Possible workaround: Game not starting after major update

tl;dr: if the game doesn’t open on PC after a major update and you’re on WLAN, try Scan & Repair on a wired connection.

Dear all,
I’ve been playing for a year and a half. For about 3 major updates I was unable to play for a few weeks on PC after installing them. The issue has been well documented on Reddit and here in the forums without any solutions that worked for me. From my research it hasn’t affected the broad player base. I want to offer a possible solution for those affected by it.

Symptom: after downloading a major update the game won’t start (Battle.net launcher says “Launching”, then “Playing” but no game window opens). Windows 11 Event Viewer (Windows Logs → Application) shows errors such as this:

Fault bucket 1510480481562316615, type 5

P10:

You tried a clean install of the game, cleaning Battle.net cache, tried deleting just the LocalData folder, updated all your drivers and tried Scan & Repair in Battle.net (which downloads the entire game again → 80GB, yay), starting the game as administrator, setting it to windowed mode (-w), tried forcing DirectX11 (-dx11) - to no avail. The game still won’t start.

Suspected issue: Corrupted files during download (anywhere in that 80GB).

I’m running my PC on a WLAN stick, which isn’t ideal in terms of performance and stability but works well enough not to do anything about it. Grasping for straws I decided today to hook the PC up to my router through a ethernet cable (wife’s on vacation, cable is running through the house) and Scan & Repair on a wired connection.

The game works now. I hope this helps someone in their desperate attempt to get back into the game on PC.
