Why even have a skill tree?

You are really bad at video games if you think those are the options lol.

My lightning build focused on generating Crackling Energy uses completely different skills than my lightning build focused on close range damage.

No wonder you’re complaining about lack of builds. You’re just dumb and can’t put together a build without a streamer telling you to. You have no creativity or imagination and limited intellect.

Please, tell everyone your “build” and what skills you slotted into the 6 skill slots.

Let me guess 4 of them: Spark, Chain Lightning, Lightning Spear, Teleport

This is not a “build”. It is predefined. Only low IQ players think this is a “build” because they do not have the intellect to see how it is obviously predefined.

Yeah the OP is on a legacy Nintendo A B controller. I’ve been smashing at least 5 skills (2 off, 3 def) on and off and it becomes even more critical to time cooldowns and such with Ashava.

lol, I play Unholy DK in WoW PvP with over 40 buttons:

QWRTAGZXCVB
shift+QWRTAGZXCB
alt+QWRTAGZXCB
ctrl+QWRTAGZXCB

lol @ “5 skills”

2 points to whatever generator (you wont be using if you choose to have ult, or you can have it on your bar without ult but you basically never have to/want to use it)
1 or 2 points to fireball (whatever you feel like you need, this will be your enchantment skill for AoE, you can spec out of ult and max fireball also)
5 points chain lightning, take greater chain lightning SLOT6
1 point teleport SLOT1
1 point ice armor SLOT2
3 points glass cannon
5 points hydra up to invoked hydra/summoned hydra SLOT5
2 points iceblades and take summoned ice blades (you can spend more points here if you spec out of ult SINGLE TARGET) SLOT3
Whatever ult you prefer SLOT4

Thres super strong non-single element sorc build (propably way stronger than any single element build)

I truly hope you enjoy the build and being proven wrong

Let’s break it down. You picked one skill, Chain Lightning, and then just chose 4 cooldown skills based on personal preference. There is nothing special about it. If this is a “build”, then anyone picking Chain Lightning, Ice Blades (which everyone is picking), and any other 4 cooldown skills is a “build”.

Lets learn to count.

I don’t even use slot 4.

TBH, I only need 1 skill for this game. Hydra.

I really think the Paragon Boards are really where the fun comes in tweaking the builds. I actually think they have done a great job of keeping the skill trees straight forward and able to be respec’d easily until you get to level 50 and want to start investing into the paragon boards. Then you are more committed and have to think more.

That way if a casual gamer just wants to work their way up to 50 they can do so without having to stress too much. And then once you get up into the 70s you are laying out your paragon boards to specific tweaks to your builds.

Its just like the crafting isn’t really that heavy duty compared to games like POE. But I don’t think it is meant to be.

i ran frostbolt, frost nova, ice barrier, blizzard, orb, and teleport. two spenders

The difference with D3 is that the skill system made the journey to max level fun. Every level you either had a new skill to try out or a rune(s) that could dramatically change or improve how one of your existing skills works. D4 is locking you into a few skills that will not change for the entire game. A huge step backwards. And be prepared for the disappointment if you manage to find some super good item that isn’t for the specific skills you picked. In D3 if you start finding multiple +fire damage or a legendary you could just swap to those skills/runes for fire damage until you find the next better set of items. In D4, you have to reroll.

So, exactly as I described: Frost Bolt (Basic: Ice) + Orb (Core: Ice) + 4 cooldowns. You chose one skill, Frost Bolt, and the game pigeonholed your next skill allocations to Frozen Orb and Blizzard.

The game might as well have just asked if you want to be Frost, Fire, or Lightning sorceress at character reaction, and simply gave you Frost Bolt, Orb, and Blizzard.

Again, there no need for this a skill tree when the design is so simplistic. The Diablo IV “skill tree” is an illusion of choice, when in reality, there is little to no choice.

so what else do you want. i can pick up meteor instead, i am not running +cold or +blizz skills or anything.

i dont get the complaint. theres always D2 i guess, where you just spam a single spell.

??

you can technically do anything you want… that doesn’t mean it will be as efficient as if you specialized in 1 element or 1 weapon type.

Your cracking energy example is much stronger if you do lighting only and all skills give crackling energy than if you spread it out because frost doesn’t.

Yes, you could run Meteor. You can do anything you want. But you are just basically gimping yourself by not taking Blizzard that does extra damage to Frozen enemies. I guess you can consider it a “choice” to take Meteor with Frost Bolt + Orb, but it is a “choice” to self-sabotage. Any decently intelligent person will always take Blizzard to synergize with Frost Bolt + Orb, exactly as you have done.

Basically, people think they are making a “build” with the skill tree, when in reality, the player’s “choice” is actually obvious and predefined. So, the conclusion is that there is no need for a skill tree: the skill tree is just a convoluted UI to obfuscate the mindless simplicity of the skill system.

exactly my thoughts. With the way it’s built, I’d rather just have it the way it’s in WoW, and just press 1 button to swap between the three elemental specs.

We don’t have enough points in the beta to play around with more than 2-3 skills effectively, considering it takes 5 points + 2 for the imbuements per skill. I think once we have more skill points and can actually max out multiple abilities, things will be quite different.

This would be true if there are 8 to 10 skill slots. But because you are limited to 6 slots, there is no reason to spend points on skills that are not on your bars. Thus, your bar will mostly end up as 2 skills + 4 cooldowns.

Are those 4 extra points really worth it though? All they do is add a little bit of damage. I would hazzard its never worth to put more than 1 in a skill then get the passives.

lol…you just have to use your your imagination. There is a lot of variety. I played and leveled all three characters. My final, the sorceress, I didn’t even use any of her core offensive skills and just put points into the core passives. I was able to wreck everything on veteran and finished main quest line by level 15. It was the complete opposite from my obviously terrible barbarian build. There is a lot of variations that can be tried and used. I’m looking forward to the paragon levels on release date. Try to stay with the game and experiment with it. I had a blast this weekend. I hope you can find that sweet spot and have some fun as well. Good luck, mate.
