Well those cognitive changes usually appear after middle age crisis, so still you have 10 -15 years 
I used to play quake2 with music and agree that is was great feeling, but I cannot do this anymore and this is natural process.
The point is that audience gets older and those subconscious small things are being ignored and people leave games without realizing true source of ther frustration
