No, but think it through this way.

“I like shooting things. I can play hero X who lets me run around and shoot things 100% of the time or hero Y who has been changed from shooting people 25% of the time to shooting people 50% of the time. Which should I choose?”

What would this theoretical player choose? Probably hero X. Meanwhile you probably pissed off the people who liked hero Y for their barrier.

Usually when this happens, the dps aren’t getting space made for them or getting heals when they need it.

When tanks are complaining about medals/kills theyre usually playing too aggro and dying before the team can even move in. Or maybe your healers are just neglecting them. Idk

  1. Making a bigger number (DPS players) more efficient is a lot more significant than losing efficiency on a small number (Tank players).
  2. Fundamental changes to the Tank Class is pretty much a non-negotiable reality that needs to happen.
  3. Because if they don’t do that, then Queue Times continue to be bad or get worse, and Overwatch 2 fails, and the entire franchise fails.

It’s much simpler to avoid Competitive during non peak hours as well. You will find more kids and stressed out night shifters than anyone else. Best to stick to what a normal schedule would be for someone working 40 hrs a day.

So you want to bring back double shield: you want stronger shields and more firepower for the heroes with shields.

Double shield was the most dissatisfying era this game has had. Shooting shields all day is the worst FPS experience you can possibly have - both from a player experience and especially from a spectator experience:

  • fake walls in your face all game
  • players don’t use or learn cover correctly because shields are there all game
  • Moira/Doom every game because no one else can hit the players behind the shields
  • every team fight feels like the same scenario, no matter where it is on the map
  • pairs well with abilities like Mei’s wall, Batiste’s Immortality Field, etc., because why not just keep piling on the nonsense at that point

They nerfed this junk for a reason; we don’t want it back.

To be fair it isn’t really a problem exclusive to Tanks. Healers can’t really do anything if their teammates don’t get picks either, and DPS are worthless if the other two roles don’t make a proper effort to keep them alive.

If anything it’s just a strike against it being a team-dependent game.

You’d think people would be smart enough to realize that if discord ignores barriers, and Sigma and Orisa are more vulnerable at close range.

That all you need to do is slap a discord on one of those tanks, and speedboost/Dive past the barriers, and shoot them in the face.

Really doesn’t matter how strong the barriers are, if you can just walk straight past them.

You don’t get it. Making tanks appeal to DPS players probably won’t get them to swap to Tank because they already found their flavor of fun that they enjoy. However it is a good way to get people who already liked tanking to leave and never look back.

You know what happened when they reworked Mercy? A whole lot of her mains just left the game. They didn’t want to try to have fun on a different hero with a different flavor of fun… they just left.

Honestly I think that was the thing that started Overwatch in its downward spiral. Before that, pretty much nobody complained about Comps with too much DPS or solo tanking. Why? Because Mercy was freaking everywhere and she worked well with Tanks and DPS and was actually capable of solo healing… like you’d expect from a hero who has nearly zero offensive presence. Mercy got reworked and suddenly everyone’s complaining that there aren’t enough healers in the game, or solo tanking is the worst, or 5+ DPS is the worst, or we need 2-2-2. All because they decided to gut the fun factor of the one hero who’s presence and ridiculously high popularity was keeping this game fun for everyone else too.

They’ve been making fundamental changes to the tank class ever since Goats started. It hasn’t helped. In fact that’s why we are in the position we are in today.

I played fill. My last active season was prior to most of the Goats nerfs and despite the pros running 3-0-3 every game, I ended up roughly splitting my time 3 ways between Reinhardt, DVa, and Brigitte, because even then tanking was the least popular role. You know what made me give up on the tank class completely and move to primarily auto locking stuff in QP so I wouldn’t feel like I needed to fill as Tank? The Anti Goats nerf of weaker armor and DVa’s Defense Matrix.

I won’t be sad at all if that happens. Overwatch was an absolute goldmine of a game. But through stubborness and incompetence, they’ve made it terrible. If Overwatch does die then Blizzard made their bed… they get to lie in it.

