$17M in OWL player salaries!?

I can’t believe this needs to be said but you do realize that OWL and Team 4 are two different entities right? It’s also the orgs that pay their players, coaches etc. This is a 0 IQ take if I have ever seen one.

People vote with their dollars and their time, and apparently they’re voting in such a way that Blizzard doesn’t have to change.

It’s the same with politics, and why we have such god-awful leaders. It’s ultimately the citizens’ fault.

That is because none of these things are actually issues.

The players “complaining” tend to be tilted and bitter about something else and just deflecting.

You should see league of legends pro salary, And that game has a legit garbage match maker.

This is why when all you guys say OW and OWL league is failing I just laugh. Y’all have no idea how much money is generated and all of you that want to pay for battle passes? Lmao because you think throwing more money at something making billions will make more content? Surrre

Rather that imaginary version than starve

This only works if people buy the game, play the game, and watch the game. It’s our fault not blizzards

If you want to play OVerwatch you do have to play with people who takes the game far too seriously thanks to esports. The general attitude of the whole community is affected by it.

The game industry is just a tip of the iceberg. Can you say the same for bottle-necked media outlets, utility providers, rental properties? Everyone’s not as educated, and don’t know their options. To take advantage of others ignorance, is not a triumph of the “American Dream”, but a sign of unchecked capitalism. Whether it be Activision or bp, accountability and awareness are key.

cool post but blizz doesn’t pay OWL salaries so moot point

The masses don’t starve. If they’d starve they wouldn’t play the game. Yet Overwatch is still one of the most played games out there.

If they starve they starve themselves. Which is completely their problem. I for one am not starving. Also it’s kind of weird to equate anything video-game related with people dying. Just saying.

To stay inside of your weird metaphor: You’re basically complaining that the bread in the bakery you go to is disgusting and that you can’t eat it. Yet you keep buying it instead of going to another bakery.

The entitlement is strong…

  1. OWL makes money, OW standalone does not
  2. Blizzard doesn’t pay them
  3. Just because you don’t watch it, doesn’t mean others don’t watch it
  4. How is the viewership waning?
  5. How is it different to other sports? (whether you define it as a sport or not, is irrelevant)

All in all, what the hell difference does it make how much money these people make to you?

It will be like this until OW2.

You may not like it OW being under maintained but that’s the reality. OWL is really the only thing keeping it alive.

I never claimed they were. I’m illustrating how skewed and dissociated the league is from the rest of OW esports (T2, T3), and normal playerbase (ladder). You have more money circulating the league then evidence of basic OW upkeep maintenance).

I had thought about that (as is the norm in broad socio-economic statements). I was going to take conservative salary figure between base and mean, like $70k. But it doesn’t affect the order of magnitude estimate. Salaries are in the multi-millions, while normal kids can’t even get into a smurf-free, cheating-free, rigging-free, properly hosted match.

If anything I’m looking out for the masses. “The players” class i.e. the true 99% are getting short-changed on this kind of league deal. They’re seeing almost no benefits to the actual game as a result of the league. In fact, the league has been extremely detrimental to normal player base.

Doesn’t Blizz take a % cut from OWL operations as royalty/use of ip? How much of that is trickling into the game for it’s actual normal players.

I think it does. Live ladder is a total cesspool and it needs a cash injection (from somewhere, anywhere) to clean things up. There is barely a T2 and T3 anymore, so the esport isn’t organic. The whole model is only sustainable on product placement, and I suspect it’s a bubble about to burst when the sponsors realize nothing is trickling back into the basegame except 1000s of free burner accounts.

That cash in circulation isn’t part of Blizzard, so

Yes you did claim Blizzard is paying the players, by making the claims I quoted above.

However, I do agree with this:

Blizzard does need to invest in the T2 and T3 scenes to ensure the survival of OWL. However, I do see a lot of promotion for the OWC (i.e. T2) lately, and a lot of games are being played at that level.

I would like to see a lower tier with more accessibility, kind of like the MiLB. the Minor League Baseball is the T2 for MLB. Except, the MiLB is broken down into sub-leagues. AAA, AA, High A, and Low A are the leagues the MiLB operates. Now the players in the MiLB don’t have a union, so they get paid significantly less than even the cheapest MLB player. But at least anyone aspiring to go pro in baseball can see the structure.

However, I think its too early to see a significant and complex OW T2/3 system in place.

It’s just weird to me that you’re upset about the money flowing through OWL, $17 million, when Bobby Kotick by himself can make several times that in a year off of Activision/Blizzard.

Why is the amount of cash disgusting? I think people spend too much time hating others because “they’re rich! They’ll never be able to spend all that money!”.

Their cash cow WoW is currently suffering huge losses, so I would expect them to panik us some content soon.

There’s people who take the game seriously in every game ever made. There’s few games that are immune from tryhards. There were hyper-competitive people before OWL too.

believe me i’m upset about that, too
wasn’t the bonus like $100M ?

Then what was the ridiculous buy in for starting a team? I believe it was start part of buy in cost covers salaries.

What system would you suggest?
