Advice on which packs to grab

Hey there,

So I played HS a tiny bit when it launched (just enough to get the WoW mount), for a tiny bit when Naxx first came out, and just repicked it back up about a week ago. I’ve actually been enjoying the crap out of it this time around, so I bought the classic starter’s pack thing and unlocked all my basic cards, etc.

I’ve been enjoying “progressing” through the PvE stuff the most, so most of the cards I’ve crafted have been for fights I’ve been sort of stuck on. I don’t dust many cards because I love trying out new ideas. I’ve gotten halfway through Naxx so far (I used some of my gold to unlock the first 2 wings) and just have LK left for Frozen Throne. I haven’t tried anything newer yet, but am looking forward to it.

I’ve been playing some ranked too, of course, but I’m not very good yet and haven’t even climbed a rank technically. I’ve mostly been playing in Wild, oddly, because I find I learn more from seeing a wider range of decks (at my rank, anyway). I also figure WIld works best for me since I’m mostly focused on PvE.

My question comes in here-- So far I’ve been using my gold on classic packs, but last night I opened a pack and got mostly duplicates. I then realized that I’ve gotten my first legendary from classic already (Maly), so maybe it makes more sense to start buying packs from a different expac?

The decks I’ve enjoyed the most and/or I’d like to create include:

  • Paladin - My DK legendary is Uther, so I built a basic murloc deck with him + a few weapons and it does okay-- I’d like to get some of the better murlocs.
  • Warrior - I have a half-assed pirate deck that seems to do okay, and is fun.
  • Druid - I have no good druid cards, but I still like the class. I really want to make a Jade deck, but have none of the cards for it.
  • Priest - I have a fairly basic health increase/creature deck that serves me well a lot of the time, but I don’t enjoy it as much as I do the other classes.

I’d also like to get into Warlock more, and perhaps Hunter. I’d like to create a deck around Malygos, too, but… I have no idea what class.

Playstyle-wise, I tend to prefer aggro over control, and I tend to refrain from going full cookie cutter just because I like being flexible in general. I often look at other decks and create modified versions of them. I’ll never be very competitive, and I’m okay with that.

Given all that, is there a certain expac that might serve me best for getting packs from? I also know the latest expac is out today so that throws another wrench in the loop, lol. Maybe it’s best for me to buy packs from that and see what gets shook up?

Thanks!

Once the new release is out for a few weeks you’ll be able to have a much more accurate picture of which packs are good for the decks you are interested in.

Did you know that you are guaranteed a legendary in the first 10 packs of each expansion? If you are conserving gold ( who isn’t) - you would open 1 pack at a time until you open your legendary then move on to a different expansion.

You’re guaranteed a legendary from the first 10 packs of any expansion that you open, so I would open at least 10 of each expansion with your gold as you play the game. It’s a good way to build up dust. Other than that, RoS is probably going to be strong compared to the other expansions, but it’s always best to have a base of classic cards. After you open your 10 each I would just keep opening classic packs until you feel like you have a good percentage of the commons and rares, then start opening other stuff. If you feel like spending money, remember that you can save almost 20% by using amazon coins. I would buy a preorder for RoS just because there aren’t too many times when you can get 50 packs for $50 with an added legendary, that’s 3 guaranteed legendaries with an average of 4.

Yeah, I know about the 10-pack legendary thing, that’s why I was like hmmmmm last night, hah. I’m mainly wondering if one expac in particular would serve my goals better than another, but probably not at this point given how many good cards are out there that I don’t have.

The pre-order is tempting, but man, that’s a big chunk of cash.

Good question, I don’t have the knowledge to help you. Paladin and Warrior are not my favourites. Druid was my best deck before the nerf hammer hit it in December. I don’t see ROS being great for Druid, but I’ll still try.

If you don’t get much of a reply because of all the attention on ROS, post again later or ask the question in the multi-player discussion – it’ll get more visibility.

I don’t have a large collection myself. A reason to get the first in 10 pack legendary is that, imo, having a good legendary to build a good deck around in one of your not-favourite classes would give you something else to play while you are tinkering with your main decks. Of course, you never know what legendary you are going to pull, and you may just dust it instead (not that I have been able to bring myself to do that yet).

I wasn’t saying buy the preorder, just that IF you WERE going to spend money, now is the time to do it. The two strongest expansions in standard after rotation are gonna be RoS and Boomsday, I’d prioritize classic cards first, then RoS, then Boomsday probably if I didn’t have many cards. WW was pretty lackluster other than genn/baku and rastakhan has its cards but 90% of them are pretty trash for ladder type play.

i would stop buying classic packs asap

While this takes patiece, the results will be better for you in the long run

there are so many free classic packs to get if you play for some months that its getting to the poit of diminishing returs pretty fast

Its better to buy up to 10 packs from every expansio to get the grated legedary

That all makes sense. Thanks for the advice!

On Warrior… it might be possible to build some kid of tempodeck, or budget version of rush Warrior and there is Wild Pirate Warrior but i general Warrior tends to be very very expesive , cause its a lot of epics…

Dang, opened my first and only pack of Shadows cards so far, got Kalecgos. I guess I can add control mage to my list LOL.
