What does everyone think if we changed Overwatch from the team based shooter we know and love to be more competitive with higher induvial value like Valorant?
The problems we are running into with team base shooters is core elements are required to be “filled” by team members for the game to function. Meaning you have limited carry individual potential and can not fully express your “skills”. For example the need for healing…etc. We want to limit the feelings of you team holding you back while still provide you with the joy of accomplishing a challenging task with others.
Now how would this look.
Picture this, every hero reworked into damage heroes. You no longer need a healer and you no longer need a tank. It would be 6v6 open queue with wayyy shorter queue times and much easier to balance. Hero bans would be added giving you the power to change the meta to your choosing and sending us a sign that a hero needs to be balanced or a new hero needs to be added to help defeat them.
Unlike Valorant we have a variety of primary attack weapons and powers. Not limiting you to a weapon store but allowing you to express the unique potential only displayed by your hero which you now will be able to lock in before the match under a new draft pick system. Making you the only Ana or only Genji in the match.
Additionally, we would like to encourage teamwork, add further diversity, and challenge to matches by implementing a new ability points system. Ability points will be rewarded for defeating enemy heroes or time on point. Once enough are collected you will be given the option to power up the ability of your choosing through this ability leveling system offering unique effects and mods to your abilities (damage, life steal, AOE, CC’s, Burns…etc).
Through these changes Overwatch will offer our most skill gamers the opportunity to display their prowess in the leader boards proving their hero is the strongest and our casual community the ability to learn and gather experiences with their favorite heroes.
Many Supports are already a lot like DPS. Only tanks would need to be made more similar to DPS. Imagine, shrinking Rein down to the size of a regular dude to account for the loss of HP XD. Or skinny Hog!
The main problem with the 6v6 OQ “make everyone DPS” suggestion, as it always has been, is GOATs is inevitable and will render the majority of the cast useless.
Reinhardt could stay a tank and Mercy could stay a healer ala TF2. The others can be changed relatively easily. Just make Roadhog go on a diet. Keep baby Rammatra and Dva only. Let us play as HAMMOND. Fix Hazard, Mauga, and Zarya to have normal proportions… It could work.
I think eventually Marvel Rivals is going to suffer the same problem as Overwatch/Paladins/TF2 most players don’t like playing tank/healer. Most gamers like to play dps. Which is why Overwatch supports have be turn into semi dps heroes already.
This is just that thought carried to its final conclusion and may even allow Overwatch to capture all the new players brought to the genre by Marvel.
Right now you could simply play 6v6 Classic.
The overwhelming majority of games are 4+ DPS - even on 2CP defense
Joke aside:
People who would like that mode are already playing other games that are actually build around this idea.
This change would most certainly be the final nail in OW’s coffin.
I wouldn’t mind having a separate 6v6 DPS only mode though.
If they bring back 2/2/2 Role Q, they could give DPS players the option to skip queue by playing every 2nd match in a 6v6 DPS only mode.
It was a problem in OWL due to a downturn in ticket sales as audience got bored with GOATS vs GOATS matches over and over
However, in the game proper, very few folks even knew GOATS existed, and of those, only a very few had the coordination and/or communication skills to pull it off
Everyone knew what GOATs was and the higher ranks were filled with GOATs comps.
Even then, I’m not even talking about GOATs in reference to the past, I’m talking about now if you were to make the game OQ. Everyone definitely knows what GOATs is now, and with Queen and Mauga providing team sustain, GOATs would be stronger.
Also you have said this before, all of this, word for word. Did you just copy and paste it all or is this just convenience?
I don’t read strategy guides or watch tournaments and I know what GOATs was since it was picked up on, and that’s when I was in gold or plat and hadn’t been playing the game for months at that point.
Oh my, 1% of the playerbase doesn’t know what GOATs is? That must mean it’s uncommon knowledge.
