A joke that sounds like the set up to a clever punchline, but the punchline is actually just kinda stupid instead, or it has a bad pun as a punchline. Usually wordplay is involved. The goal is to get the listener excited to hear a good joke, but then make them cringe from your vile corniness. Bonus points if they make loud screeching noises or punch you afterward.
Normal joke: What do you get when you rotate Tyrande’s hairdo 180 degrees?
Malfurion.
Dad joke: Why does Tracer run faster when she hasn’t had her afternoon tea?
She becomes Racer.

And can you imagine that this is actualy already a proper joke:
- When reading the question its not entirely predictable, but with a slight clue easily doable.
- The punchline is spot on
- The punchline is simple
Thats a key for good (although sometimes simple) jokes.
To get a real dad joke it should fail on flaws like:
- the punchline of the joke should be bad regardless of the question (as in: it doesnt match what actualy happened)
- the punchline should go into too much detail that no one gets it unless they recently have been made aware of the detail.
- the question and answer dont make sense, unless you got some context that is compltely unrelated
For example asking a joke in the WoW forums, that ends up with an overwatch hero is going to cringe people enough.
(but luckily the jokes are most of the time of higher quality. since if everything would have been a dad joke i dont think this thread would survive long)
