Disability issue with battlegrounds anomalies

so this seems like a really basic thing, but when anomalies are active, i lose the game about 25% of the time on turn one, because it isn’t clear to me which anomaly is active. it flashes up for like half a second and then it’s gone, and it’s really easy to miss. it wouldn’t be as much of a problem, but it’s shown between the queue autoaccepting and the game requiring my input to play.

i know most of y’all are going to say “skill issue”, but i have episodic amnesia and new information needs to be directly in front of me for me to know that information. i understand that you can check the anomaly, but i can’t learn to check it, and i think it would be nice if this information was presented in a way that can be observed before the game begins.

and like i get it “skill issue” but that doesn’t seem like a fun skill issue to me, anyone else? :\

i’ve managed to work around a similar issue with tribes, because that information is on screen longer. it’s just a bit depressing to regularly lose on turn one. :\

Its shown at all times on the upper right side

i know where and when it is shown, as stated. i just see no need for it to be hidden information during character select. and i also know that they’ve had this discussion and you can mouse over it to see it during character select. i am asking for it to be prominently visible prior to the game so that users can process that information without needing to remember it.

maybe for me, this post is enough to remember, i don’t know.

but for people like me or people with learning disabilities or just in general people with tempo issues lol, i don’t think losing 25% of the games before they start playing is a good mechanic. i think you underestimate how frustrating it is to realize 1-2 minutes into a 30 minute game that you have lost and there’s nothing you can do but play for 7th. several times per day.

every game is ranked. i don’t mind losing to playing poorly–i do often. i mind entire games pivoting on information that is not being presented to me fairly. i mind grinding out losses for 25% of my playtime.

bro it is visible during character select

bro it is not visible during character select.

my dude, it pops up for 0.3 seconds, then goes and hides in a tooltip.

how hard is it for me to be able to read the actual text of what the thing is during character select? to make the text visible? so i can sit and read it. during the time that i’m meant to be paying attention to the game.

i have more than a 50% loss rate on one anomaly from not knowing it’s active. they show it to you before the game for a few seconds. they turned on mouseover for character select. they have it on the sidebar with mouseover. they made it make a noise when you buy a minion.

obviously they know it’s a problem and haven’t been able to address it if i still have a 50% loss rate on the anomaly as a casual player. things happen, i get messages, i have to turn my head away from the monitor to deal with work, i forget, yeah?

just put. it on. the screen. for character. select. with the full. text. of what. is happening.

there is absolutely no reason for my win rate to drop 25% when anomalies show up due to losing on turn 1.

like i get it, “play better, pay more attention” I LOSE ON TURN ONE. TURN ONE. IN THE FIRST MINUTE OF A 30-60 MINUTE GAME.

again, i get it, “play better”. don’t lose in the first minute of the game and have to grind it out. “learn what the icons mean and remember when you check them” i’m sorry, i literally cannot.

i’m just letting the devs know it isn’t fun.

edit btw: literally lost again before posting this. on turn one. of a 30 minute game. jsyk.

edit edit: put it on the char select screen, ping me when i have unspent gold, whatever. i shouldn’t have to download an addon for your game to be playable. i should 100% lose to misplays. i shouldn’t lose to turn 1 misplays. end of. poor game design and y’all know it, end of.

edit edit edit: anomalies are a core mechanic that change the trajectory of the game and y’all are treating them like an “add on” or an “afterthought”. again, the only way to play battlegrounds is ranked. so either i shut off everything i’m doing to play y’all’s casual afk card game or i eat losses in the first minute. stop trying to monetize my rage.

It is.

You can’t see where my cursor is, but it’s at the lil circle on the right of “Choose a Hero”

did you ever try reading the text that pops up when you touch (or hover on pc) the anomaly icon?

so the text of the anomaly is fully visible during the entire period of character select, or it flashes on the screen and you have to mouseover to read it?

because these are two completely different things.

again, core game mechanics cannot be presented as an afterthought.

losing turn 1 is bad game design. imagine if they put a tier 1 minion in the pool and if you bought it there was no way to possibly win the game, it would just be automatic 7th after a dozen turns. would that be good game design?

this is a children’s card game. if there’s something that loses me the game turn one, put it front and center and in bold.

Its shown at all time’s, even during hero select, its in the top right corner

Bro if you cant handle the fact that the anomaly’s full text is always made available via hovering with your mouse (or long press on mobile device) over the anomaly symbol itself, exactly like how the timewarped symbol’s full text is made available, then maybe gaming just isnt for you in general?

