persisting, then that bug report is appropriate. This way the QA and development teams can get information about what’s going on to investigate and address the issue. Bug reports are done through the forums for Overwatch.

Here’s a link to the specific Overwatch bug forums should you need to do that: us.forums. blizzard.com/en/overwatch/c/bug-report

In the meantime, just a little transparency here on how bug reports are handled; when you contact us about an issue, sometimes we can help and fix it, and get you going again. Other times, there are things that are beyond our control as Game Masters, and those things require our Devs to go in and fix. As much as we’d like to just wave a magic wand or hit a button to make it all go away, there are a few different factors that prevent us from doing so in this case. The main reason we can’t help at times is because sometimes, attempting to fix a thing here on our end may break it further, or cause other unknown effects. In the case of Overwatch, we can’t even interact with the game in any way that would help with graphical issues being seen, and when contacted with an issue like this, are only able to offer troubleshooting that may help if it’s a system issue and not an in-game bug. Due to this, only our Devs can investigate, test, and try to reproduce what is going on. If they are able to do so, then they will start working on a fix.

If our Devs aren’t able to reproduce something, they may sit on it for a while, until they receive more bug reports from other players. This is why it’s super important to submit a bug report whenever you encounter a bug in-game, because sometimes, there may be a bug, but our Devs do not have enough information to figure out what’s causing it. The more bug reports they receive about a particular issue, the more likely they will be able to find a common theme and track it down. This process, however, can take some time.

Most of the time, I will be honest with you, our Devs do not write responses to bug reports. However, this does not mean your bug report is being ignored. Bug reports are intended for tracking purposes, mainly. So if you submit a bug report, don’t expect a response, but definitely know that your bug report got to the right place!

Thank you sincerely for your time here. Take care, and let us know any time if you need any further assistance.

Tomorrow I’ll test lowering the shadows to medium as suggested, I have already tried pretty much all the other troubleshooting steps suggested.
Testing it should be easy with a bot game.

I also have started recently having this problem in the last week or so specifically on Numbani. GTX 1070.

I would like to add to this that not only Numbani has this shadow/texture flickering bug, I saw it happen on Eichenwald’s Halloween map to, near the edge of the map near the first point.

I think it has something to do with the recent Halloween patch, that explains how Eichenwald would be glitching out but not so much Numbani unless it just has to do with an overall change they made to any form of graphical features within the game since the last patch came out.

I get smaller pitch black textures glitching in and out on buildings (stairs, walls, etc…) occasionally on many maps. Last recently happened on Kings Row in the Hotel. Also with a Nvidia Card (GTX 1080)

does anyone test lowering shadow detail?

have been having this problem as well and I own a 1080 too.

has anybody from this thread tried the new Ashe PTR patch and checked if Blizzard caught this??

Shadows set to medium. Still flickering on numbani.
