Serious discussion: Do people only play QM because of short queue times and would way prefer draft if it had the same queue times?

I prefer QM because I can select whatever hero I feel like playing and that’ll be the end of that decision. Unranked, by contrast, is still infested with players who’ll immediately call GG before the match even loads because someone on their team picked a hero they don’t like or don’t agree with, regardless of whether that hero was picked early in the draft so the team has a chance to build around it, or if the hero was last picked. It’s that simple.

I don’t care about queue times. That’s why I own a Switch, I can sit there messing with my Switch or watching anime or whatever while waiting for queue to pop, even if that queue takes 10+ minutes. What I do care about is so many members of this community taking unranked draft every bit as seriously as a hero league match. Nothing more, nothing less.

I mostly only play so that I can play the hero I want to play.

Ermmmmm… Um… So like, unless you have a solid grasp on a decent amount if the game… I don’t want you banning for my team? It sounds harsh I know, but if you play for a month and look back at yourself now you’ll understand.

Besides, its rather required you not be a one trick pony pretty much in any game mode. At least know a few different builds and play them well for your only hero, at least.

Well, to play UD/TL like you play QM defeats the purpose of having 2 separate game modes, right? Moreso even for ranked…

I prefer QM stay in the game, so players who solely play QM for a variety of reasons are kept far as possible from my games.

Ok sure, I get that you wanna play the game how/what hero you specifically wanna play at all times… But that only detracts from your team’s chance of winning when the game is based around teamwork… The team that obv doesn’t have teamwork is at a huge disadvantage…

Which brings us to… Do you play to win or just do what you want? There’s obvious pros to one and cons to the other…

I’d play draft if they got rid of map rotations.

Only reason I play qm.

You aren’t the only one. There are many of us(including me).

perhaps for expediency, but the quality of games in TL is generally much higher IMO. I personally enjoy the game of the draft, and the results of drafting are generally that teams are better suited towards themselves and each other and the map. To some degree it standardizes the gameplay which can be a good and a bad thing, but the fact that you’re not going to be playing Tank Illidan instead of flex illidan means a lot to me. I like to have a tank and support and I like drafting.

The randomness of QM is undeniably a good training opportunity in some ways however. Not in all ways but in some

It would be more likely. But even without bans and free pick order, you wouldn’t be able to your desired hero 100% of the time. Either because someone picks it first or because of the expection of draft to have at least 1 tank and support. And if you want to play DPS, but the first three spots are already filled Asassins and Specialists, then you’re pretty much out of luck.

For the AI, propably not. Not because of the AI itself, but because you barely reach Lvl 20 in AI matches. And those you do, the game is already almost over.

I play QM because it’s the only place that I can play Abathur without people cursing at me.

You know I’ve been wanting to say it, but: Team Builder.

Team Builder worked phenomenally for League of Legends. I see no reason why they can’t just add it for HotS. Hell, I’d scrap QM for a Team Builder mode.

I play QM exclusively because i want to pick the hero i’m going to play. I wouldn’t know where to start with the picks and the counter picks and i don’t want to start learning that with this ‘toxic’ community.

I play QM so I can play what I want without being forced to play a role/hero I don’t want to play.

As far as I’m concerned, I’m doing draft players a favor by not playing that mode because if they got rid of QM, I’d just play whatever I wanted in draft and then my teammates would never be happy.

I play abathur in draft all the time. Show the pick early and let your team draft around it. I currently have a 75% win rate on him on my Asia account.

People will only be upset if you suck at him or draft him when it makes zero sense.

It’s not just playing who I want, I LIKE the different comps you wouldn’t see in draft.

I like playing QM the way it is, because it allows a lot more freedom than draft.
I don’t feel forced to play certain heroes to best suit my team and there is no fear of being flamed for your hero picks during draft.

Yes, the team compositions in QM are less in your control, but that surprise factor is also what makes it fun at times.

and watch them not do so!

Just because you’ve happened to play with people who are especially willing to draft around you does not mean that it happens every time.

My experience (outside of filling tank/healer, which I do often) is that people will complain about many heroes.

Yeah, sure. Ignore my nearly 70% winrate as Murky in ranked (this is for example, that is mostly with older vresions of murky).

Sure there are specific point about him, but if that’s who I want to play, and I can deal DPS with it… Oh, look my team is going to not communicate well and fight
I wish we could rely on people to always work with each other. But sadly it doesn’t happen often. Not even a super long HL queue in December where I had the “fun” of playing with top GM players. Absolutely zero communication.

Yes I play QM because of queue times. On Singapore, queue times for Unranked draft are so long I could get halfway into a movie before I get into a Unranked game. In comparison, QM queues are roughly 3 - 10 min long, so of course I’m gonna head into QM. There are other smaller factors, like the fact that I can play any character I want without having to formulate a plan to fight the enemy, and in 5 mans, we can form a teamcomp that can only be countered in a specific way, which isn’t likely to happen in QM. However these smaller factors are more of just the allures of QM, and less of why I don’t play Unranked, as the allures of Unranked are equally as enticing, if not more so.

I mostly play qm because i can choose the hero i want to play and dont have to think about filling a role like you do in ranked.

I play a lot against Ai, because most of my friends still prefer it. For some reason it’s not as stressful even back when we were bad enough to lose quite a bit against Elite. I would love stronger Ai, just to have a challenge in that mode again (especially with how bad the “improved” Ai still is).
It’s not the same though, and Quickmatch definitely has its purpose. I myself prefer unranked, but most of the time we will still play QM, when we play against real people, because it is faster and everyone can play exactly what they want (as mentioned above). We even started to make up our own rule of only waiting 3mins on a game or we switch back to Ai, so you can see how important fast queues are to some people.

If you’re playing a Ranged Assassin, queue times for Unranked Draft are already WAY shorter than Quick Match if you’re solo queuing.

People play Quick Match to play a specific hero, if they actually care about having good balanced matches with said hero, they wouldn’t be playing Quick Match.

The matchmaking rules for Quick Match are pointless. People pick it to play a specific hero, not to have good games. Any player still playing Quick Match in 2019 and expecting good balanced games is deluding themselves. It is NEVER going to happen.