The biggest reason the full text cannot be made as part of the hero selection screen is multiple.
A: The game is made available in many languages. So the UI has to be made uniform to function efficiently across them all. So text generally isnt involved with that in mind.
B: Real estate on screen is always at a premium. even tho you or I may be on a desktop with a monitor up to 50 inches wide, many are not. I myself have played many a BGs on my simple 4.5 inch by 2.25 inch screen. Text doesnt stand a chance of being shown anywhere unless it is in a tooltip via long press.
C: The game has long held a standard of “here’s a picture of a thing, hover or long press this to learn more” such as any and all minions and spells etc in the tavern. hero powers. and yes, anomalies.

they do minion types just fine in all languages. the text is already available and constrained to a box in all languages, it’s already been translated.

space is at a premium, yeah. it should only be used for things like core game mechanics that change every single game. i checked, and they’re occupying about 40% of the screen for character select on mobile. they are making poor use of their real estate.

things like hero powers, minions, spells, they do the same thing all of the time, you have plenty of time to sit and look at them, that reinforces learning about them. they’re a part of the game that you interact with for the entire game. if you don’t know what a minion or spell does, there are other paths to winning the game.

what we’re talking about with anomalies isn’t an item in the game it’s a game mode.

it completely changes, starting with your first rushed play, how the game is played.

it isn’t like a minion where not knowing what it does loses you fractional win %. it is often win/loss to understand what it does and adjust your gameplay.

there is no excuse for something like that not to be prominently displayed on character select at the beginning of the game.

hero powers, minions, and spells also happen on the actual game screen instead of there being a context switch from select to “okay game screen go you have 20 seconds to make a decision” (changing the turn 1 and 2 timers slower would not fix this btw).

it’s weird that you’re trying to excuse bad game design when anomalies were clearly added very late in development and get turned on and off so were not properly designed for and kinda hacked in visually. the game interface was not designed for anomalies, i mean hell, it wasn’t even designed for battlegrounds.

gaming is for everyone. i learned all of the other stuff before i lost the ability to learn. so maybe you don’t know what it’s like to not be able to learn. my apm is terrible bc i still have to double check what a lot of minions do, but when i’m interacting with them 1000 times a day it starts to stick. stuff like being upfront and prominent with things that change instead of hiding them really helps people like this.

there is zero required interactivity with anomaly icons. it is not an active part of the game to interact with them at any time. the text is flashed on the screen for a second and if you blink you miss it, never shown again. buried away. and if you miss it, you lose the game turn 1 and have to play out a 30 minute loss.

just leave the mouse over the anomaly icon during battles

You get to mouse over it for as long as you want n read it.

Stop doubling down n making excuses.

y’all are super feisty. i obviously don’t expect blizzard to make changes, but it doesn’t even stay on the screen long enough to read it, there’s no built in list of them to look at and think about how to play when they come up, this is like basic entry level stuff lol

”just try harder to uncover hidden information or eat your turn 1 loss”, at least when they had turn one losses in hearthstone proper the games were over in 5 minutes.

You complained about a thing you dislike in BGs. Fair, and reasonable stance to have.

But when there is a solution to the thing you dislike in BGs negating the actual issue you are suggesting comes about due to the thing you dislike is brought forth, you double down and you also dislike the solution as well.

That is called being a choosey beggar. and no one likes a choosey beggar. no one. Dont allow yourself to become one.

also,

i am very relatable to that sentiment as I have a very rough time forming memories. SO I do actually have a sense of such struggles. however I dont allow my crappy brain chemistry to dictate my ability to adapt. Just because one cannot read the blink and you’ll miss it full text anomaly at the start of the hero selection at start of match, doesnt mean I am doomed to a 30 min guaranteed loss because I missed it. I picked up on the trick of hovering my mouse over the anomaly so i can get a 2nd, longer chance at reading the full text of the anomaly. Letting me decide if i wish to remain in the match or not, and which hero to pick should I decide to stay, and so on.

You are refusing to adapt when all the options you seek are laid out before you. Its as if you refuse to use a keyboard because it requires you to hold down shift if you wish to have capital letters. You stance would suggest the capital letters ought to be their own keys in addition to the lower case. Always visible and readily seen without anything from the user needing to be done to access them.

Thats ridiculous. as is your stance on the anomaly full text description being always up and visible when all you have to do is simply hover over the icon during hero selection. a metaphorical shift key, if you will.

this really how you treat people around here, isn’t it? i’ll just go back to designing things for people with disabilities… do try to be kind when people who show up at your doorstep and ask if please maybe something minor could be improved for everyone.

it just seemed to me that maybe not autolosing for new or challenged players could bring some sunshine into someone’s life ^-’^ we’ve spent more time arguing over it than it would take to fix, and it isn’t a pleasant experience for anyone involved, so i apologize.

Fun fact, you are the only person here with this issue, no one else playing this game is having problems with this

And 1 person is not enough

It’s not hidden info. You just keep doublin down on being incorrect. :sob:

btw i was literally staring at the screen when the anomaly popped up and i had no idea what the anomaly was when the game started. just now, jsyk.

thanks to this thread, i checked it before i lost. but jsyk.

it’s bad game design.

(edit: also, there are four people here. multibillion dollar company. four people.)

For the record Blizzard no longer exists as a company. They are now just a publisher under Microsoft games. So you need to get MS to care and well they didn’t buy Blizzard for HS or WoW so getting them to spend more money is nearly impossible in those areas.
