There’s been a lot of server crashes this week, but no ping issues for me. I play on ord1 too and usually sit at around 30ms. Maybe you have some sort of packet loss situation?
Ok you can have the house but you get to take care of 5 kids, 2 old people and inherit a 483 dollar internet bill. ![]()
I always have 80-90 ping but I live in the middle of nowhere and use a 4g cellular connection for the internet. Currently in the process of trying to get either fixed wireless or maybe Starlink that might end up with a lower ping (but there’s a lot of trees here so even those things are problematic). ![]()
In WoW I only have a ping in the low 70s but it’s always at least 80 in OW. I think it might have been lower a long time ago in OW1 but I was also probably using a different service at the time so it’s not necessarily a fair comparison.
You tried doing a trace route to the server?
I usually play on Ord1, but I will be honest I cannot say. I’ve had such low motivation to play recently that I just don’t have enough data. Vendetta has literally killed my enthusiasm for the game.
I’m hoping to hop on for a bit later today. I can try remember to let you know if my average ping is off.
That’s pretty much my normal, it’s fine
I’d just run wireshark or something like glasswire to see if any weirdos are using your internet when you dont know it.
Just because a person has a wireless network with a password on it, don’t mean someone nearby isn’t using your connection.
OK, so I had a few matches. My ping actually was really bad on one match but the others were fine. The first match had like 120 ping but then after that I was in the 40s.
Worth it for the ping
SO I learned something about our connections. The one I’m not connected to right now is 2.4G. I’m guessing this means I should stay on the 5G
Anyway, it’s been confirmed that there have been no new devices added within the past two weeks. No devices have changed from one connection to the other, either. I will still see if we can optimize things by moving some things to the other connection if possible, though
Overwatch does tend to be the only game where I notice these kinds of problems, but then again I don’t play many online multiplayer games. I’ll be trying some tests soon. I’ve tried a general ping test before to some other server in the past, since I do normally get notable episodes of packet loss in this game, and that came out flawless. That was surprising. Meanwhile, IIRC, I ran a tracert or something specifically on my connection to ORD1, and it looked like there was some kind of issue beyond my household. Something out there was flaky
Not much more than usual, maybe just one more device being actively used at the same time. So while everyone is awake, there’s probably 3 devices at most consistently doing something notable on the connection (as in not just doing an update in the background or something, which wouldn’t be happening all the time for the idle devices either). When half of the household has gone to bed, that brings it down to 2
Normally I do have episodes of severe packet loss every now and then where everything drifts into the floor/sky/walls, but my ping is normally fine between those brief episodes. This is unusual
I haven’t since this started, but the thought did occur to me last night. I’ll be doing that today along with another test or two
I really am suspecting that the servers are being flaky. We’ll see what my tests show. I’ll try to run them at a time when I can confirm I’m getting the inflated ping
Then it’s time to blame the game! Crowd cheers
It could also be a bad junction somewhere as well. I ran ORD1 today to check and 11 matches in I’ve had no issues. Ping was bouncing between 15 to 19, no packet loss. Run a ping test when you start having the issue or during the hours that it happens. Take time and document it. If you want to see if it’s within the first few hops you can download pingplotter and use the free trial to see where the pings hiking. First 3 hops is normally your ISP, city and state. Anything beyond that is out of your control.
Use your brain please, we are working through observable network issues that they are having. A lot of people are struggling with it.
Huh? I’ve been a consistent rank for years. Blaming some random lag for my rank would be delusional.
That one probably just rolled in here after witnessing my latest crashout from playing DPS, falling to Silver, and then starting a session on a bad match even while duo’d
Fun Fact: I actually touched Plat on DPS once not that long ago. Like a season or two ago. I also only really started playing DPS in Comp seriously within the past year or two. As for Comp in general, sometime after OW2 release. I touched Comp so briefly before that it doesn’t really count
Meanwhile, on Support, my best role, I’m Plat 3 right now. I’ve been in Plat for a little while now. Earlier this season, I was in Plat 2, and almost reached Plat 1. Hopefully Diamond comes soon so I can have a bit of downtime (you know, to do things like install the RAM
)
One more thing before I continue running tests though, even though I’m sure it’s irrelevant–
Province in my case ^^
Anywhooooo I should boot up the game and see how my ping is doing. If it’s acting up, I’ll be running a good old traceroute and we will see where along the line stuff happens
Edit: And probably a ping test to that server too of course
It’s fine. There’s no reason for them to do that when you’re trying to get down to the source of the issue. You crashout often, yea I do see the threads but hey, that’s life. For now just play the game, observe, run tests, take notes, AND INSTALL THE RAM
don’t worry about the other person, just flag them if need be.
Edit: don’t forget to plot your ping points so you know where the breakage is at.
Are you able to test it using a wired connection, even if it’s just temporary? I think it would be useful to rule out whether Wi-Fi is the issue.
OK I went into the practice range and FINALLY found something which might be the server IP I’m connected to. Maybe. As it turns out, they stopped showing the IP ingame some time ago for security reasons, so I had to try and find it through the command prompt. The one I used before was probably one I found online, and those are apparently out of date
Anyway, I looked through the IPs that the game process is connecting to until I found one that, according to Google’s summary, belongs to the US central server pool. Its source may be out of date, but I have barely any info to work with here so it’ll have to do
So I tried pinging that IP (without the port number), but it totally failed. All of the requests timed out for some reason. Just to be sure I’m not just using the command wrong, I proceeded to ping google.com. No problems whatsoever. It replied all four times very quickly
Time to run netstat again and look for some other IP I guess ![]()
If I really have to, maybe I could at least try it in the practice range for testing purposes if I can find somewhere to set everything up. Probably not tonight though
rubs hands together
Blame the game yyyyeeeeeaaaaaa
And
Install that ram! Points finger ![]()
Good job investigating!
Thanks~ I just tried going over everything again, and haven’t found any new leads
In summary, I found 3 IPs being connected to by the game process. Two of them responded with different average ping times (one was 83, the other was 23). HOWEVER, apparently those IPs are both associated with a datacenter or in the cloud. The 83 ms one apparently being in California, and the other one being unknown. The third one, which is the same one I tried pinging a moment ago (and which the Google summary is claiming to be in Las Vegas, Nevada now for some reason), continues to be unresponsive. Meanwhile, this whole time ingame in the practice range, my ping has been staying at 90-100ms
It’s definitely blame-the-game time, and time for me to take a break ![]()
I’m really looking forward to installing the RAM, I promise. I’m just going to wait until after I’ve touched Diamond first, and/or maybe until after the Drive, because in the very small chance something goes horribly wrong, I’ll be doomed. I know things will probably be 100% fine and it’ll be awesome basking in the glory of having twice the RAM that I have now, but I have to be very careful at the moment with this deadline
just a quick note, sometimes things are unpingable for various reasons that aren’t connection problems.
