I know, thanks. I’m not titanium though; this post isn’t big enough to have to cordon off into sections
A lot of people have pride in their country and want to defend it; I don’t think there needs to be an explicit exigence or impetus beyond that. It can be explained in her Eichenwalde line; she’s seen the destruction caused by the kuishin and wants to do what she can to prevent it from happening again
I’ll look when I get home just in case
I pointed everything else out in my OP and the comments.
I’ve known other English majors, they all suffer the same critical response to pop culture, it never lives up their sensibilities unless its maybe an old black and white episode of the Avengers or a particular off-beat movie.
What most people are apparently unaware of is supposedly this is only part 1 of the story with D.va…
I never said that, though. In fact, I said almost the opposite it’s almost exactly what I anticipated
I bet you feel very clever then
I’m not sure what point you’re making beyond patronization; me pointing out my English major before I do a character analysis isn’t really me trying to be holier-than-thou.Sorry if it came off that way
When I say consequences, I mean strictly for the character herself. There weren’t any that actually matter/spark any actual development for her. At the end of the day, Friendzone guys little moment in the limelight amounted to pressing a button, DVa came up with the idea and ended up doing the final execution anyway. Then when she’s recovering, what does she immediately do? Work on her mech. Which the short itself showed wasn’t necessarily a flaw, they just said it was and then showed us why her being a workaholic is beneficial for her country. If it had actually impeded her combat performance any it might have meant something.
What? They were impossible TO miss, because they literally tell you every single thing with zero subtlety.
It’s up to viewer interpretation to decide if it’s deep or not (it’s not).
Clearly she has some sort of PTSD
Regret/remorse flashbacks is not PTSD. Otherwise I would have PTSD after eating Taco Bell every Tuesday night
You say that but the initial responses some people had saying “oh I missed that” to threads where people broke down the short says otherwise
D.Va thought she was going to die and accepted it, breaking/spraining three of her limbs and needing to be revived by defibrillator. She loses one of her mechs and has to rebuild it with Daehyun. I think it’s fair to assume that it will take a toll on her mentally, let’s assume it doesn’t. That’s still a significant amount of physical pain and frustration because she cannot defend the country now.
Also, daehyun didn’t really need a shining moment.
I think people were honestly expecting too much out of the short.
I really liked it. It’s interesting how the korean news also just casually goes over the fact that her friends and team were killed. It also makes her pro gamer grill personality make more sense.
The character had zero depth before at all. Now she has something to work with, which she needed as a character.
very good post
I think most people miss the over the top cheesy element of other shorts in Shooting Star and look right past the (comparatively) subtle characterization.
There’s no ‘uhm ma gawd i got my mentor killed and it changed me’ or ‘uh ma gawd i killed my own brother, i feel so bad…uh mah gawd he’s alive’.
Cliched overdramatization is fun but it’s not quality writing and certainly isn’t a necessity for a good story. A lot of people have got it quite backwards, this short actually holds up to scrutiny…
This made me chuckle
All tea no shade
Exactly. It’s very in line with other overwatch works. In fact, I’m certain it would have been better received if it came out when last bastion or rise and shine did.
I think a lot of it is because the community is just frustrated. With no lore for about a year, I think people were seriously hoping for something that was truly amazing and far better than the other shorts.
Like, the soldier short is nothing to write home about as an example. But it doesn’t get hate because it’s one of the old ones.
I liked that they gave Hana any sort of personality.
Exactly. It’s a turbulent time right now. But I don’t think a bunch of the criticism is fair because so much of it is “i hate this because it doesn’t move the story forward even though it was never intended to and neither did mei’s/76’s/rein’s/bastion’s…” Most of them didn’t, really. Was D.Va supposed to just be deprived lore because of it? Especially when Lol most people complained that they hated d.va bc she was 1-dimensional and now they’re complaining because she got something that didn’t make her 1-dimensional. But it’s okay to hate D.Va because it’s D.Va.
This has been the most consistent complaint to me that is also simultaneously the most ridiculous.
It baffles me, it really does.
“D.Va has no personality I hate her!”
“… D.Va has personality now but I’m gonna find something else to complain about! Muh plot!”
Maybe it’s because I’m bored of the main characters besides Winston too but
btw, have a friend who’s a hunter main. I hear BM is very different and fun. MM isn’t pulling very good numbers, but I hear surv and BM are good.
I actually resubbed two days ago. 119 right and playing as BM. It feels better than legion BM did, hard for me to give a fair assessment of my thoughts until I’ve had some time at 120.
Of course, as of today I’m house / pet sitting until Monday and I don’t have a laptop. So hitting 120 will have to wait untl Monday.
Edit: Wrong day.
Happy to hear! I’m having a good time but work is really hitting me, so I’m only 118. Ugh, I can’t wait to be caught up with my friends and really get into max level stuff.
