Tanking 102 - Using and Abusing Vision

Good advice for everyone

good advice, but, a couple days ago i just played an unranked game with a diamond 1 and master, i was johana, and they just ranted me because i was hidding in a bush (I did not do it with the mentality or the intention that you describe in your post) However, those who keep pressing bot ranted me about doing something useful than stand afk in bushes, when I just wanted to be hidden and look around …

Happend to me yesterday as Ana.
I wasn’t paying attention and checked somewhere else on the map, not realizing I was heading in face first into a bush with a diablo and some DPS waiting for me haha.
Normally I always check bushes with Ana’s Q, very safe thing to do.

Nice effort!

Not to belittle this post or anything but would it be good to have a TL;DR?

Can you give a short summary?

Look at your mini-map frequently!

But more seriously, if you only read the first paragraph in each section, you will get the gist of it.

Yeah, this is a necroing stuff :stuck_out_tongue:

I am curious at how often you look at the mini map? Also, when facing the other team, when I look at the mini map, I often find myself out of position (either being too near the other team or being some kind of back in my team). Do you look also at the mini map in these cases?

Try to do it as much as possible. Don’t spend like 10 seconds staring at it, but do look every few seconds.

Especially when:

  1. you’re laning alone
  2. at least one person is missing from a team fight (they could be moving to a lane or getting a boss/camp)
  3. when you don’t see them on your screen.
  4. during objectives/fights so that you don’t lose a keep/fort due to negligence.
  5. when you’re taking a camp. (if they aren’t on the map they might be looking to steal/ambush)
  6. when deciding what path to take to move somewhere on the map.

I will also add that its important to ping the map as well. Even if you’re wrong about the enemy position, its important to make sure your team is prepared for them to pop out of anywhere. You don’t need 20 pings either. Just one or two. Pinging is a useful tool, but it can be abused/annoying.

I am frequently glancing over at the mini-map, but as noted, I usually look quickly unless I am doing something like anchoring, in which case I am monitoring who I can and can’t see constantly. In a team fight, if there aren’t 4 or 5 people already engaged, I will keep an eye on the mini-map to see if someone pops up in a rotation so I can warn my off-laner, or be ready for a flank attack on my back line.

One trick that can help you learn to look at the map regularly is to set a tool like a metronome up that will beep or tick every 5-10 seconds. When it ticks, sneak a peek. You will learn how to read the information quickly, and get in the habit of looking frequently.

This is so concise I love it.
I don’t think tanking is in my blood honestly.
I hope I’m never forced to take the role but these pointers at least help.

Visual information is an useful resource just as much as hero movement speed or their collision sizes, where it might be easier to block off a retreating hero if your character is fat enough.

Good advice for all novice moba players would be to observe some RTS titles to get a better understanding of what current top priority might be for your enemy at any point in time and what you can do about it, even if it means trading your units at a surplus or distracting them to interrupt their thinking process.

Just count enemys and see which lane they are in and who are missing. You dont have to do an extended search.

Everyone can tank. You just need to find the right one for you and just repeat the same combo

Idk how you’re stuck (?) in plat when your theoretical knowledge is like a mid-high level master. Looking at the minimal? Caring about your team?

Looks like you went from gold to plat so you’re not stuck

I am not always consistent about putting theory into practice, and my micro is bad. I simply do not have the mechanical skills to play at a Masters level.

I blame old age and incompetence.

I’m victim of this too. Sometimes I just start having too much fun that I forget its a ranked and I’m supposed to be serious.

But I don’t think my knowledge is Master level, and my skill is probably low platinum at absolute best when the stars align. No excuse except that I’m just not as good as I think I am lol

Isn’t that a mood. I think it’s called something academically, I wish I could remember. Something about, how your behaviour drastically changes when you’re in control playing vs how your theoretical decision-making would be when you’re simply an observer. And that the more you play a game, the less of a gap there is between these two states of mind.