It’s more like you got 2 options:

  1. Make barrier tanks more appealing to a wider audience. Ideally by buffing the most undeniable aspect that makes a hero fun. Shooting stuff.
  2. One Tank per team, and buff them a lot.

honestly the game revolves around the tanks. if tanks do good then they can protect the supports who heal them. if supports are doing good it enables the dps to be protected and healed. however if the tank is doing good and the supports are not. dps don’t do much. and if the supports and tanks do good and the dps don’t they don’t do good. also dps in lower elos just do there own thing and don’t care about the tanks I have seen

For Diamond and above, I’d agree to that.

But Diamond and above is less than 7% of the playerbase.

They said, my short term plan is to just onetrick Roadhog to high Plat. Occasionally swapping to Rein when the DPS seem like they know what they are doing.

Too many low elo kids buying higher accounts. That’s the problem.

When they prevent account selling, we will see these sorts of things improve.

  1. Remove 2-2-2 lock and add a series of 60-90s CD deployable gadgets. That includes things like 300 mini Orisa shields. 3 seconds of 200 HP worth of adaptive shielding. A deployable ~300 hp Training Dummy that can contest. A like… landmine type thing that explodes after 1 second that deals 50 damage and a 1s stun. Another landmine type thing that does a small AoE 80 HP heal and cleanse 1s after you drop it. A thing that heals 100% of your characters Max HP over 5s but the heal stops if you take damage. A thing that pushes your character backwards around ~5m. Let your imagination run wild.

Each player can have any one gadget equipped on any hero.

Why this? Well the answer is simple. These gadgets will hopefully make it so playing a tank or healer is still fun and balanced… but not as required as it is currently. Shafting people out of the play style they like is wrong but so is forcing people into a particular play style.

A very basic tenant of Game Design is to make the most effective way to play also the most fun way to play. That’s why people didn’t like Goats. Most of the player base doesn’t like tanking. That’s fine. But that doesn’t mean you should delete the fun parts of tanking for those that do. What you need to do instead is add systems and mechanics that make it possible for players to efficiently play the way that is fun for them.

So your answer is, changing barrier tank firepower 18% is too much change.

So completely redefining the gameplay balance and removing the system they’ve been working on for months, returning people to squabbling for role choices and 1-4-1 comps. Is the better solution?

if you are doing roadhog and have a rein I suggest zarya as she has some of the highest dps at max energy and a game changing ult. as well as a life saving shield for her allies. however roadhog has less damage but a higher pick potential so if you rather need that then go hog but I do suggest trying and learning zarya

Mostly mention Roadhog because I’m not that good at Zarya, and Zarya isn’t that great if your team is uncoordinated anyways.

I also have 290 hours on Roadhog, mostly from season 1-4, and exceptional hook accuracy. (The secret is left click = hook)

No. I’m saying 18% more fire power is the wrong change. It won’t help anything and if there are compensation nerfs to go with it, it will make things worse.

If done right, gadgets could make 1-4-1 comps or even more drastic comps not suck to play in. Seriously… Give Mei that Adaptive Shield gadget and she’s basically a tank when she uses it. Give Soldier that mini Orisa shield and he cares a lot less whether he has a shield tank or not. Give DVa that 100% self heal and she’s a lot less dependent on having a healer dedicated to keeping her cardboard mech in one piece. Give everyone on your team that deployable bot that can contest for you… suddenly you might not even need a tank on the team at all to stall objectives for you.

Would it be difficult to implement? Yes, of course it will. But the way I see it… Overwatch is so far gone that only drastic changes that return what made Overwatch fun in the first place have a prayer of saving it.

This!

I have not solo queued for comp in a very long time. I work my friends list and we fill with LFG if needed.

Does that mean I win a lot more? Not really - the gains have been marginal. But I do enjoy comp a lot more. Solo queue competitive is to random to be worth my time.

Quick play and arcade I will solo, just never comp anymore.

And the solution? Let’s nerf Rein too, so ALL tanks are terrible…
