Afraid to talk in chat

It’s true that the system is automated, but there is a way to reverse incorrect reports.
I don’t see it often because I think most offenders are reported correctly and they obviously won’t reverse legitimate reports.

But I have seen a couple times where someone stated that they were wrongfully banned and they were able to get it reversed. I guess those people could be lying, but it seems like a strange lie to say “I was wrongfully reported, spoke to Blizzard support and was able to get it reversed”.

What I actually think is happening (if we are looking at people who truly believe they were wrongfully reported and punished) is that they got a notification saying they are being punished and it didn’t show the reason why. They then think to themselves “I’m not toxic. I don’t swear or use slurs”, but Blizzard doesn’t just ban for the harshest words.
Their policy is that if a player is being offensive, it can result in punishment.
That could mean if you just say “GG, our tank is bad” is punishable.
So someone thinks “I never swear or anything” is not understanding that they were being toxic in some form, just not a form they believe is considered toxic, so they don’t even think of those things.

It also takes more than a single report and as far as people can guess, it’s more than an entire game’s worth of players reporting, unless swearing/slurs were used.
So one has to be toxic for many games and get many reports before action is usually taken.

Regardless of how you feel on this issue. The fact is that “toxic” behavior and speech has not been curved at all by this “defense matrix” insert buzz word here. What it has achieved is it has removed any and all social features from the game and made socializing much less inviting.

Maybe the game feels bad and stale lately it’s because the social aspect of the game is dead and gone. I don’t know about most of you but I play with friends and when I don’t play with friends I like to talk and be social and joke around. What really hurt me was the removal of LFG, I still don’t see why that was removed.

no friends gang (at least none that play OW)

I doubt it. You said what the other person said except you thought you said something different because you seem to think Algorithms would be better at differentiating bad actors from false reports… um.

It was removed because the devs said that it was being underused and causing their favorite words, “toxic behavior.” Its the same reason why they took action against the custom game modes. Which to be fair needed to be adressed.

Yeah but when I used that mode I could play with like minded people. Everyone in group felt safe to speak without worries of being reported and if there was someone being toxic they where removed/quickly delt with.

To me, LFG went like this

sit in lobby for 5 mins to wait for someone to ready
play a game
lose
everyone leaves or I’m kicked without a word

All a detection based algorithm would do to factor the report is flag the chat to be scanned. If it finds toxic chat, it’ll depend on the severity of what’s said, but it’ll either add a strike to the threshold, ban them outright (in extreme toxicity cases), or throw away the report.

A report count based system just bans someone once they’ve reached a certain number of reports, giving false reports far more power.

You are one of the few that used it according to what the devs say. But again I take nothing they say anymore as nothing more than just truth stretching trying to cover their own rears.

Cool you know of an algorithm that has that level of nuance? Sell it you’ll be rich. I’m a Software Engineer and I don’t know of any algorithms that can do that. AI maybe but if the data it’s fed ks bad “ie, false reports” then it won’t work either.

Nobody in voice
Chat you better not! lol
It sucks the game is missing that multiplayer feeling toxicity really haha

Methinks a lot of people want to pretend they did nothing wrong when they did, and that leads to this notion that a lot of people are getting falsely banned when it is, in fact, quite rare for that to happen.

I’ve been playing since OW1 was in beta, using chat the whole time, maining my favorite hero even when they are underpowered. No actions, not even a warning in that whole span of time.

Congrats, you’re one of those saints that blizz wants to protect. You are more special to the devs than all of the rest of us that speak about how we feel and then take the hit when people don’t agree with us.

Same. Running Lucio on Junkertown defense when we have a Mercy and full poke back in OW1

It’s really not that rare to never have received punishments in game though.

League of Legends and other games have used that sort of system for years.

Notice how they say “they doubt it?” when they mention the degree?. Doesn’t even know you, all they’ve done is type insults…and they doubt it…

They don’t have the IQ to converse properly without throwing in insults.

I’d like to think most people are “special” enough to remember the humans on the other side of the screen.

OW 1 didn’t have this Defense matrix bs until late in it’s life. I never got banned or warned once in OW 1 and I’ve been playing the game as long as you have. However, I was silenced on my main account twice already for saying GG and GLHF. I have opted to just play on alts now since my main has all the skins that I don’t want to lose.

I’ve yet to get penalized but I’ve gotten a few warnings after dealing with toxic 4 stacks. Also it is elo dependant metal ranks is the worst xD. You often don’t encounter as much toxicity at higher elos.

Oh yeah and it works perfectly for LOL right? See you always argue disingenuously. Can’t you just accept you’re wrong?

You seriously want to use LOL as an example for how game devs managed to successfully curve “toxic” behavior?
