can we get some form of auto translate option for chat so i can understand my teamates? its 2025 next week and that would be pretty neet
Most newer mobile games have built in Google translate. Have yet to see it on any other platform though.
For asia it would be a great thing
Maybe for other european languages but translation has so far to go still. ESPECIALLY in a game where slang and shortterm is used a lot. It would be bad. real bad.
you might want to check your calendar on that claim.
No it isnāt xD

Technically, thatās no longer a problem these days. I havenāt used Google Translate or other similar programs for a long time, but instead prefer to use AI directly. These translate much better and can even be fed with information to respond to specific words or abbreviations.
Practically, however, this is something nobody will do. An AI request consumes 10 times more resources than a Google query, and Blizzard has no interest in paying for that. So, it would be outsourced externally, where contracts would again be required to ensure that the AI remains available.
Conclusion:
Itās not worth it for the developers to implement this, but Blizzard could provide a chat API so players can integrate it themselves. If it stops working, Blizzard is off the hook.
This would be great in EU. Most people speak English, but Russians and Russian-like speakers tend to write in russian or similar even if they are replying to something written in English.
Remember, they supposedly have AI watching the chat already so this should be trivial.
At my job weāre currently implementing automatic AI translation because the company we maintain an information system for is branching out to other countries, and what Iāve learned is that while AI might be good at translating even long and complex text quite well, it isnāt very good at translating short phrases or words out of context.
And since Overwatch chat is pretty much exclusively short phrases that require context of the current situation to properly understand, I wouldnāt get my hopes up for our future AI overlords to tackle this very well.

They can convince you as much as they like, but AI translation is still bad. Yes, itās better than standard translation sites and translation a few years ago, but its still bad.

so i can understand my teamates
Why would even want to do that in a toxic game like this?

Would you still say that if I told you this text was translated using AI?
Well, I donāt know how you see it, but I think itās absolutely sufficient, and above all, I can run the text through the translator multiple times, and the meaning stays the same.
Not only that but they use shortened words literally nobody understands.
You lose your braincells by that and good luck saying those words outside to other people thinking youre a escaped lunatic asylum patient.

Would you still say that if I told you this text was translated using AI?
Yes. Not even close to something someone would say in overwatch.
AI is pretty decent these days, using it almost daily.
Live translation compared to just documents i believe comes at a greater cost.
Not something any management would sign. Its generates 0 revenue but on going costs.
It gave me a tech nerd the Feeling Apple and Samsung as well as google where expecting from google assisstant, bixby and Siri But those where garbage, Then came real AI and my workload dropped by like 90% I only need to know what I am doing, Not do it myself.
ummmmm i rounded up /shrug
