I don’t remember it being called siege either, but I do remember the icon for Specialist was a broken tower (joined in beta).
I think they actually changed it to an asterisk-like thing because people were assuming any Specialist should be a siege monster (picutre a TLV player getting flamed because they didn’t out-siege the enemy Azmo).
Honestly, I’d be happy if “specialist” went from being a siege type role to being changed in name to something indicating characters who gain in power via farming minions (like Az and Naz), basically something to indicate they’re well suited to being solo lane characters due to both being able to clear well and gaining power from being the sole hero to do that.
The specialize. =P
The specialist role was classically associated with siege potential, but Blizzard has been reworking many specialists to fall into other roles.
The Specialist role was always a weird tag.
At the start it was mostly Heroes who are the best at pushing and soaking.
But even at the begining that wasn’t always the case. Assassins and other roles could do that too and Aba and TLV was always bit weak at pushing but strong at soaking but since everyone can soak…
Then came Medivh, who is a Support but not support enough to put him next to and against the other Supports, so they put him into the Specilaist role since that was always the “these guys are weird” role.
But since ppl had this Specialist = Siege Monster mentality (despite it wasn’t true), they changed the icon of this role from a tower to that star-thingy we have now.
So Specialists are the truly unique Heroes and Assassins, Supports and Warriors, who can’t entirely fill their roles. They are like “half-breeds”.
The claim by many that it “doesn’t do anything” and is just “assassins/support” is patently false. Most specialists were siege heroes as far as a general focus. Also, many even when they had healing capacities and so on had traits that dramatically altered gameplay and enabled zoning out of enemy heroes, like Gazlowe’s turrets, Sylvanas Black Arrows and so on. Making them merely Assassins and so on was a mistake on their (Blizzards) part.
What was the purpose of this necro?
It serves butter.
Specialist tag was never mentioned to be a weird role.
It was a pure pvE role.
People that don’t know alpha or beta think it’s a weird role.
Necromancer.
